Introduction to Maiden Magic

Welcome and thank you for purchasing Maiden Magic! You have just taken the first step in learning to properly handicap maiden races. First of all, I feel it is my obligation to be as up front and honest with you as I can. No matter how well I explain it nor how well you learn these maiden systems, you will not win every maiden race after you read this book. That would be impossible and anyone who says you can win every race of any kind is a liar. After all, its not much of a gamble if there really was a sure thing.

With that being said, I hope I have not disappointed you and like 99% of the crowd, you have realistic expectations. What you will come away with after reading this book and watching the videos is a better understanding of how to dissect and handicap maiden races. With this valuable information, you will win more of them than you ever did before.

So without further adieu let’s get started.

Things You Should Know

There are a few things you should know before we take another step. Some of you may already know this stuff, so please bare with me as I tell those who are new to horse racing. Its important that anyone who wants to learn these systems are all on the same playing field and my duty as a teacher to give them the nuts and bolts before confusing them with handicapping statistics.

First of all we will discuss the fractional times and the horse lengths that are involved. The half mile is what we will focus on because it is the most relevant distance in the methods used in this book. Each system revealed in Maiden Magic is different, but for most of the systems we will be looking at the last race the horses were in.

Take a look at the racing form screen shot I have provided here and note the last race this horse (Rachel Hay) was in:

Page 6: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

6

The red arrow above indicates and points to the half mile time of Rachel Hay's last race. This is the half mile time the leader of that race set which was 462. That's 46 and 2/5 of a second. To figure the half mile time that Rachel Hay actually set, we must look to the blue arrow.

Rachel Hay was 7 ¼ lengths behind the leader at the half mile. It is important to note that one length is equal to 1/5 of a second. Trust me on this, that is the national standard and not just something I dreamed up. Knowing this, the blue arrow tells us that Rachel Hay ran the half mile in 47 4/5. If a length is equal to 1/5 of a second, you add 7 fifths of a second to the time of 46 2/5 and you get 47 4/5. Also notice that we rounded the ¼ of

a length down. If it had been ¾ we would have rounded it up a length.

I hope that makes it clear. Let us look at another example:

Page 7: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

7

In the example above the half mile was run in 47 1/5 by the leader in Yankee Player's last race. Yankee Player was just a neck (nk) behind the leader practically running the same time as the leader at the half mile mark, so his half mile time was figured at 47 1/5. Simple, right?

One more example:

The leader here went the half mile in 46 3/5 but Go Go Grande was 7 ½ lengths behind the leader. That meant his time for the half mile was 48 flat.

If you are still unsure about how to figure this, study over the formula again and again until you completely understand it. Use the length to seconds formula, making sure that your math is coming out to the times I have listed. Its crucial to your maiden handicapping success that you fully understand how we arrive at these times.

Update!

To make this easier, we have created a simple, yet very effective tool to help you figure the half mile times. This tool was previously not a part of Maiden Magic, so it only goes to show you how important it is to add your name and email to our members list. Hopefully you have already, but if not, email us here and make certain that you get any future updates automatically sent to

you at no charge. You can be added by sending your name and email address to:

[email protected]

The latest tool we've added is the Maiden Stopwatch. This will automatically determine any horse's half-mile time by simply adding the appropriate numbers into the stopwatch and clicking the “Get Half Mile Time” button.

Click Here To Access The Maiden Stopwatch

Here's how it works. Let's say the leader time was 472. The first box in the Stop Watch asks for the Leader's time, so you would enter in: 47 2/5That's 47(space)2/5. Be sure to enter the space or the calculation will be wrong. The number 2 means 2 fifths, so you would enter 2/5. Got it?

The next thing you would enter is the “Lengths Behind” information. Let's say our horse was 9 ¾ lengths behind. We know that we want to round the ¾ up, so we would enter the number 10 for this horse's lengths behind. Do not use fractions in this box, but always round up or down to the nearest whole number.

Now you would simply click the Get Half Mile Time button and abra-cadabra.... we have our half mile time for this horse! How's that for a bit of Maiden Magic?!

Be sure to bookmark the Maiden Stop Watch page as it will be beneficial to any handicapping you do! It is also important that you remember this page if you are unfamiliar with a racing form. Cross-reference where we have our blue and red arrows with where they would be on your form. This is a great way to memorize what figures you should be looking at for these systems. In time, it becomes second nature!

Okay, now let us look at the “class levels” associated with horse racing. They appear in every kind of race from maidens to stakes races. The maidens, or horses who have never won a race at all, have their own denotations of class. Listed below is the order in which maidens are classed.

Some of the numbers may be different but for the most part that is how it descends. Naturally the “straight maidens” are a higher class than the rest of them, and they tend to drop down the ladder from there.

Later on we will be discussing the Dog Eat Dog system and it is important for that system that you are familiar with the maiden classifications and how they are represented in the racing form.

Keep all of these things in mind as we progress through all of the Maiden Magic systems. Don't hesitate to cross-reference these formulas and images while you study these systems and videos.

Why Are Maiden Races So Hard To Handicap?

That is a good question. Why do maiden races seem so hard to figure out? They are just another race on the card, so why does it seem so impossible to pick a maiden winner?

For starters, you should know that this is one of the biggest misconceptions in horse racing and most people feel that it is practically “impossible” to accurately handicap the maidens. This is not the case and Maiden magic will show you exactly why!

Some feel that maiden races are the “truest”form of racing. That these maidens, being green and new to the sport, will do what comes natural for them. Others feel it's too soon to handicap them. Almost like letting a teenager drive for the first time... you're just not sure exactly what might happen and it's going to make you nervous!

Although there is some truth to both sides of this argument, “impossible to handicap” is not a term I would use. It's just not the truth and by having these Maiden Magic systems at your disposal you are way ahead of the crowd that believes this.

I used to just pass on maiden races, because I thought that no maiden system could help increase my odds with them. Quite honestly, there are not many maiden systems floating around, because a large percentage of handicappers feel that its just another shot in the dark. But one day I decided that if I wanted to have a realistic chance of winning a pick 6 or pick 3 (or any such exotic wager for that matter) I had to have a working knowledge of how to handicap a maiden race. Without it, I was just another sucker in line to hand over my cash!

My research led me to several types of maiden races and down several paths to figuring out the maiden phenomenon. And I realized that maiden races were not as difficult to handicap as I had previously thought. I came up with 5 types of maiden races and at least 5 different ways of handicapping these races. Now let me be very clear here: Maiden races are just like all races. And there are no guarantees. But if you apply these strategies laid out in this ebook you will be on your way to having more success with maiden races

like I have. Let me tell you, having those big days at the track sure beats having that close call where all you walk away with is the worst quote any handicapper hates to make-

“I HAD IT... if it weren't for that maiden race!!!”

Also I would like you to use the videos that accompany this book so that you will understand and grasp each one of the methods outlined here. You will find that maiden races are really quite easy to handicap and a whole lot of fun. The link to the tutorial videos are found after each system's explanation. Remember: YOU are not in a race to learn these. Much time has been spent breaking down every aspect of every system and then following up with a visual tutorial. We at Maiden Magic want you to have success with these systems, but it is imperative that you learn them at your own pace and recognize these payout opportunities whenever they arise. You'll be a better handicapper for it!

Let me list the five methods here before we dive in.

The Fastest Half Out of the Money Method.

This was the first method I developed in the maiden races and it works quite well. It will point out live horses that have a great chance of winning and will produce a nice payoff in the process. Don’t worry about the title of the method, I will explain it later. You will also want to incorporate the Maiden Stop Watch with this one to save you time.

13

First Call, Second Call, Last Call Method

This method is based on the speed burners and their ability to get out and go. I will show you how to spot the contenders without a doubt. You'll learn exactly how to spot them and separate them from the rest of the pack.

The Bailout Method (Originally named The Pristine Bullet Method)

This method is based on the bullet workout theory, but it is not at all what you may think it is. Note the word “Pristine”. I renamed it the Bailout Method because of all the bailouts our government is giving, I think we horse players ought to have a bailout of our own. This method has certainly bailed me out plenty of times and it will you, too. Of all the Maiden Magic systems, this one (as the name suggests) is by far one of our favorites!

Page 14: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

14

The Sprint to Route Shuffle

This method is for the route races and stamina horses. These races are a mile or more and the Sprint to Route Shuffle should be at the top of your list when these races come along. This strategy really points out some good payers, but it doesn’t come along every day. When it does it usually means “boxcar” pay offs. It is a nice little shuffle for you to consider.

The Dog Eat Dog Method

This strategy is for those races where you have maidens that have several lines of past performances and every horse in the race looks like a dog. This is the hardest maiden race of all to figure out, but we have a way to maximize your efforts here for the best payoff.

So there you have the five types of maiden races we are going to cover, and I will now show you how to handicap each one. Before continuing on to the first system, take a look at the overview video for a clearer grasp of what you should expect from Maiden Magic and the systems we are about to cover.

The Fastest Half Out Of The Money Method

I will never forget the summer I stumbled upon this method. I just started checking it out and boom boom boom. The winners began to flow and the payoffs were an average of around $14.00. I simply could not believe my eyes. Of course, I got greedy and my money management strategy was non existent, so you know what happened. But I sure did enjoy the ride.

Let me explain the title. First of all “The Fastest Half”. This refers to the horse with the fastest half mile in his last race. This is very effective.

For those of you who do not know I will explain what the fastest half is and where it is located. In the example below, the first “call” is the 23. That is the quarter mile. The 47 (where the red arrow is) is the half mile. That is what we are concerned with.

Page 17: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

17

Here is a better look:

Now I know I did not get the full past performance in the picture but I got enough of it to point out the method. The red arrow indicates the call of the race at the half mile (472). We can see that the blue arrow indicates the horse’s position at this call of the race, and he was in second place just a length off the 472 which was the time of the lead horse at the half mile in that race.

So this horse’s time at the half mile in the race was :47 and 3 fifths at the half mile. Now if you check the rest of the horses half miles in the race you will see that this horse has the fastest half mile in today’s race. I won’t show you the rest of the horses here for obvious space reasons. Check out the video to see examples. (It won’t be these horses but some later examples)

It does not matter where he finishes the race. But for the purposes of this method he must have the fastest half mile and finish out of the money in his last race.

Page 18: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

18

Why must he have to finish out of the money? Well while I am not 100% sure, I do have my own theory. You see I tested this and while some horses had the fastest half mile and finished second or third, they just did not perform well in today’s race. I believe it is because they had given their all in the last race and came up short, so the trainer decided to “rest” them today and look for a better race down the road when their horse would be fresher. This is just my opinion. Also the odds of those horses today were greatly decreased when they finished in the money.

So with this method the horse must meet the following requirements to qualify for this method:

1.) In his last race, the horse must have the fastest half mile over any horse in today’s race.

2.) And he must not have finished in the money in his last race.

And if you are wondering what the green arrow is for, it indicates that this horse is running today at its lowest level ever. Looking at Heza Storm Cat's past performances, we see the maiden classifications steadily dropping. Take

a look-

It had never been at the $12,500 level before in its lifetime. This was the easiest competition he had ever faced. I show this because it plays an important part in using common sense in the other methods in this book.

Page 19: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

19

Always take notice of the maiden classifications from past performances to present day.

Fortunately, good trainers have a sense of knowing where the horse belongs, but sometimes they place the horse somewhat ambitiously. After running several times in straight maidens they decide it is time to drop the horse into the claiming ranks.

This is a very important point. The trainer wants to win his maiden race as soon as possible. This is because at most tracks you have to break maiden within a certain amount of races, or you must go elsewhere to do it, like a cheaper track.

This is a great incentive to get the horse in the right spot and win. And this is good for you as a player because you will be able to spot the “lowest level ever” horses fairly easy.

On a side note, paying close attention to maiden classifications is a great way to determine “tie-breakers” for these systems. Because of the numerous variables to consider in handicapping any race, sometimes you will stumble into tie-breaker situations where 2 or more horses might fit the system's qualifying factors. When this happens one way to determine between the horses is to study the past performances of the qualifiers and use the maiden classifications to pick your choice. This little factor can make the difference between picking the winner or second place! There are other tie-breaker factors to consider, too, but more on these factors is discussed in the videos.

Oh, by the way, when I saw this one in the form I knew he was a winner, but I figured he would pay around $5.00 to win. Wrong.

Page 20: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

20

I am totally convinced that the reason he paid so much was that the public did not like the fact that he finished out of the money, so they ignored him even though he had the fastest half mile in the race and was going to his lowest level ever. Too bad for them- great news for you and me!

Watch this video here.

As you can see, the Fastest Half Out of the Money system can not only increase your odds of winning maiden races, but can also hit the exotics when implemented into your own betting strategies. For the most part, maidens and longshots make the exotics worth betting and now that you have this system (along with the 4 others) you are that much closer to seeing the big paydays exotics can bring you.

Now let’s investigate the next method: The First Call, Second Call, Last Call Method.

Page 22: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

22

The First Call, Second Call, Last Call Method

This method has to do with the speed burners. These are the horses that can get out of the gate and go. It is a pretty well known fact that speed horses win more than their fair share of all races. And when you talk about maiden races, the percentage rises. Let us look at some examples of just what we are talking about.

Make It Simple shows that she can get out of the gate and go noted by the highlighted portion above. This horse was second at the first call and first at the second call. The qualifying rule for this system is as follows:

The horse must be first or second at the first two calls of their last race.

It does not matter where the horse finished, just that he was first or second the first two calls. Make It Simple finished 6th in her last race, but because

Page 23: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

23

she met the criteria for the first and second call, she is a contender with this system.

It gets no “simpler” than that! Let’s look at another race altogether (from the day before), and I'll show you a tie-breaker situation:

This horse shows that she was first the first two calls of her last race, so she qualifies in the first call, second call method. Even though she finished eighth, it doesn’t matter. She was first or second the first two calls. It is that simple. That is the only qualification of this system.

But what about this contender?

Page 24: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

24

There were two qualifiers in this race, so what should we do? I explain that more in the video. But in essence when there is only two qualifiers you should bet them both to win. Now use some common sense here. Obviously if the horse is way outclassed today you should back your bet down or don't bet him at all. I can’t be with you and advise you which one to bet, but usually you should bet them both. If there are three qualifiers in the race then you should disregard one of them and get it down to two. Be careful and proceed with caution and you should do well. If there are four or more qualifiers then pass the race altogether.

Here's what would have happened if you had bet them both:

Page 25: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

25

Stormy Sister pulled this off with a really nice pay-out, but notice where Songinmyheart ended up. By betting them both to win, we still would have made a profit. Let's say you had intended to bet $20 on this race. With 2 contenders, you split that $20 down the middle- $10 to Stormy Sister to win and $10 on Songinmyheart to win. You would have lost the $10 on Songinmyheart, but Stormy Sister paid you a nice $96! That's a hefty $76 profit after your initial $20 bet. Not bad at all!

And what is the “Last Call” in this method? Watch the video below to see!

Page 27: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

27

The Bailout Method (formerly named the Pristine Bullet Method)

This method has to do with the 5 furlong workouts of the horses in the race. Let me explain about the work outs because they play an important part in conditioning the horses for a race.

When a maiden is being trained, the trainer (if he is a decent trainer), will bring the horse around slowly. He will work the horse three furlongs a couple of times and then 4 furlongs a time or two. But when he is getting him ready to race and wants to get an indication of just what the horse can do, he will work him 5 full furlongs.

This is the workout we are interested in. If the horse worked a bullet work, it means he worked the fastest 5 furlongs of the day. That is what we want for the first half of this system. So here is rule one:

The horse must have a bullet workout for 5 furlongs.

Now let me show you an example of this.

Page 28: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

28

As you can see, this horse had a bullet 5 furlong workout as shown in the highlighted part. The dark “dot” beside the date is the bullet. The horse qualifies for the first part of this method, but fails the second part. What is the second part? Here is rule number two:

The horse had to have outworked at least 30 horses in the bullet work.

As we can see, this horse worked faster than only 22 horses. Why must he have had to work faster than 30? Well, I had to set the standard somewhere and after much testing, 30 horses was the key number to better odds in this method. Let’s look at another horse in the same race.

Here we see that this horse meets the qualifications of the method. He had a bullet 5 furlong work and he outworked 48 other horses. Let’s put that in perspective.

We see that 48 horses worked 5 furlongs that day. Do you think that all 48 were maidens? Of course not. There were multi winners in that bunch. There were high claimers and allowance horses in that number. And this maiden

Page 29: How to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful … to Handicap Maiden Races and Achieve Powerful Positive Results . 2 ... 5 Maiden Systems Overview Overview Video- WATCH THIS VIDEO

29

ran faster than all of them. Do you think that he will remain a maiden very long? Not likely.

Here is the rule for this method:

The horse must have worked a bullet work at 5 furlongs and he must have run faster than at least 30 horses in that workout.

There you have it. The Bailout Method. I will tell you that when one comes along you had better get to the windows, because this method rarely loses. And if they do lose, keep an eye on the horse. He will run back to that 5 furlong bullet work. He will win.

The Sprint to Route Shuffle

This method has to do with the route races, those races that are a mile or longer. Also this is for 3 year olds only. That is because we want the races where the horses are pretty much new to route races. The trainers are getting the maidens ready to go long, and we have some pretty interesting things going on.

We first want to look at the horses’ next to last race. More on that later. We will be figuring the horse's half mile time in that race. Let’s look.

Now we want the next to last race to be a sprint. That is because a lot of trainers prepare their maiden horses for a route by tuning up in a sprint. They like to bring them up to the route slowly and pounce when they get the route.

They may not get the effort the first route they try, but if the conditions are right and they are the fastest…bingo!

Now to determine if they are the fastest, we have to check their half mile time in their next to last race, which was a sprint.

The first highlighted part is the half mile time of the race. That is the half mile time the leader of the race ran. The second highlight is where our horse was at the half mile and how many lengths he was behind the leader. We see that he was 4 ½ lengths behind. That makes his half mile 45 2/5. I can tell you this was the fastest half mile of this race (more in the video). That makes her the play in this method.

This horse looks like she cannot even go a sprint without tiring much less a route of ground. The public will ignore her in the odds, but we know that she can go faster to the half mile than any of her competitors.

So here are the rules for the Sprint to Route Shuffle:

1. The race must be a mile or longer.2. 3 year olds ONLY (we're looking for new to route horses)3. The next to last race must be a sprint.

Once you've found the contenders that meet these key factors, you must then choose the horse with the best half mile time in their next to last race.

The Dog Eat Dog Method

There are some maiden races that look like no one wants to win. No one. So you feel like flipping a coin. Don’t do that. I used to be the same way when faced with these kinds of races. My answer- I generally went and got a hot dog or something. Then I realized it was a good way to miss out on some big payouts. So I developed a method for these kinds of maiden races, too. I call it the Dog Eat Dog method.

This Method is for Mdn 10000 or Lower ONLY

I try to determine which trainer is really trying to win this thing. You know, some trainers will try and get the weight off the horse by putting a “bug boy” on him thereby getting a 5 pound weight allowance. Or maybe he is going for a cheaper claiming tag to get the weight off. Maybe he is using Lasix for the first time or putting blinkers on the horse for the first time. These are all signs of a trainer trying out different methods to make this horse a winner.

When trainers are desperate for a horse to win they have to implement these types of tactics. Take a look-

This horse has potential as his trainer has decided to race him with blinkers on for the first time indicated by the red arrow. Putting blinkers on a horse for the first time keeps him from viewing anything except the track in front of him. The blue arrow pointing to the L means that he is also on Lasix. Plus, looking at his past performances below, he has ran 3rd at this level (Mdn 10000) before and 3rd at a slightly higher level (Mdn 12500).

That is fairly competitive, so he is definitely a contender for this race. Let’s move on.

This horse is also trying blinkers for the first time and is going to its lowest level ever. So the trainer is trying a couple of things to get this one to win. He is also putting him in a state bred race after competing in an open company race. However he has not been competitive in his first two starts, so I am a bit skeptical. However I can’t rule him out simply because it is his lowest level ever, and he is trying blinkers for the first time.

Lindas Jag is another one going for the lowest level ever and shows being competitive at the 12,500 level a few races ago. I really don’t like this one too much, but the lowest level ever is in play. I have to list him as a possible threat.

Brahms Dynasty is another horse that is showing blinkers for the first time and going to his lowest level ever. If you are going to play this race you can’t leave him out. Now for one more.

This horse finished 2nd and 3rd at a higher level, so he has to be included in the contenders. In fact he probably will be the favorite.

So what do we do to break the tie? We have five horses that we have determined are “live” horses in this maiden race. We can’t bet all five of them to win. But maybe we can do something to help us maximize our chances to make some money in this race.

The best thing to do here is box these 5 horses in the $1 trifecta. This would cost $60. That would beat trying to bet one of the horses to win and then get sick because another one won. If $60 is just a bit much to risk for you on this type race then you can try and eliminate one of the horses and get it down to $36.

Besides, like I said, this is a dog eat dog type race where none of them stand out. So I would probably risk $60 and box them in the trifecta and go get me a corn beef sandwich and begin to handicap the next race.

How about that?? The $60 we risked turned into a staggering $1342 from the $1 trifecta we played! Just use your head in the maiden races and things like this will happen.

Don’t get me wrong. There will be times when you won’t win a penny. And there will be times when you come out smelling like a rose. Just have fun and don’t try to hit the homerun every time. There is always tomorrow.

Putting Them AltogetherNow that you have the basics of each of these systems, let's get some perspective and put an order to the Maiden Magic systems.

For every maiden race I handicap, I start with the BailOut Method. Using this method, we know that if we spot a “BailOut” horse, we have a fast winner ready to prove himself. This system generally trumps all other methods for the maiden races. So start with it.

The next step (provided that there is no BailOut horse) is to determine how long this race is. If the race is a mile or more, I hone in on the Sprint to Route Shuffle. This system is geared towards our long distance races, so as a standard, this is the system we should consider next. If we fail to produce any Sprint to Route contenders, we move on to the Fastest Half.

If the race is less than a mile, I start off with the Fastest Half Out of the Money method. Again, we are looking for a good payday on a fast horse, so don't forget the “out of the money” part. If the top contender with the fastest half mile was in the money (ran first, second or third), the system is null and void. Sure, you might have spotted a winner who won some money in his last race, but the odds will be in his favor and your payout will be low.

When the Fastest Half fails to produce an “out of the money” pick, I start in with the First Call, Second Call method. This method is more than likely going to reveal 2 or more horses to choose from (not always, but more often than not), so it's a good idea to use it as a back-up plan for the Fastest Half. Remember, there's nothing wrong with betting 2 picks with this method.

If all else fails, the last thing I turn to is the Dog Eat Dog. Use this method as a last resort.

Remember, common sense is the key here. Not every race is going to go as we had hoped, but with these methods enlisted in your handicapping arsenal, you will increase your odds of winning and have a cutting edge over handicappers who pass on the maidens.

To get a really good look at how to put these 5 systems into play, check out the video below.

Closing Thoughts

The maiden races are really not that hard to get a handle on. It mostly requires a little common sense and an awareness of the conditions of the race. Like I have said before, map out your strategy the night before you go to the races when everything is quiet and peaceful, because we know how hectic it can be at the track.

Anyway I hope this course has helped you and just remember to have a fantastic day at the races.
