How to make a ‘Marauders Map’ like the one in Harry Potter using PowerPoint 2010 animation

Set the background• Open a NEW SLIDE from

the HOME tab at the top left of the screen.

• Choose the BLANK layout.

• Right-click anywhere on the slide.

• Select FORMAT BACKGROUND

• In FILL choose PICTURE OR TEXTURE

• Click TEXTURE and choose the first background papyrus.

• Select APPLY TO ALL and ok.

Insert some text

1. Choose TEXT BOX from the INSERT tab at the top left of the screen.

2. CLICK ANYWHERE on the slide and start typing ‘Marauders Map’.

3. Highlight the text and under the HOME tab select the font and change it to ‘Blackadder’ and the size to about 54.

4. Click and drag the textbox to where you want it to be.

Insert a room

1. Choose SHAPES from the INSERT tab at the top left of the screen.

2. CLICK ANYWHERE on the slide and draw a box from the BASIC SHAPES

3. You can change the appearance of the shape by right-clicking on the edge of the shape and select FORMAT SHAPE or moving the tiny yellow diamond.

4. Try it and see if you can make the box have a narrower black or dark brown outline.

Insert more rooms and label them1. Choose Text box from the INSERT

tab at the top left of the screen.

2. CLICK ANYWHERE inside the box you drew and type in a label – for example, ‘Kitchen’

3. When happy with it, click outside the shape and hold down while you drag over the shape and the text box together.

4. Release the button and move pointer back over shape until it turns into a cross with 4 arrows.

5. Right-click and select GROUP

6. You can now highlight this shape in the same way again, hold down ctrl and c, then click ctrl and v to duplicate the shape a couple of times. Drag these to wherever you want them on the slide.

7. Try it and see if you can change the text labels and sizes for some more rooms.

Insert some footprints

1. Choose Picture from the INSERT tab at the top left of the screen.

2. Select an image from the Marauders map folder and double click on it.

1. Use the markers to resize the image and move to wherever you wish on the slide.

2. Repeat with the other footprint and then use the select, ctrl + c and ctrl + v technique to insert another two footprints.

Animate the footprints

1. Select the first footprint by clicking on it.

2. Choose fade from the Animation tab at the top left of the screen.

3. Repeat for each of the footsteps.

4. If you play the slide now, the footprints will appear one by one as you click.

4. Make sure you are on the animation tab.

5. Click on the second footprint and look for the box at the top right that says ‘start’.

6. Change ‘on click’ to ‘after previous’

7. The footprints should now appear automatically after each other.

Cheats way to extend the animation

1. Select the footprints and use ctrl + c followed by ctrl + v to repeat as many times as you wish.

2. You may need to play around with the order of animation in the animation tab, or try making some fade out.

3. What effects can you create?

4. You can even duplicate entire slides and use the transition tab to automatically move from one slide to the next to make your animation even longer without needing to keep clicking.
