Status of rural veteransStatus of rural veterans• More than 44 percent of military recruits,

and those serving in Iraq & Afghanistan, come from rural areas. Among all VA health care users, 40.1 percent (nearly 2 million) reside in rural areas, including 79,500 from “highly rural.” Rural veterans have worse physical & mental health related to quality of life. VA has programs for rural veterans’ health, but less for housing.

Status Status ---- continuedcontinued• Veterans often have challenges

becoming or remaining homeowners. Maintaining modest homes owned by low-income & elderly vets is also big challenge. U.S. soldiers in recent conflicts increasingly come from--and return to–rural areas. Rural users of VA programs are growing proportionate to urban VA users. Young people in most rural zip codes are 22 percent more likely to enlist than youths in cities.
