HORACE MANN EDUCATOR Horace Mann...ALL IN, ALL THE TIME!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

This month’s classroom social development lessons will focus on

building a habit of Putting First Things First: Work First, Then

Play. If we think for a minute or two, we surely can find exam-

ples of this idea in our adult lives:

“After I finish writing these thank you notes, I’ll have a cup of my

favorite hot tea.”

“Before I sit on the couch to watch a TV show, I’d better get

through today’s emails.”

“When I’ve saved enough money, I’ll take a vacation!”

In the field of psychology, this is called the Premack Principle. It

states that rewards can be used to encourage us to complete the

things we aren’t as excited about. In addition to the practical out-

come that something important will be done, there are some neat

side effects from doing the hard thing first, aren’t there? For ex-

ample, energy isn’t being wasted worrying about the work. Fur-

thermore, the confidence that comes with developing this self-

discipline will help in all areas of life.

“Welcome Back! Hope you had a great Winter Break!

December was a fun month for the PTA! We held our Annual PTA Holiday Gathering at Around the Corner. With about 30 people in attendance, it was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to gather with friends and celebrate.

The PTA was busy spreading holiday cheer with several events throughout December. The Teacher Cookie Walk was a big success -- the table in the 2nd floor conference room was loaded with sweet treats for the teachers and staff to take home to their loved ones. Thank you to everyone who contributed and to Laura George who coordi-nated this successful event. Many of our PTA volunteers gathered to decorate the gym for the Winter Program, creating a lovely backdrop for an excellent vocal and in-strumental program. Special thanks to Amy Lardi, Katie Steinmuller, Geeta Lopez, Debbie Baker, Monique Smith, Amanda Whaples, Kristy Gibbons, and JoAnne Mahmoud for their amazing help!

In the midst of all the holiday fun, the Board of Education shipped more than 25 books to be used in our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms. Our PTA volunteers who spent many hours assigning reading levels to each book included in the shipment. In one day, the books were all ready to go to the classrooms. Thank you to our volun-teers for their quick and tireless work!

We are already planning for next school year and gathering names for PTA Officer and Chair positions. If you are interested in one of the positions, would like to nomi-nate someone, or would like to help with the elections process, please contact Kristy Gibbons at [email protected] as soon as possible. It's a great way to get in-volved in school and meet other parents!

Our next meeting is on January 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. Lakewood's H2O volunteer group and an adult supervisor will provide babysitters for the meeting to keep the kids busy. If you have not already sent in your PTA membership, please do! Your involvement and support help us continue to host fun, educational events as well as support the work of our teachers. Even if you can't make the PTA meetings, join. There are many ways to be involved!

THE IDEAL ARRIVAL TIME at school is 8:45.

When dropping off your child in the morning,

please use the lane next to the sidewalk. If

you need to leave or get out of your car dur-

ing drop-off, please park in a parking space

as a courtesy to other drivers.

WINTER SAFETY………..Winter is here and this

is a good time to review our winter safety

rules. Students are to walk, on the side-

walks, since icy spots are often invisible. One

of the ways we are Safe at Horace Mann is to

leave nature on the ground. Please re-inforce

this idea by reminding your child to leave the

snow on the ground.

RECESS………Be sure to send your child with

appropriate clothing for outdoor recess as

we experience cold winter weather. Stu-

dents will go outside unless the temperature

and/or wind chill is too low, or the level of

moisture is too high. Hats and gloves are

necessary for the days we are outside. If

weather does not permit an outdoor recess,

students stay indoors with supervised activi-

ties. The decision to go outside is made on a

daily basis. If your child needs cold weather

clothing, please contact the office.

ATTENDANCE LINE…….When you call the school

office to let us know that your child will miss school due

to illness, please be sure to use our ATTENDANCE

PHONE NUMBER – 529-4307. This line can be used 24

hours a day, so you can call at any time, day or night, to

leave your message. The recording will ask you to leave

your child’s name (please spell the last name), your

child’s grade and teacher, your name, and a brief reason

for the absence. This will allow the school secretary to

take care of our students, respond to the door buzzer,

and answer other phone calls that can only be made on

the regular office phone number. We appreciate your

use of the absence line phone number in the future.

Thank you in advance for your help in keeping our regu-

lar phone line available.

As an annual notice, we are informing families of the

Lakewood Schools Threat Policy……..

….No report of, rumor of, or threat of weapons in the

Lakewood Schools shall be ignored. No threat or rumor

of pending violence shall be ignored, whether made to a

student or a faculty member. Such threats or rumors

shall be immediately reported to the Lakewood Police.

The student may be kept in school until the police arrive

to investigate the incident. At the discretion of the police,

the student may be transported to the police department

where proper disposition of the incident will be deter-

mined. It is the policy of the Lakewood Police, in cooper-

ation with school authorities, to appropriately respond to

and investigate all such incidents.

Please be sure to look there if an

article of clothing or other per-

sonal item belonging to your stu-

dent has gone missing.

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

With your help, school can be a healthy place for all. In order to prevent the spread of illness to others, it is suggested that your child stay home for 24 hours from the onset of:

● Vomiting

● Diarrhea (three or more watery bowel movements in a 24 hour period)

● Fever (temperature over 100.4°)

f your child is ill before school, keep him/her at home until your child is symptom free for at least 24 hours.

These guidelines are suggested for the good of all students. A child who returns to school before being completely well runs a risk of infecting others. Exposure to common illnesses could be life threatening to immunocompromised students.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, a physician must evaluate a suspected communicable disease:

● Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye)

● Staphylococcus infections (impetigo, MRSA)

● Streptococcal infections (strep throat)

Tinea (ringworm)

If prescribed, your child must complete at least 24 hours of appropriate prescription therapy prior to returning to school. A phy-sician's note must be provided for reentry to school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Kids Love Musicals!

Students in grades K-3 will participate in a musical theater “workshop”

beginning at the end of January! Kids Love Musicals is an artist-in-

residence program which uses classic fairy tale musicals to explore the

art form of musical theater and encourage students to exercise their im-

agination, creativity, and reasoning skills. With a visiting teaching artist,

students learn songs and dances, act out key scenes from the musicals,

and explore the classic American musicals of Cinderella or Jungle Book. K-3 students will participate dur-

ing Music classes from January 30—February 2. Kids Love Musicals is an engagingly interactive workshop,

rather than a performance. Every student has a part and everyone is a star! Many thanks to the PTA for

sponsoring Kids Love Musicals!

We are also proud to share that for our school is partnering with The Musical Theater Project again this

year for a special, inclusive program. Adapted Kids Love Musicals is a modified workshop tailored to the

students with moderate-intensive special needs (such as students in the CHAMPS program). The dates for

this year’s sessions are on Mondays and Tuesdays from February 6—February 28.
