Backbone of Hope

from Pastor Sandy . . .

Dear Friends,

You don’t need me to tell you -- these are incredibly

challenging days to be Christ’s Church! Two pandemics are

boiling over in our world – Covid 19 and racism. Both

operate silently, both are often unseen and both are spread

under cover of darkness until their deadly power is

unleashed. Both have life and death consequences and

both call us to rethink every aspect of our life together. One

we’ve only been aware of for less than 6 months while the

other has been in our midst for centuries, ignored and even

perpetuated by people of faith – people who say we

believe that ALL of us have been created in God’s image

and likeness, but do not always live that way. God forgive

us.

In the Old Testament God sent prophets to confront the

people when they lost their way. In Micah 6:8 the prophet

says, “what does the LORD require of you, O mortal … but

that you do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our

God.”

The biblical concept of “doing justice” has to do with

making sure all people are treated as beloved children of

God, treated with respect and dignity. As people of God it

is our calling, our duty, our responsibility to oppose injustice

wherever it may be found, especially in examining our own

hearts.

It can be tempting to assign blame for racism and injustice

to others. It’s easy to say it’s “their” fault, with “them”

being the African American community, the police, the

liberal or conservative media, or others we’d like to

scapegoat. The truth is that we have a huge problem in our

country. We’re divided. We have some who live with great

privilege while others live in fear. Being black in America

should not be a death sentence. God forgive us.

In 1967 Martin Luther King Jr. said “Darkness cannot drive

out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out

hate, only love can do that.” 53 years later, that is still true.

So, what does the LORD require of us? It is not enough to be

quietly non-racist. Now is the time to be vocally ANTI-racist.

Now is not the time to cast blame or point fingers. Now IS the

time to pray fervently, to listen attentively, to learn from those

who are suffering and in pain. Now IS the time to act in new

ways, to be instruments of healing and reconciliation. Now IS

the time to reach out in love and to work tirelessly for justice

and equality for all. It’s a matter of life and death.

Together with you, in God’s Gracious Grip,

Pastor Sandy

Let's Learn Together !!

Join Us June 7 for Hope Cafe (4 pm Sundays via Zoom)

and/or New Book Study of Dear Church

starting mid June

At the May 31 Hope Cafe on Zoom we

discussed recent events and agreed we

wanted to continue the discussion at

Hope Cafe the following week, 4 pm

June 7. All are welcome to join us.

We also learned about the book Dear Church: A Love Letter

From a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US

by Lenny Duncan. It is available at Barnes and Noble and

Amazon. A new book study/discussion of the book will begin in

mid June (separate from Hope Café). If you would like to be

part of that book study, email [email protected] and

we’ll figure out day/time to meet via Zoom. All who are

seeking a deeper understanding are invited to join in.

If you plan to read the book, please pray to be open to the

new perspectives and insight God may bring. While this book

may make you uncomfortable, this is often the place where

God teaches us the most. When we are uncertain and trying

to understand that which we haven’t previously encountered,

there is growth and renewal. We are called to be church

together and sometimes that means untangling difficult

issues . . . together with God.
