About McGann-Mercy High SchoolSummer Academy

Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School is pleased to present its Academy of Enrichment and Sports Programs for the Summer of 2012. All programs strive to create positive attitudes, improve communication, listening and peer relationship skills. Your child will be challenged in a safe environment that is intellectual, physical, creative, and most important, fun!

The Enrichment Programs, which are geared to children, ages 8-12, are structured to hone academic and critical thinking skills, develop self-confidence and foster motivation. This summer, we will also be offering reading/math and English Language Arts (ELA) remedial programs to reinforce these areas of study over the break. These programs are appropriately divided into grades, ranging from grade 3 to grade 10. The Sports Programs are designed for children, grades 3-6, with the goal of developing and improving each player’s technique and skills. This year, there will also be an Advanced Skills Program for young adults, grades 7-12.

FeesEnrichment program fees are $125 per person per session. Each program session runs for 1-week, 3-hours per day (9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.), five days per week. The reading/math program adheres to the same timeframe. The ELA remedial program will run for 1-week, five days per week, 1 ½ hours per day as indicated.

Athletic program fees are $175 per person per session. Each program session runs for 1-week, 4-hours per day (9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.), five days per week. Fees do not include required equipment.

A 10% discount will be applied for registration in multiple sessions. Parents are responsible for transportation and for providing snacks.

SupervisionSupervision for the Enrichment Programs will be available from 8:45 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.

Supervision for the Sports Programs will be available from 8:45 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.

***If you are late picking up your child, a $15 charge will be applied every for every 15 minutes over the scheduled times. Parents must accompany participants to the cafeteria where they will be signed in and out.

Health RequirementsThe McGann-Mercy Summer Academy will provide health services onsite for sick or injured participants. If your child requires more extensive health services, please contact the school at 631-727-5900, ext. 21. All participants must complete, sign and submit all forms prior to the start of the program.

RegistrationIn order to provide your child with robust and pleasurable experience, enrollment in the McGann-Mercy Summer Academy Programs is limited. Going by past experience, these programs fill quickly. To guarantee a spot, registration as soon is possible is highly recommended. Programs with insuf-ficient enrollment will be cancelled.

Multi-Sport ExperienceSessions 1, 2, 3, 4This program will allow participants to take part in a variety of sports and games including: kickball, soccer, Project Adventure, track and field and group games. Most of all, students will learn the fundamentals of sports and good sportsmanship while having fun and learning what it means to be an athlete.

BaseballSessions 1, 2This program will include morning instruction in the infield and outfield positions, hitting and pitching. Instructional games will be key, allowing participants to put their new skills into action! Required Equipment: Glove.

SoccerSessions 1, 2This program will focus on learning basics, improving skill levels and increasing confidence. Players will take part in organized drills, exercises and scrimmages created to challenge players of all levels. Required Equipment: Shin guards and cleats. CheerleadingSessions 1, 2Students will learn a variety of cheer motions, jumps and various routines. They will learn the fundamentals of stunting. This is a fun, energetic and safe camp for those looking for the foundations to beginning and middle level cheering.

BasketballSessions 1, 2, 3, 4This program will reinforce dribbling, passing and shooting skills for all levels of play. Concepts will be taught on individual and team play. TennisSessions 1, 2, 3, 4Emphasis will be placed on introducing the court, the net and scoring as well as controlling the ball and racquet, how to serve, return and volley. More experienced players will work on rally skills, smashes, volleys, lobs, doubles and single strategies. Required Equipment: Tennis racquet.

SoftballSessions 3, 4Every facet of the game will be covered including hitting, fielding, base running, team play and more. The goal of this program is to improve overall performance and foster self-confidence. Required Equipment: Glove.

Boy’s LacrosseSessions 3, 4Designed to provide instruction in all aspects of the game, including: passing, catching and ground balls, the rules of the game will also be introduced and reinforced. Players will be separated into groups based on skill level. Required Equipment: Stick and helmet.

SessionsThe McGann-Mercy Summer Academy will run

Girl’s LacrosseSessions 3, 4This program will focus on stick skills, individual/team drills and games. The rules of the game will be introduced and players will be separated into groups based on skill level. Required Equipment: Stick and goggles.

The Science of Crime SceneSession 1Learn the science behind crime scene investigations.4 Develop powers of observation and asking good questions4 Collection and analysis of evidence including handwriting, ink, hair, and fibers4 Fingerprint dusting, lifting and analysis4 Put your new skills to work solving a simulated crime scene!

Flight!Session 1Introduction to aviation and rocketry. Taught by a former Air Force instructor pilot, participants will learn:4 About the forces that enable flight4 About the parts of an aircraft and how they operate4 How to build their own gliders and model rockets & see how they fly!!

Civil War AdventureSession 2Go back in time to learn what it was like during the Civil War.4 Civil War Drill like a soldier4 Set up and experience camp life4 Play 19th century games4 Experience period food4 Learn songs of the North & South

Creative Expression through ArtSession 5Drawing and Painting: A hands-on art program where participants will experiment with a variety of drawing and painting techniques. Mediums may include Acrylic paint, watercolor, and color pencil. Participants will be encouraged to be creative and will keep all artwork produced.

Advanced Skills Program (for students, grades 7-12 only) Session 5 The advanced programs are geared to provide intense, no-nonsense training for both male and female players. Programs are designed to enhance skills and prepare participants for successful varsity play. Mercy ChefsSession 5This program demonstrates how other disciplines learned in school are incorporated in the basic skills of food preparation. “Projects” include:4 Measuring of solids & liquids (using math skills)4 Observation of effects of temperature changes on the properties

of food (using science)4 Exploration of different foods and cooking equipment

Hogwarts Summer SessionSession 4Based on the world of Harry Potter books and movies byJ.K. Rowling.4 Find your house through the sorting hat4 Follow a Marauders Map and make a wand4 Meet mythical creatures in the Forbidden Forest4 Attend classes for Divination, Potions and Transfigurations4 Play Quidditch and participate in Hogwarts Trivia4 Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus!

Survival Camp (ages 10-12)Session 3Based on the story of “The Hunger Games”, this program will teach participants outdoor survival and team strategy skills. 4 What district do you come from?4 Learn basic survival and first aid skills4 Design your own costume4 Meet Jabberjays and Tracker Jackers4 Feast and compete in a fun Quarter Quell

RoboticsSession 3Participants will learn the basic mechanics behind movement, electricity and robotics as they explore the components necessary to construct their own robot.

Wood WorkingSession 4Learn how the pieces fit together ….Explore how using simple math skills combined with basic tools can result in a custom creation. Children will complete and bring home their own project.

Remedial ProgramsEach session is tailored to specific disciplines and grade levels. All programs are taught by a certified teacher with a remedial

education focus. Set up as core program group tutorials, each session is grouped according to grade and will have 10-12 students.

Reading/MathEach program will run between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., five days per week.Grades 3-4: Session 1Grades 5-6: Session 2Grades 7-8: Session 3Grades 9-10: Session 4
