A NOTE FROM THEARTISTIC DIRECTORLast autumn, we inaugurated the reopening of the Board of Ocers Room with recitals by Christian Gerhaher, one of the greatest living baritone voices for lieder. He and the subsequent 2013 recitalists—violinist Vilde Frang and pianist Anton Batagov—could not have been more positive about our new recital space and its excellent acoustics.

Invigorated by this, we welcome leading soloists to our 2014 recital series to perform major works from the classical music repertoire. Igor Levit masterfully interprets some of Beethoven's most cherished sonatas, István Várdai virtuosically performs a number of Bach's solo cello suites, and Anna Lucia Richter expertly brings to life some of Wolf's most sublime lieder—all while making their U.S. recital debuts.

Together with the fearless talents of Manhattan's very own FLUX Quartet enlivening Morton Feldman's groundbreaking String Quartet No. 2, this year’s recital series oers rare opportunities to witness major new talent in New York performing some of the most inspiring music in this gem of a recital room.

I hope you enjoy these intimate performances.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMI first heard of the mystique and aura of Feldman’s String Quartet No. 2 (FSQ2) in late 1998. About three months prior to FLUX’s premiere of this grand work in 1999, I received four thick, bound, over-sized scores—and at that moment, the piece’s immensity struck a new chord with my psyche. Today, 11 performances and nearly 15 years after the premiere (at New York City’s Cooper Union), I am awe-struck by FSQ2 more than ever—no single piece of music I know can receive the level of reverence and admiration that this masterpiece deserves.

There are many aspects of the piece that overlap with characteristics of standard repertoire, including traditional notation and recognizable motivic structure. What takes it above and beyond and into a new realm is its glacial scale and scope, which erases many conventional perceptions of form. For instance, unlike the neatly packaged four-bar phrases in both old and new music, FSQ2’s melodic cells can repeat as much as thirteen times, and some sections can last fifteen minutes or more before moving onto something new. That the piece has clearly defined sections certainly helps the musician conceptualize its architecture. But the sheer size of FSQ2 throws musical memory for a loop. In a standard pop song the chorus might come back within a minute, and in sonata form the first theme almost always recurs within ten minutes; but with FSQ2, recapped sections might not occur for 60 minutes or more.

From the perspective of string technique, playing FSQ2 requires incredible physical stamina. The length is a huge hurdle in itself—let’s face it, string players (in fact, any musicians) are not trained to play six hours without a break. Another big challenge, perhaps less obvious, is the act of playing very quietly. It actually requires much more physical energy to do less rather than more. Downshifting both the speed and pressure of the bow goes against many years of training, and much repertoire requires the players to be in constant motion. Furthermore, the suspension of the right arm in mid-air—working against the gravitational pull of the arm’s natural weight—can become rather uncomfortable. Imagine yourself typing on a keyboard that is positioned about one foot higher than its normal placement, and doing that for six hours. That partly describes the experience of playing this piece. To deal with this, we are constantly experimenting to find ways to minimize motion and streamline energy use.

Much has been made about the biological challenges of performing FSQ2, including an announcement in the Village Voice (prior to the premiere) that comically fancies the potential use of a catheter. But I have learned that the lack of bathroom breaks is just one part of the biological equation. The other part is about fending off dehydration and the depletion of energy, which is far more critical than any concerns of a biological mishap. Moreover, it has become clear that the challenge of maintaining mental focus exceeds the physical demands. It is just way too easy to get swept up in Feldman’s mesmerizing sonorities.

As for the performance itself—each one is unique, impacted by the space, the city, the audience, and the time of day. Australia, Norway, Canada, Mexico, and various cities in the U.S. have produced different experiences in concert halls, gallery spaces, and even a hotel convention room. Most of our 11 performances have occurred after dusk, but one actually started at 12:00pm and finished before sunset, with the extra complication of adjusting to the European time zone (so it almost felt like a 6:00am-12:00pm event). The 3:00pm starting time for this performance at the Armory is a novel one for us, and I certainly look forward to new surprises.

Wherever this journey takes us, I know that eventually, an appreciative applause will emerge from the stillness of the last suspended silence. I will gather myself and my thoughts, take a deep breath, and then be humbled by another transcendental experience of a lifetime.

ABOUT THE ARTISTSThe FlUX Quartet has performed at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, the Kennedy Center, Walker Art Center, in Mexico at the Chihuahua International Arts Festival, in Ireland at the Samuel Beckett Centenary Festival, the Kitchen, Bowerbird in Philadelphia, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center, and have been heard on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” WNYC’s “New Sounds” and “Soundcheck,” and WFMU’s “Stochastic Hit Parade.” Last summer they made their debut at Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Their recordings include a new Morton Feldman CD from MODE Records, and other composer compilations on the Tzadik, Innova, Cantaloupe, and Cold Blue Music labels. New dates include Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music in Australia, La Jolla Summerfest, and Calgary Pro Musica with Evan Ziporyn.

FLUX Quartet has paved the way for all younger quartets focusing on similar repertoire, moving between the great works of Gyorgy Ligeti, Giacinto Scelsi, John Zorn, and Iannis Xenakis to avant-garde jazz greats such as Henry Threadgill, Oliver Lake, and Roscoe Mitchell. They bring an equal flair to music from previous centuries. FLUX actively pursues commissions, with recent grants from the American Composers Forum, USArtists International, Aaron Copland Fund, and the Meet The Composer Foundation. The group also explores new voices from its numerous college residencies throughout the United States, including Wesleyan, Dartmouth, Williams, Princeton, Rice, and the College of William and Mary.

Strongly influenced by the irreverent spirit and “anything goes” philosophy of the fluxus art movement, violinist Tom Chiu founded FLUX in the late 1990’s. The spirit to expand stylistic boundaries is a trademark of the FLUX Quartet, and thus the quartet avidly pursues projects with genre-transcending artists working in mixed media. These artistic synergies have led to an acclaimed recording with experimental balloonist Judy Dunaway, collaborations with choreographers Pam Tanowitz and Shen Wei, and the 3-D video work Upending with digital art-ensemble OpenEnded Group. Most recently, FLUX appeared both on film and the soundtrack of River of Fundament, the latest work by visionary artist Matthew Barney and composer Jonathan Bepler.

ABOUT THE ARMORYPart American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to experience epic and adventurous presentations that can not be mounted elsewhere in New York City. In its first six years, the Armory opened its doors to visionary artists, directors, and impresarios who provided extraordinary experiences in a range of art forms. Such was its impact that in December 2011, The New York Times noted, “Park Avenue Armory … has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City.”

Built between 1877 and 1881, Park Avenue Armory has been hailed as containing “the single most important collection of nineteenth century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is currently undergoing a $200-million renovation designed by Herzog & de Meuron.

“Fast, furious and unstoppable … this Macbeth [knocks] the breath out of everyone, audience included.” – The New York Times

Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston make their highly-anticipated New York stage debuts in the U.S. premiere of the intensely physical, fast-paced production by Branagh and Rob Ashford, which places the audience directly on the sidelines of battle, where blood, sweat, and the elements of nature can be directly felt as the action unfurls across the traverse stage.

Support for this production has been provided by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Susan and Elihu Rose, The Bodman Foundation, Lizabeth and Frank Newman, Kirkland & Ellis LLP, and the Richenthal Foundation.

Commissioned and produced by Park Avenue Armory and Manchester International Festival.

THE PASSENGERjuly 10 – 13

“In Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s holocaust opera The Passenger, we have one of the most unflinching engagements with this subject ever made.” – The Daily Telegraph (UK)

Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s opera is an astonishing account of the horrors of World War II and the unshakable hold that memories and torment from that time can have, even today. Visionary director David Pountney brilliantly stages this landmark work, which only now makes its eagerly-awaited New York premiere.

Co-presented by Park Avenue Armory and Lincoln Center Festival.

The Passenger is a co-production of Bregenzer Festispiele, Teatr Wieki, English National Opera, and Teatro Real.

Houston Grand Opera’s performances of The Passenger in New York are generously underwritten by Bill and Sara Morgan and Amanda and Morris Gelb.

ST MATTHEW PASSIONoctober 7 – 8

“astonishing … I challenge you not to be an emotional wreck by the end of it.” – The Guardian (London)

Regarded as one of the quintessential masterpieces of classical sacred music, Bach’s revered account of Christ’s Passion is ritualized by inventive director Peter Sellars, who creates a communal grieving process in a radically inclusive approach that eliminates the separation between artist and audience. Simon Rattle leads the Berliner Philharmoniker, a cast of superb singers, and extensive choral forces for the U.S. premiere of this epic production.

Co-presented by Park Avenue Armory and Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival.

The Berliner Philharmoniker residency in New York City is made possible by a leadership gift from the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation, and Marina Kellen French.

Park Avenue Armory and Lincoln Center would like to thank Carnegie Hall for its collaboration in making possible these Berliner Philharmoniker performances.

ABOUT THE BOARD OFOFFICERS ROOM

e Board of Ocers Room is one of the most important historic rooms in America and one of the few remaining interiors by Herter Brothers. After decades of progressive damage and neglect, the room completed a revitalization in 2013 by the architecture team at Herzog & de Meuron and executive architects Platt Byard Dovell White Architects to transform the space into a state-of-the-art salon for intimate performances and other contemporary art programing.

e Board of Ocers Room is the third period room at the Armory completed (out of 18) and represents the full range of design tools utilized by the team including the removal of accumulated layers on the surfaces, the addition of contemporary lighting to the 1897 chandeliers, new interpretations of the stencil patterns on areas of loss, the addition of metallic nishes on new materials, new programming infrastructure, and custom-designed furniture.

e room’s restoration is part of an ongoing $200-million transformation, which is guided by the understanding that the Armory’s rich history and the patina of time are essential to its character. A dening component of the design process for the period rooms is the close collaboration between architect and artisan. Highly skilled craftspeople working in wood, paint, plaster, and metals were employed in the creation of the building’s original interiors and the expertise—and hand—of similar artisans has been drawn upon for the renovation work throughout.

“e restoration of the Park Avenue Armory seemsdestined to set a new standard, not so much for its scale, but for its level of respect and imagination.” – e New York Times

e renovation of the Board of Ocers Room was made possible through the generosity of e ompson Family Foundation.
