The internationally bestselling story of a young woman whose death in 1951 changed medical science for

ever . . .

With an introduction by author of The Tidal Zone, Sarah Moss

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. Born a poor black tobacco farmer, her

years after her death, with devastating consequences . . .

Rebecca Skloot's fascinating account is the story of the life, and afterlife, of one woman who changed the

medical world for ever. Balancing the beauty and drama of scientific discovery with dark questions about

With an introduction by the author of Circe and The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller

In Lucky, a memoir long-hailed for its blistering honesty and wit, Alice Sebold reveals how her life was

irrevocably changed when, as an eighteen-year-old college freshman, she was raped and beaten inside a

tunnel near her campus. In this same tunnel, a girl had been raped and dismembered. By comparison, Alice

Though Alice's friends and family try their best to offer understanding and support, in the end it is Alice's

A riveting and highly readable account of the Congo massacre, peopled by callous monarchs, corrupt adventurers

and a handful of genuine heroes.

With an introduction by award-winning novelist Barbara Kingsolver

In the late nineteenth century, when the great powers in Europe were tearing Africa apart and seizing ownership of

land for themselves, King Leopold of Belgium took hold of the vast and mostly unexplored territory surrounding the

Congo River. In his devastatingly barbarous colonization of this area, Leopold stole its rubber and ivory, pummelled its

people and set up a ruthless regime that would reduce the population by half. . While he did all this, he carefully

constructed an image of himself as a deeply feeling humanitarian.

Winner of the Duff Cooper Prize in 1999, King Leopold's Ghost is the true and haunting account of this man's brutal

regime and its lasting effect on a ruined nation. It is also the inspiring and deeply moving account of a handful of

missionaries and other idealists who travelled to Africa and unwittingly found themselves in the middle of a gruesome

holocaust. Instead of turning away, these brave few chose to stand up against Leopold. Adam Hochschild brings life to

this largely untold story and, crucially, casts blame on those responsible for this atrocity.

How Proust Can Change Your Life: Picador Classic

Alain de Botton

General Fiction > Literary Criticism

Picador ǀ Rs 399 ǀ 224pp ǀ PB ǀ B Format

March 07, 2019

A fascinating and illuminating look at Proust's most famous works by renowned philosopher Alain de

Botton.

With an introduction by comedian and novelist David Baddiel

A novel in seven volumes, Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time is considered a major literary work of the

twentieth century. And even more crucially, one that you should have read by now. However, as one of its

most distinguishing features is its staggering length, many of us feel intimidated and perhaps, even, fatigued

at the thought of diving in. Alain de Botton's hilarious and unexpected Proustian manual, is then, the perfect

antidote to this problem.

In How Proust Can Change Your Life, de Botton masterfully distils what Proust says about friendship,

reading, being alive and taking your time, and mixes it with his own, no less nourishing commentary. As de

Botton rereads Proust for our collective benefit, we see the continued relevance of his work and the rich

and varied insights he can offer us, from how to reinvigorate your relationship to being a good host. This is

Proust as you've never seen him before. He may even change your life. Author Bio: Alain de Botton is the author of eight bestselling books including The Consolations of Philosophy, The Art of Travel and Essays in Love. He was born in 1969 and lives in London.

Reviews

'It contains more human interest and play of fancy than most fiction . . . de Botton, in emphasizing Proust's healing, advisory aspects, does us the service of rereading him on our behalf, providing of that vast sacred

lake a sweet and lucid distillation' John Updike, New Yorker

In January 1895 Henry James anticipates the opening of his first play, Guy Domville, in London. The production fails, and he returns, chastened and humiliated, to his writing desk. A doctor’s riveting story of loss and hope in the world of cancer

What is it like to encounter cancer? How does it feel to face the unknown, to enter a world of hope, loss, and

dread?

From the diagnosis of his childhood friend’s mother to his poignant memories in the lab, David Scadden’s seen the

unknown world of cancer from the lens of a young boy, a classmate, a researcher, a friend, a doctor, and a

neighbor. Scadden chronicles his personal memories of cancer – his visits to his sick neighbor and his classmate

who left school and never came back.

Now Dr. David Scadden, co-founder of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and one of the world's leading experts on

immunology and oncology, writes his memoir with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael D'Antonio. With

riveting stories and moving compassion, Scadden and D’Antonio paint a still rapidly changing landscape in the

context of all too common stories of loss. Ranging from Scadden’s personal childhood memories to his triumphs

and regrets as a doctor, Scadden illuminates a light at the end of a dark tunnel.

Through opening a window into the science of medicine in the world of the unknown, Scadden and D’Antonio

humanize cancer while inspiring action that we all so desperately need.

Deep Nutrition Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food

Catherine Shanahan, M.D.

Diet & Nutrition

Flatiron Books ǀ Rs 750 ǀ 512pp ǀ Royal

A self-published phenomenon examining the habits that kept our ancestors disease-free—now with a

prescriptive plan for “The Human Diet” to help us all live long, vital, healthy lives.

Physician and biochemist Cate Shanahan, M.D. examined diets around the world known to help people live longer,

healthier lives—diets like the Mediterranean, Okinawa, and “Blue Zone”—and identified the four common

nutritional habits, developed over millennia, that unfailingly produce strong, healthy, intelligent children, and

active, vital elders, generation after generation. These four nutritional strategies—fresh food, fermented and

sprouted foods, meat cooked on the bone, and organ meats—form the basis of what Dr. Cate calls “The Human

Diet.”

Rooted in her experience as an elite athlete who used traditional foods to cure her own debilitating injuries, and

combining her research with the latest discoveries in the field of epigenetics, Dr. Cate shows how all calories are

not created equal; food is information that directs our cellular growth. Our family history does not determine our

destiny: what you eat and how you live can alter your DNA in ways that affect your health and the health of your

future children.

Deep Nutrition offers a prescriptive plan for how anyone can begin eating The Human Diet to:

*Improve mood

*Eliminate cravings and the need to snack

*Boost fertility and have healthier children

*Sharpen cognition and memory

*Eliminate allergies and disease

*Build stronger bones and joints

*Get younger, smoother skin

Deep Nutrition cuts through today’s culture of conflicting nutritional ideologies, showing how the habits of our

ancestors can help us lead longer, healthier, more vital lives.

Author Bio Cate Shanahan, M.D. is a board certified Family Physician. She trained in biochemistry and genetics at Cornell

University before attending Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She practiced in Hawaii for ten years where she

studied ethnobotany and her healthiest patients’ culinary habits. She is currently runs a health and weight-loss

clinic in Denver, CO, and serves as the Director of the LA Lakers PRO Nutrition program.

The Dichotomy of Leadership Balancing the Challenges of Extreme Ownership to

Lead and Win

Jocko Willink, Leif Babin

9781250247100

Business, Finance & Management Leadership

St. Martin's Griffin ǀ Rs 599 ǀ 320pp ǀ Royal

March 12, 2019

The importance of balance as a leader by the #1 New York Times bestselling authors of Extreme Ownership.

Every leader must be ready and willing to take charge, to make hard, crucial calls for the good of the team and the

mission. Something much more difficult to understand is that, in order to be a good leader, one must also be a

good follower. This is a dichotomy; a Dichotomy of Leadership. It is, as authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin wrote in

their bestselling first book Extreme Ownership, “Simple, Not Easy.” Now, in The Dichotomy of Leadership, the

authors explain the power inherent in the recognition of the fine line that leaders must walk, balancing between

two seemingly opposite inclinations. It is with the knowledge and understanding of this balance that a leader can

most effectively lead, accomplish the mission and achieve the goal of every leader and every team: Victory.

Using examples from the authors' combat and training experience in the SEAL Teams and then showing how each

lesson applies to business and in life, Willink and Babin reveal how the use of seemingly opposite principles—

leading and following, focusing and detaching, being both aggressive and prudent—require skill, awareness,

understanding and dexterity; all attributes that can be honed. These dichotomies are inherent in many of the

concepts introduced in Extreme Ownership, and integral to their proper implementation and

effectiveness. Dichotomy is essential reading for anyone looking to lead and win.

Author Bio

JOCKO WILLINK and LEIF BABIN served as U.S. Navy SEAL officers in the toughest urban combat mission in the

history of the SEAL teams. Their task unit remains the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraq

War. After returning, Babin and Willink founded Echelon Front, a leadership training company that teaches others

to build and lead their own winning teams using lessons learned from the battlefield. Their first book, Extreme

Ownership, is a #1 New York Times bestseller.

Praise for Extreme Ownership:

“Leif and Jocko are the real deal. I’m honored to have served with them. They led SEALs in the fight through

the hell that was the Battle of Ramadi. This book shows how they did it.” —Marcus Luttrell, U.S. Navy SEAL

and #1 national bestselling author of Lone Survivor

“The smartest, most revolutionary management approach since Jack Welch's Six Sigma.” —Don Imus, radio

host, Imus in the Morning

"One of the best books on leadership I've ever read and a tremendous war story book as well." —Marc

The Hundred-Year Marathon China's Secret Strategy to Replace America as the

Global Superpower

Michael Pillsbury

9781250081346

Politics & Current Affairs International Relations > Diplomacy

St. Martin's Griffin ǀ Rs 599 ǀ 352pp ǀ B Format

March 28, 2019

#1 National Bestseller

"[Pillsbury] is correct to assert that China constitutes, by far, the biggest national challenge to America's

position in the world today."-The Wall Street Journal

For more than forty years, the United States has reached out to China, helping it develop a booming economy and

take its place on the world stage, in the belief that there is little to fear--and everything to gain--from China's rise.

But what if the Chinese have had a different plan all along?

The Hundred-Year Marathon reveals China's secret strategy to supplant the United States as the world's dominant

power, and to do so by 2049, the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic. Michael

Pillsbury, who has served in senior national security positions in the U.S. government since the days of Richard

Nixon and Henry Kissinger, draws on Chinese documents, speeches, and books (many of them never translated

into English) to reveal the roots of this strategy in traditional Chinese statecraft and track how the Chinese are

putting it into practice today.

Pillsbury shows how American policymakers have been willfully blind to these developments for decades--and he

includes himself in that critique, as he was once a leading voice in favor of aiding China. He also calls for the

United States to design a new, more competitive strategy toward China as it really is, and not as we might wish it

to be. Now featuring a new afterword, The Hundred-Year Marathon is a wakeup call for all Americans concerned

about how we have misread the greatest national security challenge of the twenty-first century.

Michael Pillsbury is the director of the Center on Chinese Strategy at the Hudson Institute and has served in eight

presidential administrations. Educated at Stanford and Columbia, he was an analyst at the RAND Corporation and

a research fellow at Harvard and has held senior positions in the Defense Department and on the staff of four U.S.

Senate committees. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute for

Strategic Studies. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Si Hussain is an experienced CEO. Over the past decade, Si has held chief executive and senior management roles in several listed national and multinational businesses. Si qualified in 1991 as a chartered accountant. During his quarter-century career Si has been author and examiner across a number of business subjects and has delivered training extensively in finance, economics and accounting to students and professionals from around the world.

"Pungently written and rich in detail, this book deserves to enter the mainstream of debate over the future of U.S.-

Chinese relations."--Foreign Affairs

"Despite dealing with a weighty subject, Pillsbury says everything that he wants to say . . . [in] this highly readable

book. It deserves to be widely read and debated."--The Christian Science Monitor
