Prince Andrew Opens Brighton College Abu DhabiBrighton College Abu Dhabi was formally opened by Prince Andrew, Duke of York at the end of November, in the presence of Shaikh Hamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court. Construction of the new school began in 2010 and its first pupils were welcomed in September. Brighton College AbuDhabi has been designed to the highest specification. The classrooms cater for small classes with the latest technology on hand to assist teaching. The school has some of the best sporting facilities in the city, and boasts a music department of the highest of standards. The drama department contains an auditorium that can cater for an audience 500, where the first production is expected before Christmas. New Home for Brighton College BursaryAs part of plans to increase classroom space at the College, the Development Office has moved down the road to the Old Post Office on College Road. Now refurbished as high-quality office space and opened by the Brighton College Finance Committee Chairman, Geoffrey Miller, the Bursary consists of the main administrative support services for the school including Development and Alumni, Finance, HR, Brighton College Services and Health and Safety.

Bigger and Better Facilities for Pre-PrepAfter a summer of hard work, the Brighton College Pre-Prep School was officially opened last month by Lord Skidelsky, Chairman of the College Governors. Previously Roedean Junior School, the building was refurbished over the summer holidays and transformed in to a fantastic new facility for pupils aged 3-7.

England Wicket-Keeper Opens New Fitness CentreWho better than England cricket legend and OB, Matt Prior, to open the new College Fitness Suite in the former Pre-Prep Hall? Joined by staff, governors and supporters of the project, Matt formally opened the facility and tried out some of the machines. The suite, consisting of state-of-

the-art resistance and cardiovascular equipment, will be invaluable to pupils of the College. We are extremely grateful to the family of Arnold Kwok (A. 2008 – 10) and one anonymous supporter for their donations towards this outstanding facility.

Planning Permission Granted for Diamond Jubilee PavilionWe are delighted that planning permission has now been granted for the Diamond Jubilee Pavilion to be built on the New Ground in East Brighton Park. We are currently in the process of selecting a contractor and building will begin as soon as the necessary funds have been secured; with £600,000 of the £700,000 target already raised or pledged, we are very nearly there! The one-storey building will have large changing rooms, a stunning café-bar overlooking the New Ground and an impressive entrance foyer, providing a warm and welcoming environment for pupils, staff and spectators. Other groups are also set to benefit as the new facilities will also be made available to sporting groups from around the community. There were very few changes made to the originally-submitted plans. One improvement to the design will see a change to the finish on the roof; instead of an aluminium roof, the Pavilion will have bio-diverse sedum roof. This will be a beautiful feature, perfectly complementing its setting at the foot of the South Downs.

Over the last year, we have had some very successful fundraising events, such as a Golf Day in aid of the campaign, which have helped us draw even closer to our fundraising targets.

If you have been thinking about making a gift to support the Pavilion, please do so now so that we can begin building as soon as possible. If we can be on site in early 2012, the building could be complete and ready for use for the summer term of 2012. For a donation of £1,000 (which can be paid in small monthly instalments), you will become a Friend of the Pavilion and be permanently recognised on a donor board in the new building. More details of the project can be found on our website at www.brightoncollege.org.uk/senior-development.asp, together with a facility to donate online.

Thank you very much to our current donors to the Diamond Jubilee Pavilion, whose generosity we are happy to acknowledge here. We are very grateful for your support in helping to transform the New Ground in to an area of which we can all be proud.

The Simon Smith Building

The London Academy of Excellence

The Lent term will see the opening of the new Simon Smith Building in the Woolton Quad. The building will provide resources for the whole school, including a new health centre and the chaplaincy. A large social space which will include an internet café will be especially valuable for the boarding community, providing a place for boys and girls from all houses to meet in the evening. In addition to the internal space, the

outdoor area will be improved to incorporate outdoor seating and a performance area. We look forward to this wonderful resource being available in January 2012.

As announced at Speech Day, the building will be named after the College’s former Second Master, Simon Smith, paying tribute to the 38 years that he taught at the school.

The London Academy of Excellence received the go-ahead from the Department for Education on 20th October. It is the first sixth form free school in Britain to have the government’s approval. Brighton and its seven partner schools, each of whom will sponsor a subject, are putting together plans for the curriculum and organisation. To some extent it marks a development of the highly success partnership with Kingsford Community school, and will offer a first class education for hundreds of gifted and talented pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. The 150 East London-based students in its first cohort (it will eventually be 400) will be studying A levels from a select list of 12 subjects in order to gain a place at a top university. This is in response to the Russell Group universities’

complaint that fewer and fewer students from the poorest backgrounds are applying to them. Open events for students and families are to be held at HSBC’s offices at Canary Wharf in December and January. The LAE will be government-funded, but further sponsorship is being sought from private and corporate donors.

College Master PlanThe relocation of the Pre-Prep School to the former Roedean Junior School, has presented us with new opportunities to plan the future development of the College site. The need for increased and updated science laboratories, a larger swimming pool and a modern theatre space are all part of a brief for a revised Master Plan for the College. Piers Gough, Partner at C2WG Architects, has been commissioned to produce a plan to provide these new facilities for a growing school.

Piers is no stranger to the College, being the son of the late Peter Gough, Physics teacher and Housemaster at the College from 1946-66, and producer of many acclaimed dramatic productions. The Goughs lived in a flat on the College campus, and Piers was born in Bighton and spent his childhood here.

Music SchoolPreparatory work continues in the lead up to our next major development project, the Music School. Revised plans include a link to a new drama school, which we will build as a future development. This will create a performance hub at the centre of the College, with music, dance and drama all making use of greatly improved practice and performance facilities. A series of events in support of the project will commence in Summer 2012, and in the meantime, parents and OBs will be invited to view our plans as the project progresses.

Archives OnlineWith the College archives forever growing, and demand for access to historic material increasing, we plan to make much of the collection available online. Accessed via the OB website, the facility will allow registered users to view, add, search and tag a whole range of sources from our archives, including photographs, documents, sound-bites and videos. The plans to digitise the archives are dependent, however, on securing funding for the project through donations and sponsorship. If you, or your organisation, would be interested in supporting this exciting project, please contact Scott Sheridan at [email protected] or by calling (01273) 704226. In the meantime, we still encourage you all to carry on sending in your interesting sources to us by hand, post or by email to [email protected].

Special Guest at Remembrance Service

Brighton Day a Sunny Success

Business Networks

Remembrance is always an emotional time for many Brightonians, none more so than Wallace Burnet-Smith (Hampden/Leconfield 1936-40), a WWII fighter pilot, who was invited back to the College, together with his wife Jean, as Hampden’s Guest of Honour at their special assembly in Chapel. Readings and war time songs made for a very moving event and the occasion was marked by the boys handing over a cheque for £400 raised for St. Dunstan’s, the Brighton-

based ex. Service men and womens charity, of which Mr Burnet-Smith and his wife are both members. After the assembly Wallace and Jean were treated to tea in the Café de Paris, where there was plenty of opportunity to hear some wartime tales and to wish them well for the RAF veterans march-past at the Cenotaph. The visit was a privilege for all who were lucky enough to meet them.

A beautiful late summer’s day was enjoyed by all on Saturday 3rd September, as we gathered together for the Peter Rumney Memorial Rugby Match, an OB Netball Match, tours of the school by Prefects for Old Brightonians and a delightful barbeque to the sounds of the College Swing Band. Many of our 2011 leavers joined us, before they headed off for their first year at university, and a delightful mix of all age groups of OBs with their families enjoyed the day up on the Home Ground in the sunshine.

This year has seen the launch of a series of business network events for Old Brightonians, the first of which was held in the city for City & Finance, and a second in Mayfair for OB Property. The events are a great opportunity to network with members of the Brighton College community that work in your sector. Both events will be repeated in the Spring, in London and in Brighton. For further details please see the OB website.

Old Brightonians of the MonthEvery month the Old Brightonians website and the e-newsletter feature an Old Brightonian of the month. Launched in March 2011 so far this has included Roger Simons (C. 1980-85), Clare Connor (W. 1989-94), Nicholas Allan (H. 1970-75), David Gold (S. 1986-91), Sir John Chilcot (H/S. 1952-57), Gabrielle Ryan (W. 2001-03), Duncan Watts (JS 1974-79, R 1979-84), Dave Clark (H 1982-85), Marc Heal (L. 1994-98), and Neville Abraham (B. 1950-55).

If you would like to nominate someone please do contact the OB office, or to see the answers in full visit the Old Brightonians website at www.oldbrightonians.com

Here are some of our favourite excerpts from their answers:

How would you like to be remembered?

“As someone highly focused but also very caring. My favourite quote that I think sums this balance up is ‘Be breathtaking in the performances you deliver; be breathgiving in the difference you make’.” Clare Connor (W. 1989-94)

“As someone who didn’t care what other people thought of me, but cared deeply about the people and issues I was passionate about.” Roger Simons (C. 1980-85),

“To be remembered as a really good squash player – which I never was, but good enough to get me off the cross-country squad in the Spring term.” Sir John Chilcot (H/S. 1952-57)

What was the best piece of advice you were given?

“The best bit of advice was from my art teacher. He said, looking at my work, ‘I wish I could get you to drink a glass of whiskey’.” Nicholas Allan (H. 1970-75)

“Always learn from your mistakes, never waste time on regrets.” David Gold (S. 1986-91)

“The best advice I received was ‘try your best at things you’re not good at’. So, Third Fifteen and Third Eleven.” Sir John Chilcot (H/S. 1952-57)

“ ‘What you can do, or dream you can do, begin it; boldness has genius, power and magic in it’. It’s a butchered Goethe quote.” Duncan Watts (JS 1974-79, R 1979-84)

“Every morning when I arrived at school I would see Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If” at the bottom of the stairs to Hampden. The first line about ‘keeping your head when all about you are losing theirs’ is definitely something that goes through my head a lot when on operations.” Marc Heal (L. 1994-98)

“If you get a job you love, it won’t feel like work.” Gabrielle Ryan (W. 2001-03)

“If you concentrate on the basics, the runs will come’ Very useful if you opened the batting for the 1st XI, as I did, but equally appropriate for novice entrepreneurs today.” Neville Abraham (B. 1950-55)

What is your best memory of school?

“Discovering Gustav Holst’s The Planet Suite in a lesson held by the Head of RE, and my Chemistry teacher (Mr Prideaux) loaning me a small mixer over a school holiday so I could experiment with music.” Dave Clarke (H 1982-85)

The 1845 SocietyMembership of the 1845 Society, named after the year in which the College was founded, is open to all those who have pledged a legacy gift to Brighton College. The purpose of the Society is to encourage legacy giving and to give the College the opportunity to honour and thank legacy givers in their lifetime, and to maintain their connection with the school in perpetuity. Members of the 1845 Society are invited to attend an annual lunch at the College, to meet fellow legacy pledgers and to keep up to date with College developments and plans. For more information on the 1845 Society or to discuss a legacy gift, please contact Debra Chalmers, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, at [email protected], telephone 01273 704234.

HymnalsA new edition of the College Hymnal is currently being finalised. Thanks to two generous donations, one from Mr John Davison (C. 1950-55) in memory of his late mother, and the other from Philip Mitchell (H. 1960-65), we hope to have the new publication produced by the end of the Lent Term.

Leavers AppealOur sincere thanks go to parents of 2011 leavers who opted to donate their deposits to the College for future developments, enabling us to continue making a real difference to children’s education. These donations have been extremely valuable, funding the new piano in the Music Recital Room, and several other projects in houses and departments throughout the school.

Scholars Off to a Great Start

Stuck on You

Only one term in, already our Foundation Scholars are flourishing at Brighton College. Our Foundation Scholarship programme enables gifted and talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to study in the Brighton College Sixth Form.

Beginning with the Kingsford Scholarship Programme in 2007, supporting young people from Kingsford Community College, the Foundation Scholarship Scheme has allowed us to extend this support to pupils from local schools thanks to the support of parents, OBs and HSBC.

Our first two Foundation Scholars, Radi Darwish and Al-Amin Miah, from Patcham High School, have had a great start to the academic year.

Radi has settled extremely well into College life, quickly making friends in Durnford and taking

a full part in house events as well as a range of extra-curricular activities. He is enjoying a challenging academic diet of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, and his teachers are impressed with his assured start to all the A level courses.

Al Amin is enjoying his AS level studies, preparing conscientiously for modular examinations in January in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and German. He has settled very well in to Hampden House and enjoys many extra-curricular opportunities, particularly Young Enterprise and the Entrepreneurship programme.

To donate to the Foundation Scholarship fund, please contact Debra Chalmers, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, at [email protected], telephone 01273 704234.

Brighton College has teamed up with Stuck on You, supplier of personalised name labels, who will donate a proportion of all sales to Brighton College projects.

Stuck on You is famous worldwide for labels that stay stuck. Their iron-on clothing labels only take 15 seconds to apply, embedding into the weave of the fabric to ensure they stay put in hot washes and the tumble dryer over and over again. A huge array of colours and designs are available throughout the clothing label range, and personalised stickers in an assortment of sizes are perfect for naming folders, sports equipment and calculators. They are microwave and dishwasher safe too, so are great for lunchboxes and water bottles, with plenty more ideas online.

Orders can be placed online, with deliveries made direct to your door, through our dedicated website: www.stuckonyou.biz/brightoncollege
