How to sign up to Twitter

Below are instructions detailing how to sign up to twitter, how to use twitter and how to tweet. In

order to do this I created a new account called ‘TomSailability’ and took screen shots at each stage

(Please note this account does not actually exist!).

1. Type www.twitter.com into the search bar of your internet browser. The page you see will

look similar to the one below (the background does vary)

2. Go to the Box that says ‘New to Twitter? Sign up’.

Enter your sailability club name in the box labelled ‘Full name’.

Enter your club email address into the box labelled ‘Email’.

Think of a password that is easy to remember and not personal to you (so that you can give it

out to other members of your club).

Then click the Yellow button that labelled ‘Sign up to Twitter’

3. You will now be taken to another login page similar to the one below. Enter the ‘Full Name’

‘Email’ and ‘password’ fields exactly the same as before. On this page there is another field

labelled ‘Username’ I suggest that set your username to be exactly the same as your ‘Full

Name’. This will make it easier for people to find you on twitter. Click the blue ‘sign up’

button at the bottom.

4. Congratulations! You are signed up to twitter, this is what your account will look like. As

shown in the picture below, twitter will suggest some other twitter users to follow. Be sure

to click follow @RYASailability for all the latest goings on from RYA Sailability.

How to use Twitter

Upload a profile picture and background picture to your twitter account. This will help to give people

a more visual impression of what your club is about.

To do this, go to your account home page

Click on the ‘Edit profile’ button, it is located on the right hand side, near the top of the profile.

Click on your user name to navigate

to your account home page.

Click on the Edit profile button to

add a background and profile

picture.

Once you have clicked the edit profile button an image of a camera will appear over the front of your

background and profile picture.

Then click on the image of the camera that appears to upload your photo. Do the same for your

profile picture (located on the left hand side).

You can follow people on twitter by clicking on their profile and then clicking Follow. Once you have

followed someone their tweets will appear on your news feed. Your news feed can be accessed by

clicking on the home button, located top left.

Click the ‘Home’ button to view your news feed

You can search twitter to find and join in conversations that you are interested in. For example

search #sailability to see what is going on in the world of sailability. Also if you want to tweet a

question that is related to sailability so long as you put #sailability in the question then other people

can find it and (hopefully) answer the question. You can also private message other people if you

want to discuss things in further detail away from public view. Private messages are not limited to

140 characters.

Search #sailability to find out what

is going on in the world of sailability.

How to Tweet

Click tweet on the top right of your screen.

This will bring up a box in which you can compose your tweet. You can write a maximum of 140

characters including spaces. If you are unsure what to write, feel free to copy the tweet below to get

you started.

This number shows you how many

of your 140 characters you have

left. If your message exceeds the

140 character limit you will not be

able to tweet it.

Insert a date that is

appropriate to your

club!

The @ sign allows you to tweet a

message to someone, for example

the @ sign here allows you to send

this tweet to RYASailability.

The hashtag allows

other people to find

this tweet and join in

the conversation.
