by 2 for better halves and that’s 10 members – put your name on the list atthe clubhouse if you are one.

Those of us who pay attention to such things have noted the surprisingincrease in price of older British and Italian bikes, even old BSA’s from the1950’s. Last week another of our members acknowledged the inflation proofinvestment represented a serious contribution to his pension – are thesemoneyed capitalists causing the exorbitant prices robbing ancient has beensthe opportunity to ride again the relics of their youth?

Committee Meeting – 22nd Setpember

Only a few turned up , Dick, Jean, Mike, Tim, Fiona, John C and of courseChairman Ian who was well prepared with a list of items for discussion (AdrianH got the wrong day!)– briefly these are as below :Skittles – this probably won’t be possible this year, as the landlord at SixBells is changing and so not available at the moment.  However requests have

been made for skittles so we will wait until the new landlord has arrived (17th

October) and see if it will be possible. Also Dick & Jean tried a meal atCommittee and were not too impressed.Xmas get together – decided might be an idea to do this in January – Friday20th – proposed meal in a  pub (nr Horsham possibly Rusper) and if we getenough interest a quiz.  We will need to know numbers though in order tobook, so please drop me an email or let Dick or I know at the next trial.Trials MattersOne Route Trial – April – we will be running the one route trial again in April(as long as Clint is OK with this, we haven’t asked yet!) – and if all OK planto make this a Charity Trial – with special test at end. There will be just one route – no additional markers like last year whichcaused a lot of confusion – but sections will be of varying ability with generallymoderate sections with a couple of hard ones for the experts.Camping WeekendsNext year we will just have the one Camping weekend at Northlands in July, this seems to be the preferred location and we would prefer to put all theeffort into the one weekend.  However …….2 Way TrialMike proposed a 2 way trial (he had done 20:20 before) – but we decided on10:10 – 10:10 would be better as would take a long time to lay out 20sections that can also be ridden backwards – and we are thinking of runningthis in September in place of the camping weekend.  The principle is that youwill ride 2 laps of 10 sections – everyone will stop for short break – then youwill ride the 2 laps of 10 sections in reverse – could be interesting! To bediscussed further at next Committee meeting.Working Parties

The working party on 19th November planned for Northlands, has beenchanged to Rome Woods – where there is more work needed – possibly new

bridge at far end, or clearing the stream at bottom to open up some newsections – all welcome with any implements they want to bring.TeamsDiscussed the idea of trying to add 1 more team to make 13 in total, we canthen move teams forward a month each year, so everyone will get a chanceto lay out on different pieces of land and varying times of year.  We need todiscuss this again at next Committee Meeting in February, when we willhopefully have most membership renewals for 2012 and can see if we willhave enough riders to do this.PunchesPlease remember to hang the punches back on the hooks – and not throwthem on the floor!

Next committee meeting is 17th February –

AIN’T HALF HOT MUM     Northlands 2nd October 2011

The Laverdo Team John Y, Nigel & Tom B, and Bob Collins laid out aperfect event on a bone dry site even if 25% of the entry were dnfdue to the heat.  The mid-scores were also spot on, if you ignoreHarry’s 88 on yellows where he’d done 2 laps on Blue first, mid-scoreswere 31, 39, 44.  The team followed a route set by Mike, or tried toas, when you got to a section ends, no arrow was in sight, 4 and 5were most difficult to find.  The other surprise was Nigel looking forsection 10 ends found another begins sign – it was 85 deg onSaturday, heads were whirling.

Sunday’s active midge population had early arrivals not scratching, while Adrian confessed to forgetting the Committee meeting andcommented on computer planning that he only knew half as muchagain as Dick.  John P interjects that twice nothing is B all!!  Oldmembers turned up to ride, Richard Darlison and Chris Ronalds plusanother who said he hadn’t ridden for HR for 16 years and saidnothing had changed.  Although an assessment of how many mem-bers would be interested in an annual dinner/social type event wasproclaimed on a prominent notice at signing on, no-one read it unlessit was thrust under their noses.  We collected 20 names and needmore before arranging.  Apologies to whoever rode No. 28 in the lasttrial and obviously got dnf as his second card dropped from thefinished card box as it was taken out of the van – sorry mate!!  PeteB asked twice about a date for skittles as he has 2 requests fromenthusiasts – we are still trying to fix it.  Several riders changedroutes before or during the event, Jack N went down to Blues afterlast months White excursion, Joe D entered Y, changed to B and rode

Page 4: Horsham Riders News October

Y, Kevin T enters B, goes back to start again on Y and Harry I’vealready mentioned – and they say I’m confused!

Walking around it wasn’t long before the first retirement Joe A hadfallen off and badly burnt his leg on the radiator.  Sam took him hometo Mum.  John C told a story of an American guy who fell off his Harleyand the exhaust was burning through his leg, his wife, unable to liftthe bike was told “if you can’t get it off, get the gun and shoot me” –she did!!  Next retirement Ray M who had no back brake.  John P hadno mechanical problems but after one lap sat on his trailer andthought “Do I want to do that again in this heat? – No”  Other inventedexcuses resulted in 50% dnf on yellows.

Sam D was taking his time doing Whites again, he was just startinghis second lap while others were on 3rd or 4th lap, he was rewardedwith a good result.  On section 2 Adrian rode clean, Nigel tells me Ican watch “but it won’t be pretty” – then only had a dab, Stuart Emissed a gate and legged it out.  Tom B missed one too but rode backquick to take a 5.  I meet Harry when he decides to drop to yellow andtell him Mike reckoned it was so dry the sections had to be steep andtight.  Harry said that reminded him of a spiritualist lady he used toknow, I didn’t ask why.  Section 5 Mick D comments “nice to see you”

– he doesn’t mean it and he drops 1, Jake P 2, Ian Mc 2, but Pete Bwas clean, most marks being lost on the bottom tight turn.

Section 6 at last someone displays a problem fit for the crash page inour next colour issue and Steve H was there to photograph Stuart Eoff the bike wrapped around a tree.  Tony F gets a 2 on the big logafter the tight turn at the bottom but Jake hops around and cleans itthen says “Ah!” as he dabs on the exit.  Back for lunch there’s John C,he’s got bloodied legs where he fell entering section 2 and says he’sfeeling groggy.  Clint mountain bikes to site but won’t be on a trialsmachine until next month and Derek H appears, asked what happenedto the camping entry he phoned about it was vague but he is now aGrandad!

The results on whites were not predictable during the day, the threenames at the top were all put forward as potentials but Jake P beingthe best at the schoolboy hop-hop came through to win but a goodmargin from the getting elderly Tony and Peter but the real school-boys Sam D and Tom B were not too far adrift.

Tom H again won on Blues with Steve P catching him up but the nextHR, and full credit to him, was Michael Hyden who hasn’t been gettingmuch practice – his Dad was one of the heat losses!  Yellow riders

Page 5: Horsham Riders News October

suffered most from the steep, tight and heat, except two-time routechanger Joe D finishing a point ahead of visitor Kevin T with Nick G,another one behind - his best result to date.

With Elaine happy to have to go to work, only Rob E was left tostruggle round on the red route which he led from start to finish!

In spite of the early finish for most riders, a few took rather a longrest at lunchtime, three of them including one, reluctant to abandonhis reserved parking space, set off doubling up as they had 2 laps todo with the Laverdo team in tow clearing up after them.  But it wasthe end of a day of glorious sunshine and sweat where everyone wenthome hot and happy.  Rome Woods next, Dan B promises wet andmisery – do try to come!

East Yorks 2 Day Trial ......a long way for chips. The best Fish & Chips in England is in Whitby - so they say. It still is,but the beer’s too frothy! We’d gone north for this clubman 2 daythat has long been our autumnal fixture, I first rode in 1986 on aHonda TLR250 - they were new then! This year Sean P, Ed C, BazRoads and Mike made the long trip north, where we met sometimeHR Mark Stubberfield. For Sean and Ed this was the start of theirScott warm up.......A one lap, one route event on the moors be-tween Scarborough & Whitby is the attraction. Ed put a refurbedengine in the day before, so started in a cloud of smoke due to mis-laid gaskets or was it the day’s heat? But that and a new tyre helpedon a dry and easier than usual first day. Barry, Sean and Ed finish-ing day one close on marks - only the trials winner was clean. Thetoughest section was the last - we all fived that.Sunday was cloudy, cooler but dry - a refreshing change as last yearwas washed out in terrific rain. As expected this was a tougher daywith at least 4 sections for real experts - and Ed, he tried them alland we tried to catch him. But the rest of the sections were perfectlyset considering the range of skills displayed by our team. At the endBarry lost 65, Sean 101, Ed 105, Mike 188 and Mark 265. A real bar-gain trial- entry was £30 - includes lunch on Sunday and dinner inthe pub afterwards. One of the highlights of the trials year.
