NEWS AND COMMENTPractice/Training EventJohn C is having a busy time this month, two weeks after organisingthe team and trial at Walliswood he’s off again running the practice

trial at Mannings Heath on Saturday June 18th. Riders who arehelping set up, be there by 10.30 am, the afternoon event starts at12 noon, ends about 3.30pm.

WE EXCITEDLY HAVE PLEASURE TO ANNOUNCE THE GREATHR CHARITY CAMPING WEEKEND

FRIDAY 1ST JULY – The gate will be open from noon – don’t forget it’sthe top gate on the corner of Green Lane. You should arrive withaccommodation – not too extensive, (mansions are for heaven), foodand water, beer and barbecue food. There are jobs to do like holedigging and fire drill, but by the evening we’re round the campfiregetting awfully jolly!

SATURDAY 2ND JULY – The Kwackers team will be setting out thecourse in the morning for the Yankee trial, starting at 1.30 pm(YANKEE – read sign at start). There’s plenty of time before then foryou to hand in your CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE RAFFLE and to purchaseloads of tickets you can ill afford in order to get your contribution back

– but you will have consolation, all the money goes to Riders for Health. After the trial a selection of entertaining activities may include aRounder Match, A Slalom Timed World Wee Ski Championship etc andof course a Barbeque.

SUNDAY 3RD JULY – The club trial starts at 10.30 am and moredonations collected up till lunch time when the raffle will be drawn andprizes will go out after the event. It’s always a sad time when theweekend is over but this year we’re holding another in Rome Woodsin September. One last thing or two – if you’re taking ics send themto Mike and before you leave the site see if there’s any clearing uphelp needed!

TEAM PHOTOSWe had a good one in the last news, Mike forgot to put names to faces– the object of the exercise! From L to R it’s John P, Mick D, Adrian H– the new team manager, with son Adam and Sam A. His son Joe hurthis foot setting out. Good to see the team photos getting going again

– keep it up!!

MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDEWe had planned for a mountain bike ride in June, but not sure howmany are really interested – normally just get the same faces, Clint,John C, Tim, Fiona, Mike, Pete B and Anita – is anyone else interested

– we will ask you at the Camping weekend and organise for later in theyear if interested. It is a good afternoon, cycling over Hurtwood which

is fairly easy going for most abilities, with a meal in the pub after-wards but would really like to have a bit more interest to organise –so it’s up to you – maybe July/August??

RFH DAY OF CHAMPIONS AT SILVERSTONENigel B and family were due to go only to find A level exams on sameday. I hope I manage to re-allocate them at the trial. This year thetickets were most impressive including an official VIP tag!

THE WALLISWOOD FEW – Club Trial Walliswood, 5th JuneRound 9.30 am John and I stood lonely at the field corner, I writingdown names that wouldn’t be attending due to the day before’sBluebeards, today’s Centre Trial, known injuries etc. Bu the time thesubject was exhausted John reckoned we should go to the local pub –then a van comes in, eventually we get 27 entries. Not good and ashame for he excellent trial that had been set up on the extremeSaturday hear – according to Harry R.

MEET THE TEAMThe Monties shown in the photo did have a sweltering woods to workin. Unusually John had started the course at the far end and workedtowards the entry criss-crossing the non existent stream at the beginsand ends too – it really worked well. John set whites, Steve P andChris H Blues, Harry told me he cut off twigs and sweated! Somesections were long but being bone dry didn’t take many marks andhalf way scores of 19 – 55 – 27 indicate Blues had it hardest andwhites didn’t notice – well Luke didn’t.

Harry R. Steve P. Chris H. John C. Ben R.

SIGN ON SLAPSTICK (even the clubhouse wasn’t there!)Chairman Ian’s Bluebeards efforts left his framework too exhaustedto resume activities but he came as a course adviser to two newmembers Nick Green and Ray Morris, in spite of that they did well!Showing Sean P a picture of my first bike (1931 AJS) and telling himit was my everyday transport he responded with “I suppose in thosedays the alternative was the penny farthing!” Sam Spear rode hisHonda down but it wasn’t able to work on the sections and someattention is needed, but he could have lost 200! No takers arrived forthe Day of the Champions tickets, slave driving employers wouldn’tallow such Hells Angel pleasures. Another oldie threatening are-appearance was Bob Budgen, who came down to see how manyfaces he’d remember, he’s only 70 (nearly) – the oldest riders in theBluebeard was 84 so he’s got years left.

TRIAL TIT BITSTaking a new member round with potential young son to ride Iintroduced him to Jamie Flegg (11) – he tells me he’s riding yellowsbut father Tony adds, with some bits of Red where required, hence hecomes in third! Elaine decided to go for Reds but confidence can slipon steep banks, after a lap she lives to fight another day. Harry’s sonMark breaks a lever so they end up sharing but must have found itfrustrating as no cards from Mark. John Y could have been dnf toowhen he came back with a flat tyre, he took out a pump and keptre-inflating – on one section he’d pumped it too much and slipped for5. Dan B’s son does BMX as did Dan many years ago age 16, he tellsme how he can spin on his front wheel but not on the Beta. Practicingbefore me he asks how far the rear wheel moved on his bounce – mythumb and forefinger indicate! Graham K rode the Yellows, his handcramp didn’t like the front brake – it recovered, he beat John Y to win‘Yellows’.

IT TAKES A SHOWER TO MOVE ANOTHERJust a few spits and most riders decide it’s best to do the other 2 lapsand wait for the tea break, good news for the Monties, they’re allclearing up by 2pm. As riders clock in we hear their tales. Dan B andSean P on Blues had a close battle to finish a mark apart, there wereonly 4 entries in the results so the halfway score is not very represent-ative of the course levels. Luke T finishes whites clean, so asked if itwas too easy he said he enjoyed it as you had to concentrate. MikeR amazes, he’s only been back for a few events and hasn’t lost his

touch (or weight!), finishing on 6. Good to see Tom B on the top routeagain, I hope he stays even when the going is a bit harder!A lack of blues produced many on the clubman course where withGraham pushing John down to second it was Chris H and Toby R whowere the shining HR’s. Chris had set out and was annoyed with hisinconsistency on sections he’d cleaned and then got 3 – we all knowthat feeling.

END GAMEGetting finished early the Monties had collected the flags before Harryand Mark got down there – when the flags were away we talked of thefuture for this site. The land on the far side of the stream is on themarket with a farmhouse, if a new owner comes we may not get theOK to use it. On the field where we park is permission for a new houseto be built too, so it could be curtailed, we have to wait and see. Onthe subject of land does anyone have a friendly farmer/neighbour whohas a site we could use for an event now and again, let us know ASAP.THANKS to the Monties team for giving us an enjoyable event and apity you didn’t get more support for the effort – next time we hope.

HR GROUP TRIAL – (May 8th)Entry for this just topped the 50. Mike, Clint and John C set up thecourse which proved to be quite hard for the Inters though all otherroutes were OK. It had been dry for weeks but a little overnight rainprovided some problems crossing the stream. There were a few

moans about 3 good riders making enormous loop outs – the way toavoid this is straight line marking which clubs won’t adopt althoughit’s an AMCA Rule. However thanks go to all the many helpers on theday – 19 in all! Observers, Secretary, Starter, Results etc = 2 ½riders per worker. And thanks too to the riders who won awards forbest rider on each route – all 3, Steve Farmer, Thomas Moss and RobMcKenzie had ticked the box to give the award cost to Riders forHealth instead.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

I appear to have become club Chairman. Quite how this happened Idon’t know. Some sort of coup took place at Newdigate and that wasthat. When I enquired what my duties were there was no definitiveanswer, no real strategy or final objective. As this mirrors my ap-proach to judging how to ride a section I seem to be just the man forthe job.

I have been riding trials for almost 50 years and have helped out onclub committees but never been a Chairman. I am looking forward tomy designated car parking space, mechanic, section minder and ofcourse the exorbitant salary ( that’s how Dick sold it to me ).

On a serious note I would like to thank Dave Blackman for all hisefforts. He has worked hard to keep all the teams up to scratch, fullymanned and equipped. Thanks must also go to Dick ( and all the

Husbands for that matter ). We have a very well organised club, twelve teams to set out trials and four sites to enjoy our riding.

I may have ruffled a few feathers ref the distribution of newsletters.I’ll explain more fully my thoughts in a later newsletter and when Ihave dealt with the honourable Editor!

Adrian Holloway has taken over as team manager. I would ask allinvolved to help him as much as you can. The more proactive you arethe easier you will make his job. In the past we asked for teamphotographs and last month we got one. Well done - but could we putsome names to faces? I’m sure most people know who is who but ifyou don’t you’re none the wiser.

This is a thriving club and is prospering where lots are failing. Ingeneral we get good entry levels and invariably everyone enjoysthemselves. Long may this continue, I’m not going to bang a drumabout people getting involved with setting out a trial or helping withworking parties but, as with most things the more who get involvedthe easier it is to get things done and the better the club is for it.

FRENCH WORLD TRIALS ROUND –

Lads, this w.e event was closer than the British round, at Ben Nevis, so therewas no reason not to go, was there? Hotel in Rennes booked, Varadero oiland tyres checked, ferry reservations made, Brittany ferries Portsmouth toCaen , out Friday am, back Monday afternoon, no rush to work for us seniors!Trial location, Breal Sous Montfort was just s/w of Rennes, French Federationowned site. Basically a giant hole in the ground full of interesting rockformations, or sections, as us trial enthusiasts prefer. We were sharing Hotelwith the new Ossa works team. I can reveal that Fajardo may well be the next

superstar, but he will have no teeth left at age 30. Four sachets of sugar inone cup of coffee, please!

These pictures are a small sample of the 2 days action. Just study picture 5,those are ends cards on that cliff top. French contender Loris Gubian got greatsupport from noisy crowd, and why wouldn’t he.

Brits in the World class did not shine apart from Jack Challoner who looks areal prospect. Alexz Wigg was struggling with form and a bike that was in noway comparable to Cabestany’s works model, which was superb. Did Imention the blue skies, constant sunshine, french cuisine and scenery? No ofcourse I  bl**dy didnt, this isn't a travel report! Bob Collins
