So many children have a hard time because their

fathers never lead them to Jesus.

Six hundred teenagers in New England prisons: Six out often had fathers who drank to excess. Three out of four were permitted by parents to come and

go as they pleased. Seven out of ten had homes where no group or family

activities were enjoyed. And for all of them, there was no church attendance.

1,200 descendants of the criminal Jukes family: Some 400 of these were physically self-wrecked. 310 were professional paupers. 130 were convicted criminals. 60 were habitual thieves and pick-pockets. 7 were murderers. Only 20 ever learned a trade, and of these half of them

owed it to prison discipline.

Honestly, we don’t know much about lots children. They married men who did not believe Lot when he said

Sodom would be destroyed (Gen 19:14). They gave their father enough wine to get him drunk so

that they could have children with him (Gen 19:30). They gave birth to the fathers of the Moabite &

Ammonite people, enemies of Israel (Gen 19:37-38).Where did Lot go wrong?

GENESIS 13:10-11

Lot was extremely Selfish

“Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east” (Gen 13:10-11, ESV).

When strife arose between Lot & Abram’s herdsmen, Lot chose for himself the best land.

That decision cost Lot dearly. During the rebellion of the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah,

and their allies, Lot was held hostage and Abraham had to rescue him (Gen. 14:11-12).

When Sodom was destroyed, Lot’s home and possessions were destroyed, his sons-in-law refused to flee and died, his wife turned into a pillar of salt.

After the destruction of Sodom, his daughters turned to immorality to have children.

All of this occurred because Lot was selfish and put his own interests above those of Abraham.

Was Lot an extremely selfish father?

The Spirit says in the last days “people will be lovers of self” (2 Tim 3:2, ESV). Fathers, are we being selfish? If so, we may lose our children!

GENESIS 19:4-11

Surround them with Immorality

“But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.’ Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, and said, ‘I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.’ But they said, ‘Stand back!’ And they said, ‘This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.’ Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down. But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door” (Gen 19:4-11, ESV).

The next time we read of these daughters, they are having an incestuous relationship with their father (Gen 19:30-38).

Where would these daughters have learned an “anything-goes” sexuality? They had lived in Sodom for some time & seen everything

right & good trampled upon. Although Lot may have earnestly tried to raise his

daughters properly, the pull of immorality was just too strong.

What are we to do? As much as possible, we need to guard what our children

see. Live as a pattern before your children. Teach your children.

“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (Deut 6:7, ESV).

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Eph 6:4, ESV).

Are we guarding our children?

“If he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard)” (2 Peter 2:7-8, ESV).

Even righteous fathers make mistakes.
