PAIR NEWS
An Inspirational Message – Do what you enjoy and have fun
At the 2017 Summer Ball, Dean Headley left us with a message that applies to every cricketer, young or old. His message was that when you’re playing cricket, or any sport, first you should just look to enjoy yourself. Think of Indiana Jones and immediately the fantasy of exploring jungles, caves, and ruins are brought to life but above all, it’s fun.
Take some time to read about Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor. Not only does his story excite, but the way in which he seeks to entertain in a comedic fashion should also be enjoyed.
With sportsmen and women releasing a constant stream of tedious drivel after playing two seasons at a reasonable standard, it would be interesting to sit one of them down and compare their story of having a particularly tense game of Call of Duty or FIFA, with that of Fermor.
In 1934, as an 18 year old, Fermor set off on a trek across Europe from Rotterdam to Istanbul. With a route taking him through Hitler’s Germany and the Balkans he eventually completed his journey on New Years day 1935.
After the outbreak of war and a brief stint with the Irish Guards he was transferred to the Intelligence Corps due to his knowledge of the Balkans.

An Inspirational Message – Do what you enjoy
Having survived the fall of Crete in 1941, he was sent back to the island where he disguised himself as a Cretan shepherd, lived in freezing mountain caves, and kept himself busy by harassing German troops.
Crete was also the scene of one of the most daring feats of the Second World War, as Fermor was the architect behind the kidnapping of the commander of the German garrison on the island.
There are alternatives of course, without the armed conflict. In 1955, anthropologist Tobias Schneebaum, armed with a penknife and instructions to ‘keep the river on your right’, set off into the jungles of Peru in search of a tribe of cannibals.
So how does all this relate to playing amateur cricket on a weekday evening, a Saturday afternoon, or on a Sunday?
What did Fermor and Schneebaum do? They enjoyed themselves. So remember Dean Headley’s message.
- Have a laugh- Talk up your innings- Tell everyone you were bowling gas- Say you ran at least 50 yards to take that diving catch- Get to know the people you spend a lot of your time
with while dressed in white pyjamas
Begin that fun at the Christmas Quiz on Friday 8th
December at the club
Yours in disorganised fun

Craig Overton – Took just 12 balls to complete
his pair against a Cricket Australia XI in the current
Ashes warm up fixture. Overton now
feels he is in a strong position for a starting spot in
the Test side. We wish him well.
