Benefits

— Energy savings that can bediverted to fund the treatment ofpatients.

— Financial benefits compared tothe separate purchase ofelectricity and heating fuel.

— Environmental benefits related toreduced carbon emissions.

— Flexible technology that can beused to provide electricity, heating and cooling if required.

Cogeneration for Hospitals

There is increasing pressure on thehospitals and healthcare sectors toimprove efficiency. With respect toenergy this takes three key forms – — Making limited financial

resources go further — Improving energy efficiency— Reducing carbon emissions

Using a combined heat and power(CHP) plant in a hospital is an idealway of achieving each of these threetargets. Natural gas is a clean-burning low carbon emission fuel. A CHP plant facilitates the highefficiency use of this fuel, byrecovering not only electricity butalso heat.

When a hospital purchases bothelectricity from the national grid andin parallel gas or another fuel forheating this can lead to high costs.Using a gas engine-based CHP plantfacilitates the purchase of a single fuelsource to achieve both the productionof electricity and heat. The conversionefficiency of a gas engine is veryhigh (>90%) and therefore can resultin long-term operational costsavings for the hospital.

Hospitals by their nature are highenergy consumers. Energy usage inhospitals takes a number of formsincluding:— Electricity – required to power

the lighting and equipment of thefacility

— Hot water – For cleaning &general use

— Steam – For sterilisation, cleaning(more applications needed)

— Cooling – For refrigeration, freezing and air conditioningsystems.

Each of these energy types can beproduced at high efficiency with theassistance of a combined heat andpower facility.

Natural Gas

Natural gas is an abundant, cleanlow-carbon fossil fuel that can bereadily utilised for the production ofelectricity. The high efficiency of theGE Jenbacher gas engine is wellsuited to the provision of reliabledecentralised electricity utilisingnatural gas as a fuel.

The utilisation of natural gas in gasengines is characterised by thelowest carbon dioxide emissionlevels of all fossil fuels. Due to thefact natural gas is low in carbon, buthas a high hydrogen content, naturalgas has the most favourable carbondioxide balance. The combustion of natural gas produces around40-50% less carbon dioxide thanwhen coal is burned to produce thesame amount of energy. Notably italso has low emissions of sulphurdioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen(NOx) and particulate matter.

As a fuel, natural gas is set to becomea significant source of power in thecoming years. Natural gas isprojected to become the mostsignificant fossil energy medium inthe next fifty years.

Application

Natural gas generators can beconfigured in a number of ways. Inaddition to the production ofelectricity, generators can alsoprovide heating as hot water orsteam, cooling water and cleancarbon dioxide.— Cogeneration or combined heat

and power (CHP)— Trigeneration of combined heat,

power and cooling (CCHP)— Quadgeneration or CCHP with

carbon dioxide recovery— Island mode operation –power

production isolated from theelectricity grid

Natural gas generation relies upon awell-developed and stable naturalgas supply.

Our Competence

Clarke Energy has a long andextensive experience in theengineering, installation andmaintenance of combined heat andpower plants for hospitals.

The GE Jenbacher gas engine isknown for having the highest levelsof electrical efficiency on the market. When coupled with a contractualmaintenance agreement with ClarkeEnergy, it will give peace of mind tothe customer that they will achievethe highest levels of availability andhave constant returns on theirinvestment.
