NEWS AND COMMENTSAugust Trial Mannings Heath – as discussed at the Committee Ian willpossibly be laying out a reverse trial where you will be issued with 1 card for

two laps in one direction, then a lunch break after which you will get 2nd cardfor two laps in reverse direction giving you 20 difference sections. It’s a tryout.

July Motorcycle ride out – it’s only once a year, if you have a road bike jointhe others in the mystery ride out organised by Tim – date is set for Sunday

22nd July – proposed destination Dorset Classic Scramble at a place calledPenselwood between Wincanton and Zeal so meet 8 am in the car parkBroadbridge Heath – Halfords, Carpetright etc – breakfast in café along A272rest of route to be advised – phone Tim Friday or Saturday to say if you’recoming, 01306 712317 – cancelled if piddling down.

Walliswood Trial - with 5 other events on the same day and the locationand rain didn’t help for us to get the lowest entry on record when only 13turned up. Pity because John and his team of Monties not only had a long daysetting out and arranging parking but due to the heavy overnight rain allsections were modified on the Sunday morning. Results reported elsewhere.

South Coast GroupMay event was HR turn to run the event. Mike undertook the job of gettingentries, we ended up with 48 riders, a little down on past years. Setting outthe course were our special Group team, Mike, Clint and John, the site hadbeen wet but it was dry on the day, the team got it about right with scorerange on White 9 – 59, Blue 15 – 140 and Yellow 5 – 77 – only 2 dnf’s. Onthe day we collected 9 observers leaving only 3 sections to self score, 4 werefrom HR, Tony Martin, only 4 weeks from his second hip implant determinedto do his bit, limped down to section 12 getting Gary to carry down a seat andleave him for the day, you can’t keep the oldies down!Another story, Alan Peach arrived with the only schoolboy entry – youngOscar riding his electric bike, he can only be about 6-7 years old but a typicalPeach and apparently his young sister (aged 3) also has a smaller electric bike,a club has been started for these so there’s a future star somewhere. Comingback to Oscar, I remembered Mike Dunstan had donated a rather small crashhelmet for RFH and I got Oscar to try it on – he was delighted and wanted thebox as well, Alan donated £15 and Oscar did 10 laps of the car park in his hatand fell off laughing. As the Club trial had been cancelled Mick D entered his first Group trial, didquite well finishing about ½ way up. Telling Oscar to go and thank him Ipointed out where he was, unaware he’d gone home – the guy who wasapproached by a nipper thanking him for a hat was mystified. Anyway it wasa good day and thanks to the team, the observers and Fiona for doing theresults.

HR – THE POSTPONED XMAS GATHERING (11TH May)This is the night arranged to test the new landlord at the Six Bells, understand-ably the occasion had a lower attendance than hoped but still around 25 hadbooked. The evening was organised by Chairman, Ian, it was enjoyed somuch by the participants with the quiz being read and argued about that wedecided to rename I “The Chairmans Annual Dinner Quiz” – so he’d do it againnext year. Some bookings were not there as food was turning up, Ian phoned John C,he thought it was tomorrow! and was sat in his armchair, Brian B missed outas wife unwell, and Elaine brought her lovely Mum as Nigel was fishing. A fewwifeless guys were released for the evening but found their imbibementimpaired as they had no chauffeur to drive them home. But as a test of thepub it went well with good service and food so we’ll be going again but thepity is they have no skittles. Ian’s quiz reading and commanding organisationwere a delight as befits a Chairman’s financial wizardry.

WALLISWOOD TRIAL – 3RD JuneAfter the cancellation of Mannings Heath last month this one started out withlittle chance of success as five other trials were on locally, add wet locationetc – doom!John, team Monties, picked up the kit on Sat morning, he was already tiredfrom overwork and had to work a lot harder on Sunday morning when heavyovernight rain meant altering all the routes, the site was very wet. Nextproblem was no parking in the field so the stable area got used, so maybe itwas as well that only 13 riders turned up and only 6 finished.Team Monties were reduced to Steve P and Harry R to assist on Saturday butSteve was unable to do Sunday leaving Harry and John to clear up. Some

consolation for Harry was that he was scored in the yellow finishers – 2nd.

Tim H had the lowest score of the day with 55 with Mike Hyden 2nd on blues

and Tom B won 1st on the Whites, with Sam D in 2nd, good for them, if Tony

V and family had stuck at it a 3rd place was assured!Fiona and I had been inactive signing on, we went early hoping that thecamping weekend will see us running in the hot sunshine!

PRACTICE TRIAL – Mannings Heath 16th JuneJohn had gone to see the GP practice at Silverstone with Clint, thanks toAdrian who took over after a few phone calls it all went smoothly. Mick D andMike helped set out the sections, the weather was strangely not raining, buta disappointingly low turnout of seven riders brings these practice sessionsinto question – we’ll get the committee to discuss it.Maybe Adrian will be writing a report, he too will be weary as the day after hewas due in the London to Brighton Cycle Race, leaving at 5 am!! Good Luck!

Training Trial June 16th 2012Normally John Charman would write a brief report on the training trial as hekindly volunteers his time and effort to organise them. However on this oc-casion john wasn’t about and had asked Adrian Holloway if he wouldn’t minddoing it instead, as john had made other plans - Moto GP qualifying withClint and Pete Bowker at Silverstone. I arrived on site at Mannings Heath at about 10am and found Adrian andAdam in the car park before us. On our journey up dad and I had been spec-ulating as to what sort of turn out to expect and, more immediately, whatthe weather was going to do as it did look very unsettled. However as theday progressed the weather remained dry and sunny with a welcome breezepassing through the woods.Shortly after our arrival Mick Dunstan turned up followed by Mike Husbandon his pampera. I agreed with Adrian that I would set out the blues andbetween Adam, Adrian and Mick they would lay out the yellows. And Mike

offered his advice and made suggestions while I set out the blues. Mike andI spent a reasonable amount of time with each section while setting out, andI did struggle with knowing how easy or hard to make them. However withMike’s guidance we got there in the end and set out some good sections. The yellows also looked as though they were offering a challenge to thosewho normally ride them. Although in all honesty some of my blues had beena bit ambitious in places so I did have to back them off a tad, here andthere. By the time we got towards the top end of the woods, where thebowl or bomb crater is, time was getting on. We laid out 2 sections in thisarea which were notably harder than some of the previous ones. They laterturned out to be very good sections to ride offering just the right amount ofa challenge. I saw a number of the yellow riders riding through various bluegates including Mick Dunstan who made light work of a gate that neithermike or I was sure about when we put it in. Thanks to the light breeze andsunshine the ground dried out quite quickly which helped ease off some ofthe sections. When we went back to the car park Steve Hook had arrived with his Shercoand, as always, his camera. Tony Flegg had also arrived with Emily andJamie who both rode yellows throughout the day. Steve suggested that wehave a group photo and being only 9 of us it didn’t take long to get every-one into it

The only notable crash I saw during the day was mine, as it happens, whereI slightly miss judged my entry angle up the bank that we often use. Thislead to the bike shooting out from underneath me on the rear wheel andthen turning, while still on the rear wheel, taking a considerable lump out ofa tree, while still on the rear wheel, then riding itself back down the hill onthe other side of the tree back towards everyone else who was standingaround watching. Thankfully it didn’t hit anyone and finally the front wheeltouched the ground again, just in time for the bike to fall over and finallycome to a halt. While on the subject of crashing if the person that tookhome the Crash of the Day trophy could bring it along to the next trial itwould be greatly appreciated. By the end of the day almost everyoneseemed to be enjoying themselves and progressing well. Adam Holloway Ialso noticed at the last training trial is progressing well and I suspect in an-other years time will be seen on a bigger bike, giving the blues a good go.I’d also like to use this opportunity to say thank you to Mike for helping meset out the blues and to Adrian for stepping in for John and making the daypossible. Hopefully next year we continue to run training trials and getslightly better turn outs.Sam Davidson

MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE – 23rd JulyThanks to Clint for leading this, his knowledge of all the routes over Hurtwoodalways leads to a good ride – the usual few arrived – Mike, Tim, Fiona, DaveRenham, Pete Bowker and Clint of course. We arrived and while Mike, Peteand Dave discussed various trial and mountain bike things (which I thought

could go on for hours) – I got cold and said shall we get started. We rode fora couple of hours – all went well, and being the only woman there I wasallowed to do the easier option while they did the technical bit – all in all agood afternoon – more people should try it! All followed by a well earned beerin the pub and a few stayed for a meal – give it a go next time!!

OUR BEST CAMP WEEKEND – This was Not!

This years’ climate change summer continued to hamper the HRschedule. Getting the equipment on site Friday morning the groundwas real soggy and the grass 2 foot high, a phone call to the farmerconfirmed it won’t get cut and he’d prefer it flattened to mowed, sowe had to get rolling a bit for the campers. The Davidsons were earlyon site with their accommodation street, John C was later and the firstof the few to get stuck and towed out. Good job Adrian H had noproblems getting in and a big thanks to him for digging the loos –urgently awaited by Cassie, as Adrian had completed the gents hesuggested she went there ‘NO FEAR’ says she and wriggled on! Theafternoon weather wasn’t bad. Adrian went on to get the fire going,Cilnt gave a brief site visit on his ancient BSA – he’s done 150 mileson it over 3 years so it’ll last a long time yet.

All set for a good evening, as it turned out the best of the weekend.20 of us surrounded the fire creating a large bag of empties, by 11 itwas spitting but through the night the rain on Mike’s tent was so noisyhe got up at 6.30 am and took his breakfast home.

It’s Saturday, no raining now, Rob E was early as he’s in the team andvery soon bogged down to get towed out by Phil W. Harry R got thatbig yellow monster stuck at an angle, Gary S got him out with a lot ofrevs! We decide to try keeping everyone on the hard standing untilthe Chairman arrives with the annual visit from an old long lost soulseeking middle aged memories of occasions when his wheels revolved

– it’s Tea Bag – time for RIBALDRY! The extensive social engagementsof the Chairman (Ian) were excluding him from the weekend so it’sraised little finger clasping the wine glass stem for him. Gordon B hashad his Bultaco big end repaired and suggested to Tim he needs one(a taco) as his bike won’t start. Gordon’s nephew Rory borrowedFiona’s Yellow 160 for his initiation to off road riding, he did well. Weget an entry of 20 which is quite good – best ever on a Saturday was27.

The Kwackers team Tim, Phil, Tony, Stuart and Rob were joined byAdrian and a horde of Adam’s and Jamie’s to set up the route for theYankee Trial. Rare appearances on a bike were Steve (Snapper) Hook, and Adrian Beech. While Kieran G appeared his body was not cooper-ating after a nights’ celebration. Nobody managed to get a full scoreof 200 in the trial, (it’s only been achieved at HR once or twice) butTony and Phil had a good try and ended up only 5 marks apart. Otherriders were treating the sections more selectively and risking theirresults attempting higher score routes – if it didn’t work – who cares? As stated by Harry R – I saw him do the white on section 10 – he onlyhad a dab. Watching this section which seemed quite harmless JohnC missed a gate, Adam H slipped off, Emily (star of the camp) had 4goes and cheered herself when she cleaned the red.

Next step the slalom where you could have as many tries as youwished and we would take the top three quickest for a run off final. Here it was Emily who kept appearing until she’d had 6 goes – hertimes changing only by two seconds, her Dad Tony set a cracking ratewhich Fiona, the timer, thought might have been a mistake so shemade him do it again – he did it again just 25 secs.

Joe and Adrian tried hard, when we had the final it was those threethat took part – Tony excelled with a 24+ but Joe and Adrian, although achieving their best times were still 26+. Some went too fastat the end where they had to stop in a box, they overshot to fail butGordon’s Bultaco brakes were most efficient – he said!

The evening saw the start of the barbeque delayed as Dick hadn’tbought enough charcoal – Gordon rushes out to get some and comesback with 3 bags, enough for 2 more years. Tim gets a game startedto get big firewood logs, we have a huge fire but it’s still cold in thewind. However the World Championship Wee Skis race has to beattempted but we only get 2 teams – it’s the Walkers and the Fleggs. After they’d all fallen over a few times, Emily gets ditched andreplaced by Cassie so Emily goes out and pushed the other team overand so it went on. A burst of coordinated walking made Phil’s lot thenew World Champions – we weren’t impressed. In spite of fire-kingJoe’s efforts loading bundles of willow we all get cold and most wereabed by 11.30, except Gordon who was asleep in his chair – tentless.

SundayRaffle tickets selling like hot cakes, I rush out to get another book.John P says if you don’t buy tickets the punishment maybe a weekendaway with Dick in the caravan – money flowed after that! Oh Dearthe Bultaco big end is rattling Gordon says – he’ll have to pull out andto his surprise the little yellow Gas Gas starts and rides much easier.Nigel, Elaine and Tom arrive from Seaford – it’s pouring there, SteveP says at Brighton the roads are flooded. We keep looking at the sky

– it’s black one minute and sun the next, fingers crossed. We get anentry of 37 and 11 of those are white riders. Mike had grabbed theflags early and gone out to amend sections before Phil and Tony couldget there but the route ended up extremely easy with 10 scores below30 marks. Sean P was the only one totally clean with Clint and SteveF on 1 and Phil was 1 mark ahead of Tony, but he didn’t have Emilyin tow.

Blues were few, only 6 and they were another lot having an easy time- the highest loss of marks was 21! So we have to look at the yellowsto see a bit of competition. Stuart, another of the Kwacker team, ledthe entry losing only 8 with Mick D on 11 and Joe 12 – then see howprogressive it was till we get to those riders on 38 and into 40’s, evenover 100, but they were on little bikes. Elaine was pleased withherself when she finished and she hadn’t fallen off on the Reds so welldone her and there’s Emily again, keen as mustard in second.Final item on the agenda was the big raffle where we would like tothank everyone for their generosity with donating all the prizes andthen buying the loads of tickets to win them back – Adrian did justthat, as one of the 15 winners he took back the case of beer he’dbrought. We had so many prizes Fiona divided them into 15, mosthaving 2 items, the tickets were drawn by Mick Huskinson and prizeswere picked by the winners. We ended up with 3 over, for riders whohad left early, Les Castle, Adrian Beech and John Charman – prizesawait in the caravan for collection at the next trial.

Over the year we collect odd sums for clothing and as donations forRFH and normally send it with camp takings at Christmas, but as thegovernment is doubling our cheque if sent now that’s what theTreasurer will do and round it up a bit. Altogether we have sent £800so thank you all again, time old Osborne has chipped in it’s £1600!!

When the Kwacker team went to clear up the heavens opened ‘asusual’ they said, they are the only team that has camping trials andthey did it all very well. If it was a low scoring event so be it, thinkhow high scores would have been if the Brighton weather had movednorthwards. Over the weekend it’s the helpers who keep it all goingso it won’t go amiss to give a pat on the back to the team plus Fionafor raffle and timing, Adrian for excavations and others who helpedclear up.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR – IN SUNSHINE!
