HOSPITALITYThe DLR Group Hospitality Studio is focused on designing lifestyle environments and we believe inspired design can stir an emotional response in every guest. We use a collaborative approach to understand a local community and then curate a project vision that aligns client goals and the brand personality of a hotel within that local environment. We don’t acknowledge boundaries between architecture and interiors. We view the guest experience as a whole. Our hospitality design experience, paired with a passion for story telling through design, delivers a unique solution for every client.

PLACEMAKING

DLR Group strives to start every project with a thought-provoking ideation session to engage owners, understand project complexities, and uncover hidden potential within the local scene. Incorporating art, fashion, food and beverage, and all those in between elements unique to each location helps create an indigenous and

authentic experience for each hotel guest during their stay. These approaches, coupled with our understanding client’s vision delivers an experience that builds guest loyalty to a hotel brand through a meaningful curation of memories.

Designing experiences to create vibrant, memorable destinations.

Thoughtful design leaves room for the place and its individuality to be formed.Design gives an identity to every space and can create cohesive environments that are not sterile or faceless. From a physical standpoint, this is achieved through the intertwining of service and function. Providing a balance of open and intimate spaces allows guests to socialize or detach, based on their needs. From a psychological standpoint, playing with light, shadow, and temporal experiences create spaces with elements of discovery and delight, allowing each space’s individuality to show through.

Encouraging individuality is not opposed to simplicity in design and planning.Clarity comes from proportion in design and use of humanistic materials, all working in harmony. In this way, the simplicity of planning and design inspires the complexity of vibrant, memorable spaces.

Create positive change for individuals and hotels through the transformation of physical places. Our fundamental approach to placemaking is to craft a design that reflects both its unique context and the manifestation of the locale. Our design philosophy and methodology seeks to deliberately promote social interaction and ultimately improve a hotel’s influence on guest experience. Engaging with a wide variety of people and places, we have the ability to design positive change for guest experiences through the transformation of physical places. Our focus on innovation and beauty simultaneously elevates the experience of guests while preserving economic value for the owners.

THE ELIZABETH, MARRIOTT AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION

The interior design of The Elizabeth, Marriott Autograph Collection evokes a light and airy ambiance, accentuated with handcrafted details in furnishings and moldings, juxtaposed by raw and aged wood. The overall sensual quality is familiar yet elegant and sophisticated. DLR Group’s design uses an abundance of neutral tones in painted moldings, unapologetic filigree, and rich ornamentation on walls. Each element is amplified when shadows further reveal their depth in the daylight.

CANOPY BY HILTON MILL DISTRICT

This design of this adaptive reuse project transforms the historic Advance Thresher/Emerson-Newton building into a new Canopy by Hilton Minneapolis Mill District. Built in 1904, the building has been on the National Historic Register since 1977. The exterior combines brick and sophisticated terra-cotta detailing with a broad, projecting metal cornice. The interior consists of heavy timber construction with soaring atriums filled with natural daylight. DLR Group’s conversion of all seven floors from office use to a Canopy by Hilton required a complete renovation removing all interior elements down to the structural frame. The design provides 182 rooms, dining and beverage spaces, and a new sky lounge.

One of the most pressing challenges in the century is to mitigate climate change caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities. Information in this report has been extracted from the estimated operational energy consumption, energy production, and energy optimization of DLR Group designs in 2018. Beyond these typical metrics of achievement, in 2018 we addressed other areas including exploration of innovative materials, indoor air quality, occupant comfort, wellbeing and productivity. These areas further expanded our thinking on sustainability and the role it plays within integrated design.

Raise the Bar DLR Group’s average reduction target of predicted energy use for our high-performance designs has consistently exceeded the national peer group average. In 2018, our integrated designs resulted in a 49 percent energy reduction for all DLR Group 2030 Challenge tracked projects.* While an improvement over the previous year, we are continuing to set aggressive internal targets and widen our performance design approach to reach our goal of meeting the 2030 Challenge on every new project by 2020.

SUSTAINABILITYMeeting the Challenge

*Reduction determined using The Zero Tool, an Architecture 2030 platform developed for building sector professionals to establish energy reduction baselines and targets, compare a building’s energy performance with similar buildings and to codes, and understand how a building achieved its current energy performance.

* GHG EMISSIONS ARE ESTIMATED USING NATIONAL AVERAGE FUEL RATIO FOR ENERGY USE IN BUILDINGS

AND EPA'S POWER PROFILER TOOL
