Clearly state your expectations for students in your class.I
clearly state expectations at my Course Orientation and
in the syllabusWork submitted should be original; that is, in
your own words.
It is expected that the exams that you submit to me be your own
work, written in the first person and original; if I find any
evidence to the contrary you will receive 0 points and will
recommend that you be administratively withdrawn from the
course.
For example Clearly describe with statistics two means of water
conservation that you and I could use on a day to day basis to save
this precious natural resource.
Use open-ended questions
Another example
More than once I have heard people that have read this passage
say that the statement "to watch a fierce green fire dying in her
eyes" impressed them more than any other Leopold writing. Some have
said it moved them to tears. Explain to the rest of us why you
think that this passage may have so impressed people who read
Leopold's work.
Besides being open-ended these questions can also function as
reflection tools.

assignments, exams, discussions, research reports, group activities
