How tobuild aParadeDelivered by NYCI’s Youth Arts Programme, How to Build a Parade is a 3-day residential youth arts practice summer school in NUI Galway, running from the 19th – 21st June 2013. How to Build a Parade will offer workshops, evening events and lots more to stimulate your imagination and send you home with a wealth of ideas and techniques for developing creative approaches for your work with young people.

The 3 day summer school will give you the inspiration, practical know-how and skills to create the most exciting and high quality youth arts performances for your parade be it local, national or international! You can choose to work with street theatre and spectacle innovators Buí Bolg, to create and perform with spectacular large scale puppets, drum with renowned bodhrán player, percussionist and Riverdance performer, Robbie Harris or engage in three days of innovative physical performance and movement with the thrilling UK based theatre company Frantic Assembly. The workshops are designed to offer you very practical art form techniques and performance skills while also developing the confidence around the processes involved in high quality youth arts activity and ways to turn your big ideas into real-life creative projects! You don’t have to be planning a parade to use these skills in your youth work setting.

How to Build a Parade is about approaching your work with young people in a fresh way, it is an opportunity to be inspired, use new art forms and break out of your everyday routine and get creative!

The specialised workshops and events are tailored to offer those in the youth work sector an opportunity to develop new skills for arts work with young people. Offering creative skills development and practical approaches you will come away from your experience with a ‘toolbox’ full of new skills, ideas and confidence.

Create

As well learning new skills for your own practice, How to build a Parade will be an opportunity to get together with your peers across the sector, make valuable connections, swap stories, and celebrate what you do every day.

The summer school aims to provide an intensive yet invaluable chance to create fresh ideas for your youth work practice and to encourage you to take the time to build new creative pathways and develop the confidence to use them in your work with young people.

Participants

The summer school is designed is for anyone working with young people, in the non-formal education sector who wishes to explore ways of introducing, enhancing and extending youth arts provision for the young people with whom they work. It is aimed at both those looking to improve their art-form and delivery techniques or those totally new to youth arts.

Cost & Application

The cost of attending the summer school is €300.00 and includes all workshops, accom-modation, food and evening events.

There is a special ‘Early Bird’ price of €260 if you complete your booking and payment by May 17th.

How to Build a Parade will offer participants the chance to gain in-depth experience in an art form from a youth centred perspective. You can choose one of the following workshops

Each participant will be asked to list their preference for a workshop. The workshops are limited to 15 participants and are formulated in such a way as to address the participant’s individual learning requirements and goals. The workshops will create a space for youth workers to come together and explore, share ideas and learn skills.

Street Art & Spectacle with Buí Bolg

The street art and spectacle workshop will be facilitated by Wexford’s Buí Bolg. Buí Bolg was established in 1994 with the aim of bringing arts out on to the streets and making it accessible for all. Offering a combination of originality, imagination, impeccable professionalism, a unique sense of humour with just a touch of mischief to add to the magic, the company has very significant experience working within the youth work sector and their activities include street theatre, festivals, giant puppets, and much more!

Learn

Over the three days Buí Bolg will explore the steps in the creation of a community arts parade, and introduce you to the principles of building and performing with giant puppets. Starting small you will work over the three days to eventually build a giant puppet suitable for much mischief on the grounds of NUI Galway! You will gain very hands-on techniques and skills, as well as the practicalities for working on a project like this with your youth group.

Create

Youth workers will have the opportunity to get new ideas, innovative skills & huge amounts of inspiration out of their three days with Bui Bolg.  From their learning over the three days participants will be able to bring back tonnes of motivation and ideas to their organisation and can transfer the skills acquired to working with young people on a variety of street art and spectacle projects.

Connect

The street art and spectacle workshop will be all about working in teams to build the biggest, brightest puppets Galway will see this summer. You will work with together with your peers to gain strong high quality arts techniques using affordable, simple and accessible materials while gaining sig-nificant team-working skills.

Drumming and Percussion with Robbie Harris

Robbie Harris is a bodhrán player and percussionist who has recorded and performed with artists including Bobby McFerrin, Clannad, Bob Geldof, and world music artists such as Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan. After having toured extensively with Riverdance – The Show, he joined the Broadway production in New York. While living there he was a guest lecturer at Julliard and The New School, NYC.

As musical director of The Rhythm Corporation he has led a twenty strong drum corps at international sports events in Dublin. He was Musical Director with St Patrick’s Festival’s in-house production City Fusion, a massive piece of street theatre with 250 performers from 30 different countries which won The Best Pageant Award three years running. He is Co-director of the Big Bang Festival of Rhythm which celebrates diverse styles of drumming from around the world.  He has worked with theatre companies including The Abbey, Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, Rough Magic, Corn Exchange, Macnas, The Ark-A Cultural Centre for Children and Dublin Youth Theatre.

Drumming and percussion offers one of the most dynamic, fun and accessible ways of engaging with young people. This is a unique opportunity to work with one of the most exciting and renowned musicians and facilitators in Ireland. Participants will be introduced to performing with drums and percussive instruments through a hands-on ensemble process. Over the course of the workshop you will explore a variety of drumming and percussive techniques, you will be exposed to rhythms from all over the globe and you will learn how to develop the skills for rhythmic improvisation. You will gain the practical know-how and technical skills for devising and presenting drumming and percussive performances and how to apply what you have learnt when working with young people in parades, street theatre and stage based performances. No previous musical experience is necessary and instruments will be provided for all participants.

Create

This is an opportunity to learn how to create a big bang in your youth work organisation! Participants will devel-op an understanding of how drum-ming and percussion can be used to explore and access the creativity and abilities of the young people they work with and will develop the skills to design and structure workshops and create performances in various youth work and youth arts settings.

Connect

Working with your peers you will gain significant team-working skills through a hands-on drumming experience. You will be guided through the all the steps of devising and presenting a group performance developing the confidence and practical skills to apply what you have learnt with the young people you work with.

Learn

This fun and energetic workshop will guide you through Frantic Assembly’s trademark physicality and devising process to de-velop your confidence and skills in physical performance. The skills you will learn can be applied within a variety of youth work and youth arts settings from teambuilding exercises to parade choreography, street arts and outdoor performance, flash mobs and youth theatre contexts. The workshop begins with a physical warm-up, using team-building and trust exercises, followed by exploring creative tasks to devise physical material for performance. The workshop will offer you the understanding, practical know-how, technical and creative skills necessary to engage with young people through physical performance. Whilst this is a physi-cal workshop, it is accessible to those who may have little or no previous experience in this area so why not take the opportunity to experiment and try something new.

Physical Performance with Frantic Assembly

Frantic Assembly is a UK based theatre company that has been creating thrilling, energetic and unforgettable theatre since 1994. The company attracts new and young audiences with work that reflects contemporary culture. Vivid and dynamic, Frantic Assembly’s unique physical style combines movement, design, music and text. In addition to its productions, Frantic Assembly operates an extensive Learn & Train programme introducing 6,000 participants a year to the company’s process of creating theatre, in a wide variety of settings. Frantic Assembly also delivers Ignition, an innovative vocational training project for young men, particularly targeting those with little previous experience of the arts. Vicki Manderson will facilitate this workshop.

Connect

The physical performance workshop will be rooted in team-work and ensemble process. Connecting with your peers and collaborat-ing to produce a final exciting performance will support you in developing the skills and motivation to take on physical performance projects within your own youth work set-tings.

Create

Physical performance can be one of the most engaging, absorbing and affordable ways of working creatively with young peo-ple. This workshop will give you the skills to promote physical confidence amongst the young people you work with and to help them look beyond self perceived limitations within a fun, energetic and safe environ-ment .

In addition to the daily workshops, a number of evening events will be organised, giving you the op-portunity to meet with the other participants attend-ing the summer school, celebrate what you do every day while enjoying all that the summertime in Galway has to offer! Evening events will offer a chance to connect with your peers, will enhance your workshop learning and celebrate your work with young people.

AccommodationDuring the 3 day summer school participants will be staying at the NUI Galway Corrib Village apartment complex. Cor-rib Village is comprised of 4 bed en-suite apartments stylishly designed to incorporate all contemporary requirements. The apartments are a 10 minute walk across the NUI Galway campus. The complex is also served by a frequent bus service.

Dining and meals

All food costs are included in the overall summer school fee of €300.00. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided on cam-pus, each day of the summer school and vegetarians and those with special dietary requirements can be catered for.

About NUI Galway and Galway City

NUI Galway campus, as well as the Cor-rib Village Apartments, is within walking distance of Galway City, which offers a wealth of activity for visitors. The city can be accessed by road, rail and by air. The Corrib Village Accommodation offers guests free parking throughout their stay.

NYCI reserves the right to make any necessary changes to content, delivery and assessment of this course due to unfore-seen circumstances. Any anticipated change will be communicated to participants as soon as possible.
