How to Add Any Percussion Instrument in Garritan Libraries to a Finale 2012 Score
1. With the Setup Wizard (or ScoreManager) add a blank staff to the score.
2. Go to the ScoreManager and locate that staff. Under the “Device” column, select “Aria Player.”
3. Once you have selected “Aria Player” as your device, the ScoreManager will show “Edit Player…”
in the “Device” column. Be sure to note which bank and channel are associated with that staff.
4. Click “Edit Player.” This will open the Aria player. For that bank and that channel, select the
percussion instrument you want on that staff. In our example, we are loading the North
American Buffalo Drum from the Garritan World Instruments library.
5. Back in the ScoreManager, for that staff, select “Percussion” as the “Notation Style,” the
appropriate “Staff” for your instrument (eg. “1-line with Full Barline”) and pick a percussion clef
as “First Clef.” When you do this, under “Perc. Midi Map,” “None (Built in GM)” should appear.
6. When you picked “Percussion” as the “Notation Style,” the “Percussion Layout Selection” menu
appeared. Ignore it. Instead, click on “None (Built in GM).” A drop-down list will appear. Select
the instrument you have chosen in the Aria player. In this case “GWI North America: Buffalo
Drum.” Your instrument (eg. “Buffalo Drum”) should now appear as the name of the Perc. MIDI
Map.
7. Now click the “Settings” button beside “Notation Style: Percussion” in the Score Manager. When
the “Percussion Layout Selection” menu appears, click on the “Create” button in the lower left
corner. An empty layout map will appear. You can change the name if you wish in the “Layout
Name” box.
8. Click the “+” sign in the lower left to add a new note. Under “Note Type:” look for your
instrument in the options listed in the drop down list. If you cannot find it, look under “Custom.”
If your instrument was not in one of the ready-made lists, you should see it listed as a “custom”
instrument.
9. Pick the instrument you wish to assign to your note. It should now appear under “Note Type” in
the “Percussion Layout Designer.” Select the staff position and note heads you want for your
instrument. If you want to add more instruments, repeat the process by clicking on the “+” sign
in the lower left to add more notes and associated instruments.
10. Click the “OK” button when done, then click “Select” for your new layout. You will be returned
to the ScoreManager with your new instrument staff setup and ready for use.
