2013 Annual

Meeting Summary Hope held its annual meeting on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Pastor Blake Rohrer from the Synod Office provided the message at both services; he also brought greetings from the Synod Office at our An-nual Meeting. Minutes from the January 15, 2012 An-nual Meeting were approved as written. Elections were held and the results are as follows: Steve Hahn (President), Donna Borchert (Secretary), Rita Sawatzky (Adult Ministry), Diana Tonn (Faith-in-Action Ministry), and Nelson Wendricks (Worship, completing 1 year left from Steve Hahn), Dick Lande (Endowment), Barb Johnson & Doris Marks (delegates to Skaalen Home’s annual meeting), Mary Ackerman & Pam St. John (delegates to Oakwood’s annual meeting), Carol Wendricks & Jean Hanson (Ecumenical Housing). Two delegates to the Synod Convention (May 4 and 5) are still needed (Pastor Chris is also a delegate). If you are interested, see Steve Hahn. Thanks and appreciation were ex-pressed to retiring council members: Carol Duffy (President), Tim Awes (Adult), Linda Marks (Faith-in-Action), and Mary Ackerman (HLCW). Old business included a recommendation regarding the Endow-ment Committee funds being used for Lutheran Col-lege Scholarships for members. Since the Endow-ment Fund currently does not have the authority to make this type of disbursement and would require a change in the Endowment Committee Bylaws, after discussion a motion was made, seconded and ap-proved to remove this item from the table. Lastly, the 2013 budget of $234,246.78 was approved.

Come to the Seder... Palm Sunday, March 24, 2013

5:00-7:00 pm in Neemann Hall

Seder is a Hebrew word meaning order - Seder Meal order of the meal which marks the beginning of the Jewish Festival Passover. In historic Seder recalls the history of the rescue of the People of God from Egypt by the Lord’s Passover. God told Moses that the Israelites were to slaughter a lamb and mark their door with its blood. He would smite the first born of the Egyptians but seeing the blood of the lamb on the Israel-ites door, the angel of death would pass over their houses. God also commanded them to observe a feast to the Lord throughout their generations. Every spring the exodus from Egypt is commemorated by celebrating Passover, because God passed over the houses of the Jews. The Seder Meal is a serious, reflective, joyful and fes-tive occasion. It symbolizes the lamb, unleavened bread and wine that our Messiah is revealed to us. There is much evi-dence that Jesus was celebrating the Seder with his disciples at the time of the Last Supper. In the coming weeks, watch for an insert in your Sun-day bulletin to reserve your place at the Seder Meal. The cost for adults is $7.50 and children 12 and under is $3.75 Reservations will be limited to 100, due to preparation of two meals, the tradition Seder meal of lamb, matzah, haroset and wine and a family style meal of chicken, stuff-ing, vegetables and lamb cake for dessert. If you have any questions or would like to help out with the Seder Meal, please contact Craig Shaffer, Linda Marks or Diana Tonn

CIRCLE

The eternal light for 2013 is given by Ruth Wiric in memory of her mother & father, Sophie & John Hoppmann.

March & April are the months for assembling HOSPICE/AIDS KITS & NEWBORN KITS. There will be a list of items needed in the Sunday bulle-tins and in Neemann Hall. Please keep the insert with you when you go shopping and maybe you can pick up an item or two. As always, they can be placed in containers in Nee-mann Hall. After these Kits are assembled they will be sent to the Synod Convention with Pastor Chris or delegates who will be attending. Please take time to check the lists and give prayerful consideration on items you may be willing to do-nate. Thank you for willingness to donate to these urgently needed causes for Global Health Ministries.

THINK GREEN! THINK SPRING!

THINK AMERICA’S BEST FLOWERS! Are you dreaming of sunny skies, warm breezes, and lush gardens? Faith-in-Action Ministry can help you get a jump on the up- coming gardening season. We will be taking orders through Sunday, March 24 to purchase gift certificates to America’s Best Garden Center. In return, 25% of your purchase goes di-rectly back to Hope Lutheran to help with Faith-in-Action ministry outreach projects. This year our funds will be go-ing to Lutheran School Associations of New York to help schools and families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Certifi-cates will come in various denominations. You can give them as gifts (Mother’s Day, Teacher Appreciation, anni-versaries and weddings), or use them yourself for all your

spring gardening and landscaping needs. America's Best Flowers Garden Cen-ter is a full service garden center with a state-of-the-art greenhouse over 83,000 sq. ft. - one of the largest in Dane County. The cer-tificates are good at the main location in Cot-

tage Grove April-September, and can be used at the satellite locations May-August and THEY NEVER EXPIRE. To learn more, go to www.americasbestflowers.com. We’ll be selling the gift cards between services, in the Neemann Hall from February 24th to March 24th. Forms will be available to fill out, and make checks payable to Hope Lutheran Church . Additional forms may be picked up so you can pass them out to family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Final orders will be due Sunday, March 24th. You will be able to pick up your certificates in the nar-thex between services on Sunday, April 7 or in the church office after that time. In this season of Lent, our congregation joins Lutheran World Relief and Lutherans all over the United States in prayer and service on behalf of some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Lutheran World Relief Quilts and Kits reach people coping with war, disaster, disease, poverty. The needs around the world continue to grow. This year, LWR is already committed to sending Quilts and Kits to vulnerable people in Haiti, Tanzania, Liberia, Angola, Armenia and India. This Lent, we will work to help meet these needs all around the world and offer gifts of God’s sacrificial grace and love. Our

congregation is participating in the Baskets of Promise

project this season. Check out the bulletins for a list of what we will be collecting. There are also lists in Neemann Hall for your convenience. Put your faith into action on your Lenten journey this year!

THE VISITOR 9

Rahmat Deni Mardias remembers September 30, 2009, very well. That’s the day a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck his village of Padang Pariaman in West Sumatra, Indonesia. “The earthquake destroyed my house and everything inside it. For four days, my family and I had to stay in my grandfather’s house, says the 11-year-old sixth grader. The next day there was a 6.2 magnitude aftershock. The two earthquakes claimed 1,120 lives, toppled buildings, caused landslides and left and estimated 1.2 million affected people to cope in the aftermath. For Rahmat, the earthquake not only destroyed his home, but also his school and many of the supplies he needed for his education. “When the situation was calmer,” he says, “we returned to our house to try to find anything we could use. We lost everything, including my school uniform and all my study equipment. I had to go to school in my (pajamas).” In the wake of this disaster, LWR and its local partner are helping children recover from this disaster. To date, LWR has helped feed nearly 400 school students through supplementary food programs and distributed multi-vitamin supplements to 500 children and infants. LWR constructed five temporary schools and distributed School Kits and uniforms to more than 300 children. Being able to return to his studies has made life a lot more manageable for Rahmat, who says, “Now I feel happy going to school just like before the earthquake.”
