Tulip was taken in by her aunt, Addie. She is a cook. They were all each other had. Later in her life, Tulip changed her name to Hope.

Hope has always wanted to meet her Dad. Her mom visits her sometimes, but Hope has always been mad at her mom for abandoning her.

Addie and Hope move from diner to diner. When Hope is 16, Addie and her moved to Mulhoney, Wisconsin. They start another new life working at a diner called the Welcome Stairways. Hope as the waitress and Addie as the cook.

The owner of the restaurant is G.T. He is a very

kind man with a lot of problems. He is suffering

from Leukemia. He decides to run for mayor to

help beat Millstone, the town’s corrupt, lying

mayor.

Hope and Addie decide to help G.T. along with the other workers at The Welcome Stairways. G.T. has helped them all. Hope and the campaign crew work to help the right choice for Mulhoney become mayor.

Braverman becomes one of Hope’s friends. He has problems as well. He has to stay home from college to help his family. Hope and him become VERY close by the end of the book.

Lou Ellen is a waitress. She has a new baby named Anastasia. She has a birth deffect that stunts her growth. GT helps Lou Ellen and lets Anastasia stay in his house.

GT’s competitor, Millstone, is a corrupt liar. He lets the dairy, the largest company in town, not pay taxes. Millstone has been lying to the people of Mulhoney for a while now. GT wants to see a change. Millstone has competitors that have tried to cheat and even paid someone to put a mouse in a meal at The Welcome Stairways.
