DON’T FORGET TO TELL FIONA OR DICK YOUR VIEW ON NEWSLETTER DIS-TRIBUTION

PRACTICE NORTHLANDS OR ‘NOT SO LUCKY KNICKERS!’The practice trial at Northlands had the best entry ever I believe, so a big thank you toall that turned out to support this very important day in the HR calendar. I arrivedabout 9.30 after getting paperwork from Dick and within 10 mins the troops turned upto help set out the seven sections, Adrian Holloway and young Adam who are alwaysloyal supporters of HR and always come along early to help me set out the sections.Adrian did a great job on the yellows and young Adam did the reds and going by thefeedback they did a fantastic job, I had extra help this time from the Davidsons whocame all the way from Saltdean near Brighton. Sam and Joe helped me with the bluesand I feel we got them about right for the day. Mimi my wife thankfully arrived in goodtime to take the cash and make sure everyone signed in and paid so a big thank youto Mimi also. Section four was the hardest to be fair with a tricky tight turn up a steepbank which when setting out I thought was too hard so I rode it on the Twinshock andcleaned it first time so left this part in, however when the trial started I crashed nearlyeverytime I rode it, if there was an award for the most improved rider without doubt itwould have gone to Joe Davidson as he didn’t stop riding the sections until he hadcleaned them and being a bit of a nutter on a pushbike he was entertaining to watchon a trials bike, we had some new members on the day riding Twinshocks which wasnice to see and looking at the smiles they enjoyed themselves so hopefully we will seethem again at HR trials.

Section Ten I laid out numbered flags 1 to 10 which was yellows up to gate 5  thenblues to gate 8 then onto whites, however I didn’t do it hard enough as when I askedhow people where getting on with the last white gates they were sailing throughwithout problems so next time I will make that section a lot harder. Elaine was havinga good day on the sections and riding really well, she even set out a few flags to practiceher tight turns, Section three was up and down banks with a little twist around treesand Elaine had ridden this very well all day until the end when the Gas Gas decided tokick her off, this resulted in Elaine being thrown through the air not in a lady like fashionand landing badly on her rear end. We had to call an ambulance as Elaine was clearlyin a lot of pain, while waiting for the ambulance she was in good spirit talking to Nigeland I overheard a conversation they had about lucky knickers. I won’t go into detail butwould strongly recommend you wear them next time Elaine - lol. We are all pleased tohear Elaine is ok ish bar lots of bruising and tissue damage which will repair, I’m sureI speak for all at HR when I say get well soon. Thank you to Mike for his priceless adviceand help he gave everyone on section 4 which was the hardest of the day and a bigthank you to everyone that helped setout and to all those that stayed to clear up, pleasedon’t forget the next practice trial on the 18th June at Mannings Heath,John C

MAYDAY MAGIC ClubTrial May 1st Mannings Heath

Meet the Team (and thanks to Adrian for the team photo – 1st one for a longtime – note Joe Aldrich was missing due to hurting his foot on Saturday layingout and also Rob and Michael Hyden who helped lay out but were not thereon Sunday) Sam A took over as leader of the Fantics and was supported by

Page 3: Horsham Riders News May 2011

a large team. Adrian H, John P, plus Rob & Mike H who had phoned to assistas they hadn’t joined yet! Sam’s lad Joe helped set yellows, rather hard, hegot an injured foot and couldn’t ride on the day, John eased yellows a bit, maybe too much, as mid score was only 11.

CarachatThe gate was open by 9 am in time for the mighty clubhouse to turn in withouthoots from passing traffic – thanks! Then first to sign on were 3 enduro ladswho’d never done a trial before. Ryan and Dave G with Tom M, they weretalked into riding blues by Ed C, obviously they’d be worth watching as scoringmethods were new to them. Next came the vintage brigade, B Rodemark(Beta), M Holloway (AJS) and Stan Metcalf on a nice Cub – his fame was onan Enfield, I could have lent him one but boy, they are heavy. Both enduroand vintage ended with dnfs as no cards were handed in. Mike Rivett rejoined

after a few years absence and still managed to finish 3rd on white route. JohnM on a Fantic wanted to practice on it for a trial he’s entered in Spain whileHarry R had been traveling the world including Thailand (no commentsplease!) He had to get his son Mark to complete his membership form so he’snow known as Henry! John P had his picture displayed in the clubhousewindow, it was headed ‘Police chase Yorks Trailies’ – from Bognor Newsletter! Finally came Chairman Ian, told of comments on his email ideas he said leaveit to me there’ll be no members left in a years time! I forgot the Braycontingent with a walking-wounded Elaine saying she’ll be back when thekidneys are functioning and she can stop weeing!

Class DistinctionBeing such a nice dry day some took the opportunity to rise above their status.Sam D and Tom B were uplifted to whites as was Sam A after being told by

Page 4: Horsham Riders News May 2011

Fiona that he had to do them as he’d set them out. Adrian H who had beenon yellows went to Blue as he’d seen the course – it was harder than recentevents, mid-score was 45 – about right.

Course CommentsAlthough we had en entry of 48 there were no hold ups, walking in reversedirection it was Jack N I met on Section 10 waving a leg or two he’d shot offat the hooter. Section 8 was more entertaining, Ed and Sean were doingsome gardening down the bottom turn as Paul B went through and cleaned it

– I mentioned this to Ed who reckoned Paul thanked him for helping him avoida 3 – some tale that! John C went into the stream at this section last time,he says if it happens again I’ll say I did it for Dick – in fact he was nearly clean,it was Ed who had to lean on a tree, not Sean. Star performer was Ian Mcwho went down straight into a tree rather painfully nearly over the bars.Worst of all Mick D went and cleaned it while I was watching – howinconsiderate. Meeting the enduro brigade on section 7 I found them in highspirits and enjoying it even though 2 were sharing a bike. One went down toyellows as he’d fallen off too much, the other two were accumulating fivesrather quickly. Section 4 was the one that started with two tight turns acrosssome roots. Adrian H said he’s tried it 9000 times and still couldn’t do it.Paul B is old fashioned he just rode his bike round for a clean but Ed and Seandid bouncy-bouncy at every turn. Mike and Tim watched each other notcleaning it though Mike reckoned he cleaned it on the last lap. Phil and Tonywith 3 offspring and the Dad’s were still smiling. 6 year old Emily was firstoff on her little wheels and legs, Cassie and Phil were not quite as good asJamie, but he did Reds not Y & W.

At the EndAfter one lap Adrian had lost 18 and Sam A ‘a few on the wrong side’. Thewhites finished with a mid-score of 30 but at the top of the list Ed thought hewas No. 1, when the cards were added it turned out there was only a mark in

it and Sean P won. 3rd was Mike R and again it was close just 5 marks

between the next 4. Sam D rode well (his 2nd go on whites) to end 8 aboveMike H and Tom B 4 behind Phil W was another good effort. Sam on 76 mlsaid ‘I never wanted to do whites – it’s Fiona’s fault!’Bognor’s Tom H often wins on the Blue route but first HR was Jack N followedby the Fantic man in time for Spain. Dan B had missed the one route trial but

always comes when it’s dry and warm. He was 3rd HR only a mark in front ofour honourable Chairman. Graham K was well down missing his riding mateDave B and virtually tying with Joe D and Adrian. Martin T finished exhausted,he really did lose a lot!You can’t say much about our leading 3 yellows but Cassie ahead of John Pand Jamie F ahead of the immaculate riding of Mick deserve all the credit inthat class. Adam H well ahead of Emily on Reds but she really was dnf, I’djust added a lot of 5’s so she’d get a result!

Opinion CobblersPre-empting the Newsletter question a few responses were :John P - to download photos takes too longJack N – keep it as it is, it makes it a clubHenry R – It gets passed around the family and I read it after seeing the webSean P and John C both look at the web for results but like to read it.Mr. McCulloch says I’m asking the wrong questions!

Time Gentlemen PleaseIt came quickly, by 3.30 pm it was time to start the additions. Everyone saidthe sections were good and at the right level so thanks to the Fantics for agood event and we hope Joe’s foot will recover for the next one.

Comment from Bob Collins -F, i was in Tenterden on Sunday for a rare open to centre ACU event, licence waschecked before we could sign on. As I was signing on, pre entered obviously, the Sec.of the meeting told me he had an award for me.It was at this point I heard a voice in the queue saying,' Blimey, this Club must have ahelluva backlog with their awards distribution!'What do you think this meant?

APRIL PRACTICE DAYJohn has reported this elsewhere but we need to thank his and especially hisbetter half Mimi who did all the paperwork for the event. Attendance was oneof the best we’ve had and we took in 3 new members too. Adrian H and theDavidson boys set up the course which everyone rode repeatedly until Elainelooped and landed on her backside. The Bray clan had come in a fleet ofvehicles as one of the drivers had been carted off to the dock, Nigel left oneat my place – next morning he came to collect it accompanied by Elaine’sMum. Nigel reported Elaine had a bruised bum – he Mum said if anythinghappens to her I’ll bloody murder Nigel. But she’ll be back even if her saddlewill be surplus to requirements!Footnote – John connected to something called Facebook – Elaine hadposted a note to thank HR for all the messages and was so overwhelmedshe’s made a donation to RFH – Thanks Elaine!!
