Gardner-Webb annually plays some of the nation’s top competition, tackling major conference foes on a regular basis. This season, GWU will battle three of ESPN.com’s preseason top-8 teams before January – taking road trips to defending national champion North Carolina along with Texas and Duke. GWU will also tangle with Penn State (Big Ten) and Charlotte (Conference USA) in 2009-2010.

Gardner-Webb basketball is well known, and its success over the years has drawn major media attention – on a local, regional and national level. Gardner-Webb’s upset of No. 20 Kentucky gar-nered original stories in the New York Times, USAToday and the Los Angeles Times, along with other notable publications around the coun-try in November, 2007. Four Gardner-Webb games appeared on the ESPN family of networks in 2007-2008, including a pair of high defi nition broadcasts on ESPN2 during the championship rounds of the 2K Sports College Hoops Challenge in New York – with Dick Vitale and Dan Shulman (above left) calling the games. GWU will play seven games on live television in 2009-2010 – including a matchup at Duke on ESPN2 (December 15).

Gardner-Webb student support is strong, with the driving force on campus – “The Dawg Pound” – reporting record enrollment heading into the 2009-2010 season. Since joining the Division I ranks in 2000, GWU has been among its league leaders in attendance – leading the Atlantic Sun Conference during its run to the regular season title in 2004-2005.

Page 7: hoopsguide10

Gardner-Webb players don’t limit their excellence to the court. Since moving to the Division I level in 2000, GWU has seen over 90 percent of its play-ers graduate, and reguarly posts a team semester GPA above 3.00. Former Runnin’ Bulldog standout Aaron Linn (above right) earned ESPN the Maga-zine fi rst-team Academic All-America honors in 2008-2009, and was also named Big South Confer-ence Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Thomas Sand-ers (above left), the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, was also an ESPN the Maga-zine Academic All-District III choice that same season. Current senior center Auryn MacMillan (lower right) has a chance to earn similar honors in 2009-2010.

Gardner-Webb basketball has a strong tradition of producing All-Americans on the hardwood. Thom-as Sanders (right) was named honorable mention All-America in 2008. Center Artis Gilmore (left) was a two-time All-America at Gardner-Webb.

Built in 1983, and renovated in 2008, Paul Porter Arena is located inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center on campus in Boiling Springs. A new locker room, fi lm room and player lounge were completed in 2007 (opposite page), and a new court design (pictured above) was installed prior to the start of the 2008-2009 season. Gardner-Webb holds a tremendous home court advantage, with crowds annually among the conference’s best – and student support always high. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are 16-8 over the last two seasons at home.

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his fifth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006.

Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987.

A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005.

After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presi-dential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified can-didate right here at the university.”

Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank

Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005.

Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission.

He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum.

Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 13th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 28th year in athletics administration.

The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU's move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008.

Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic pro-grams, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facili-ties and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men's swimming, was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for contin-ued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.

GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch's arrival, and the department has

posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years.

Gardner-Webb's final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs' student-athletes.

GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men's and women's combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy.

Gardner-Webb's men's soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifi-ers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007.

Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984).

After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University; Danielle, a sophomore soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (15).

Senior Woman Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 30th year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program's suc-cess. Scruggs has served as Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scruggs provides

the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day opera-tions and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Bulldog athletics. Scruggs was recently inducted into the Gardner-Webb athletics Hall of Fame for her meritorious service to the program.

Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie.

Stephen Dolan is in his second year as Gardner-Webb University's Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance, having joined the Bulldog staff in May, 2008.

Dolan will oversee all aspects of Gardner-Webb's Compliance Office, including eligibility, ongoing education and compliance with NCAA rules and regulations and the supervision of GWU's compliance staff.

The Raleigh, N.C., native came to GWU after serving in the Compliance Office at NC State since 2005. Dolan held three posts during his time with the Wolfpack, serving as an intern, graduate assistant and Interim Compliance Coordinator during the winter of 2007-2008. Dolan also has experience in the Colonial Athletic Association, having completed a summer internship in the Compliance Office at UNC Wilmington in 2005. He graduated from NC State with a Bachelor of Science in 2006 and completed a Master's Degree at NC State in 2008. Both degrees were earned in the major of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management with an emphasis in Sports Management. Dolan and his wife, Abby, currently reside in Gastonia, N.C.

Mike Roebuck is in his ninth season as Gardner-Webb University’s Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services and has made a positive impact in the area since assuming his current role.

Over the past five seasons (2002-2004), 25 GWU student-athletes have been named CoSIDA Academic All-District III at the NCAA Division I level and six have earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors (Taylor Simpson (2), Rachael Riopel, LeeAnna Woodworth, Todd Ulrich and Aaron Linn). Numerous

teams have earned national and regional honors for their cumulative success in the classroom during that same span, and Gardner-Webb captured its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic All-Sports Championship in 2007.

In each of the past two seasons, Gardner-Webb athletics has forged a combined department GPA of more than 3.0, and saw three student-athletes – Aaron Linn (men's basketball), Katie Garahan (women's golf) and Jon Ahearn (baseball) earn Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports in 2008-2009. Ahearn was given the league's post-graduate fellowship as well following the season.

Roebuck served six years as the school’s Director of Financial Planning before joining the athletic department. The 1972 graduate of Wofford (S.C.) College is also a former student-athlete who played football and ran track for the Terriers from 1967-72.

As Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic Services, the Shelby, N.C., native assists the Faculty Athletics Representative and Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance in determining academic eligibility while developing and implementing programs that encourage academic success and improve the graduation rate of Gardner-Webb student-athletes.

Perhaps there is no greater time to observe the academic quality of Gardner-Webb University than right now. All of the necessary factors for academic excel-lence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, and many boast of well-documented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number nearly 4,000, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private institution in North Carolina. New technological features in our library enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursu-ing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic confer-ence is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Direc-tor Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s fi rst Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the addi-tions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earn-ing at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its fi rst automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifi er to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leader-ship, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its fi rst-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the fi nest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has en-joyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the fi rst time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its fi rst long-range strategic plan, re-affi rming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidifi ed Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its fi rst live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annu-ally through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & fi eld, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the fi rst men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution fi nish fi fth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team fi nish in an NCAA event. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Con-ference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League his-tory from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s fi rst 25 years. The Conference’s on-fi eld accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

Rick Scruggs (369-312, 191-197 at GWU) is in his 15th season as the Runnin’ Bulldogs head coach, and has his Runnin’ Bulldogs fi rmly established as one of the fast rising mid-major programs in college bas-ketball. Scruggs has di-rected the ‘Dogs to a .500 or better record three times in the past fi ve seasons, including an 18-12 mark in 2004-2005, a 17-12 mark in 2005-2006 and a 16-16 record in 2007-2008 - all against brutal schedules that featured a steady diet

of college basketball heavyweights. GWU fi nished 9-9 in league play during its fi rst run through the Big South Conference, forging a 13-17 overall record against a brutal sched-ule. Aaron Linn earned All-Big South honors, in addition to Academic All-America honors, Josh Henley was named to the league’s All-Freshman Team, and Grayson Flittner earned NABC All-District honors. The Runnin’ Bulldogs rode the scoring prowess and rebounding energy of senior Thomas Sanders in 2007-2008, as the Sugarland, Texas, native earned A-Sun Player of the Year and Associated Press honorable mention All-America honors after posting 18.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Sanders wasn’t alone in gathering hardware, as Nate Blank earned freshman mid-major All-America honors from two outlets, and was named A-Sun Freshman of the Year. Gardner-Webb, and Scruggs, found the national spotlight in early November, shocking No. 20 Ken-tucky in Rupp Arena by a decisive 84-68 margin - setting of a wild cel-ebration on campus that drew the attention of every major sports out-let in the nation. That night’s hero, sophomore Grayson Flittner, con-tinued to shine well after his Rupp Arena magic, going on to smash Gardner-Webb’s single-season record for three-point makes with 107 - and averaging more than 15 points per game. When the smoke cleared, Scruggs had guided a very young basketball team to a 16-16 overall record and the Atlantic Sun Conference semifi nals for the third time in four seasons in the league.

GWU averaged a strong 77.0 points per game, knocked down 269 three-point baskets and had four players - Sanders, Flittner, Blank and junior Aaron Linn - average more than 10 points per game. GWU, a fast-paced team with a penchant for the fast break, netted at least 80 points in 16 different games. In 2006-2007, GWU faced a rebuilding year with 11 newcomers and one of the nation’s youngest rosters - and a non-conference schedule that featured top-5 programs North Carolina and Wisconsin. Lone senior Chris Gash earned All-Conference honors and helped keep the ‘Dogs competitive. Of the team’s 12 league losses, four came by three points or less - including a pair to regular season champion ETSU. A credit to Scruggs’ patience, GWU improved over the course of the season, winning more than half of their games in the season’s final 12 games. In 2005-2006, Gardner-Webb produced its second strong season in a row. A narrow, 83-80, loss at the buzzer against eventual top-10 team North Carolina – the defending national champions from the previous year – started the season and Scruggs’ squad followed that effort with a second win in as many years over C-USA member East Carolina. Two games later, a landmark win occurred, as GWU stunned Big Ten foe and eventual NIT participant Minnesota on the Gophers’ home floor, sending shockwaves through Division I college basketball. A fourth-place finish in the A-Sun after a slow start included a school-record for league road wins, including one at powerful ETSU in

Page 35: hoopsguide10

33

February. Two wins over NCAA Tournament participant Belmont in the regular season proved crucial to a late season charge by GWU, and the ‘Dogs followed that with an opening round win over tournament host ETSU in the A-Sun Tournament, sending GWU to the league semifinals for the second year in a row. Seniors Brian Bender (Poland), Simon Conn (Australia) and Tim Jennings (Germany) each signed professional contracts after the end their careers at GWU – and strong senior seasons. Faced with a rebuilding process on the recruiting trails after seeing six seniors graduate, Scruggs helped procure an incoming class that was ranked No. 49 nationally by the Hoop Scoop recruiting service. The 2005 A-Sun Coach of the Year directed his squad to the league’s regular season championship that season – and took the Runnin’ Bulldogs just once step away from a spot in the NCAA’s Big Dance, before a loss in the A-Sun championship game ended the magical run. Despite being tabbed ninth in the preseason polls by both coaches and media, Gardner-Webb proved doubters wrong from start to finish – bolting to a 5-0 start in league play and leading the league for all but 52 hours of the 20-game regular season. Brian Bender earned first-team All-Conference honors and was a first-team Academic All-District III selection, Tim Jennings was named Defensive Player of the Year and second-team All-Conference

– and both Bender and center Simon Conn were named to the league’s All-Tournament team in March. The accolades came just one year after an eighth-place finish by GWU in the Atlantic Sun. Scruggs’ ‘Dogs finished 9-20 in 2003-2004, but in the final weeks of that season, Gardner-Webb took eventual A-Sun Tournament cham-pion UCF to overtime in Orlando, and battled regular season champion Troy State to the wire on the road in Alabama. Prior to its first season in the A-Sun in 2002-2003, Gardner-Webb experienced a run that earned the program heaps of national respect and praise. In 2001-2002, Gardner-Webb finished with a 23-9 mark under Scruggs, highlighted by wins over Colorado State, OVC champion and NCAA Tournament participant Murray State, Southern Conference runner up Furman, Ivy League Co-Champion Yale and South Alabama (Sun Belt). Scruggs’ gift of cupcakes to ESPN celebrity Dick Vitale following the GWU win over Colorado State on Nov. 29, 2001, gained national attention for the Bulldogs, as Vitale featured GWU in a column at ESPN.com and sang the program’s praises during several live college bas-ketball broadcasts. In Vitale’s most recent book, the popular sports-caster noted the “cupcake experience” as an enjoyable one. Vitale had given Colorado State his preseason “cupcake” schedule award – citing the fledgling GWU program as one of the cupcakes.

Page 36: hoopsguide10

34

Vitale and many others are now aware: Gardner-Webb basketball under Scruggs is competitive at the Division I level – and have proven to capable of taking major conference squads down with victories over #20 Kentucky, Minnesota, Colorado State and East Carolina, and down to the wire in close losses at North Carolina, Kansas State, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. When Scruggs joined the Gardner-Webb family in 1995, he had at his fingertips a basketball program that had seen plenty of success in its early years. The Bulldogs were a junior college power in the 1960s, led by Gilmore and Adams. After elevating to senior college status, the Bulldogs earned national prominence on the NAIA level in the 1970s behind the hot shooting of Drew, Adams and Dave Borman. Under Scruggs’ direction, the Bulldogs returned to the national scene on the NCAA Division II level and are now on a successful path to success at college basketball’s highest level of competition – NCAA Division I. In its basketball history, Gardner-Webb has advanced to national tournament competition on every level. The only step left is an appear-ance in the NCAA Division I Men’s National Tournament, and GWU will look to make a run at the A-Sun’s automatic bid again during the 2005-2006 season. Scruggs has embraced the Gardner-Webb student section, dubbed the “Dawg Pound”, and encourages student support of the Runnin’ Bulldog program – which has enjoyed success on its home court dur-ing his tenure in Boiling Springs. In 2001-2002, many predicted GWU as the top Division I Independent, and Scruggs’ team didn’t disappoint. Gardner-Webb posted 19 wins against Division I teams and extended its home win streak to 33 games before a season-ending loss. The Runnin’ Bulldogs played host to Mountain West foe Colorado State on Nov. 29, 2001, and rode the energy of a home crowd that exceeded 4,000 to a 56-54 win. The win was monumental in terms of publicity and exposure for a new Division I program. The win was the springboard to a 10-4 start for Gardner-Webb, which included wins over Yale, Furman and Murray State and a close loss at Virginia Commonwealth. Gardner-Webb reeled off 13 more wins in its final 18 games, finishing second in the 2002 National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament. Scruggs, the 1999-2000 South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year has taken at least one team to the national tournament at each level he has coached during 16 years at the helm of programs rang-ing from the junior college level to an NCAA Division II appearance in 1999-2000. the only tournament left is the “Big Dance”, NCAA Division One’s 65-team national championship extravaganza. Scruggs is a winner. And, not only does the Atlanta, Ga., native win, his teams do it with flair – often scoring points at a breakneck pace. In 1999-2000, Gardner-Webb’s final season at the Division II level, Scruggs’ led his Bulldogs to a 25-5 mark and directed an offensive attack that led the Division II South Atlantic Conference in scoring with nearly 90 ppg. GWU also captured its first conference title since 1992 and first SAC crown since the conference moved to NCAA Division II in 1993-94. Not only were the 2000 Bulldogs among the nation’s Division II Top 25 for most of the season in the polls, the team also appeared in sev-eral national statistical categories. Scruggs’ bunch finished seventh nationally in scoring offense (87.7 ppg), 12th nationally in scoring margin (12.9 ppg), 14th nationally in winning percentage (.833, 25-5) and 19th nationally in field goal percentage (48.6 percent). Scruggs, a University of Georgia graduate (1979), is known as an outstanding motivator who is an exciting figure on the sidelines.

His style of play is of the high-octane variety and his 1998 team set South Atlantic Conference records for three-pointers made (254) and attempted (759). The Bulldogs knocked down 237 three-pointers in 1999-2000, 313 in 2000-2001, 271 in 2001-2002 and 269 in 2007-2008. A devout Christian, Scruggs’ involvement in religious and commu-nity projects such as his “Shooting for Christ” ministry have proven to bring his players and staff closer to many in the community. Scruggs has posted a career record of 356-295 during stops at GWU, Milligan (Tenn.), Pikeville (Ky.), Belmont Abbey (N.C.) and North Greenville College. During his time at Gardner-Webb, the Atlanta, Ga., native has won 178 games. Prior to joining the Gardner-Webb family in 1995, Scruggs directed Milligan to a 24-12 record in 1994-95, leading the Buffs to their first appearance in the NAIA Division II National Tournament. The team, led by former GWU assistant coach Chad Dollar, All-American Jason Pittser and former GWU assistant Eric Richardson, averaged an eye-popping 93.7 ppg. While at Pikeville in 1993-94, Scruggs’ team let fly from three-point range for a school-record 943 three-point attempts. The team finished among the nation’s Top 10 in scoring offense and were excit-ing to watch. Scruggs’ final recruiting class with Pikeville was rated the nation’s top effort by one national recruiting service. Scruggs was named conference “Coach of the Year” twice and NJCAA Region X “Coach of the Year” in 1989 while at North Greenville College and his 1989 Mounties won a school-record 30 games and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament. That team finished the regular season with a No. 14 national ranking. Scruggs’ efforts at North Greenville were recognized in 1999, as he was inducted into the North Greenville College Sports Hall of Fame. Scruggs received his Bachelor’s degree from Georgia in 1979 and a Master’s in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 1989. His is married to the former Deanie Gissendanner of Columbia, South Carolina. The couple resides in Boiling Springs.

Ken Huber is in his second sea-son as an assis-tant coach with the Gardner-Webb University program, and will again serve as head coach Rick Scruggs’ top aide. Huber brings a solid list of cre-dentials on the NCAA Division I level to the table, after spending time at programs in the Atlantic Sun Conference and

Sun Belt Conference prior to his arrival in Boiling Springs. Huber came to Gardner-Webb after two seasons at Sun Belt Conference member Florida International (FIU), where he coached a pair of All-Sun Belt Conference selections in 2007-08 – forward Alex Galindo and 7-foot center Russell Hicks. Huber spent the 2005-06 season at Wright State University in his native Ohio, working as the Raiders’ Director of Basketball Operations. The Holgate, Ohio, native became familiar with Gardner-Webb during his time at former Atlantic Sun Conference member Florida Atlantic – where he spent six seasons as an assistant and associ-ate head coach under for-mer NBA player Sidney Green. Huber played a key role in helping the Owls to their first NCAA Division I men’s basketball tour-nament berth in 2002, with that squad setting an FAU record with 19 wins and winning its first – and only – Atlantic Sun Conference men’s tourna-ment crown. Huber also helped lure 2004-05 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the

Year and honorable mention Associated Press All-America Michael Bell to Boca Raton, Fla. Bell led the A-Sun in scoring as a senior. Huber spent a season on Green’s staff at NCAA Division II Southhampton (N.Y.) College, helping oversee a turnaround that saw the Colonials advance to post-season play (NYCAC playoffs) for only the second time in school history. After a summer on the staff at the prestigious Five-Star Basketball Camp, Huber again joined Green as an assistant basketball coach at the University of North Florida (1997-99). Over his two-year tenure, he helped UNF qualify for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament while helping build the booster club’s foundation. Huber is a 1996 graduate of Ohio State. He and his wife, Heather, have three sons, Dean, age 7, Quinn, age 4 and Owen, 1.

Doug Esleeck enters his second season as a full-time assistant coach at Gardner-Webb University, and fourth season overall with the program. During that span, Esleeck has emerged as a solid recruiter and bench coach with great energy and enthusiasm for the

game. Esleeck helped GWU forge a 9-9 mark during the program’s first venture through the Big South Conference ranks last season – and a 16-16 record and a spot in the A-Sun semifinals in 2007-2008. That season, the ‘Dogs ran well to the tune of 77.0 points per game and hit 269 three-point shots on the year. GWU also fin-ished among the league leaders in field goal percentage defense. Esleeck completed require-ments for his MBA at Gardner-Webb University in 2008. A 2005 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Esleeck was a double major who earned degrees in Business Administration and American History. While in Chapel Hill, Esleeck was a member of Carolina’s junior varsity basketball squad for two seasons and worked sev-eral camps. He was an instruc-tor at The University of Kansas Men’s Basketball Camp in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and UNC’s Men’s Basketball Camp in 2002, 2003

and 2004. He also served as assistant director of the “Ready2Hoop” Performance Camp at UNC in 2004. During the 2004-2005 academic year, he served an internship in North Carolina’s Strength and Conditioning office. Esleeck also has extensive coaching experience, serving as the Durham Dragons 15-under AAU head coach from 2003-2005 after serving as an assistant coach for their under-13 team in 2002. In addition, he spent one season as an assistant coach for the UNC junior varsity squad (2003-04) and one season (2004-2005) as an assistant coach at the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham. Esleeck attended Westchester Academy in High Point where he played basketball and ran cross country. He was Westchester Academy’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2000 and 2001 and was named the school’s Outstanding Senior in 2001.

Michael Lee enters his second sea-son as an assis-tant coach with the Gardner-Webb men’s basketball program in 2009-2010, and is a rising star in the collegiate coaching ranks. Lee, who played under both Roy Williams and Bill Self at Kansas during a career that spanned 2002-

2005, spent the 2007-2008 season as a graduate student manager on the Jayhawks’ 2008 National Championship staff. Lee worked with Self’s staff in sev-eral areas last season, including day-to-day operations, travel and scouting. Lee’s experience in the NCAA Final Four isn’t limited to his time with the most recent national championship squad. As a player, the combo guard was a top reserve during a sophomore season that saw Kansas run all the way to the 2003 title game in New Orleans. The Portland, Ore., native netted 13 points and four assists in Kansas’ semifinal win over Dwayne Wade and Marquette, hitting all three of his shots from long range. He averaged 4.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game that sea-son, earning the Clyde Lovellette Award as the team’s most improved player. The Jayhawks also advanced to the 2002 Final Four during Lee’s freshman season. For his career, Lee played in 118 games (nine starts), scored 492 points and proved to be one of the Jayhawks’ top perimeter defend-ers. He was an integral part of Kansas’ teams that won 110 games and spent 63 total weeks ranked in the top-10 by the Associated Press during his playing career – including seven weeks as the nation’s top-ranked squad. Lee also played a part in 22 wins over top-25 opponents and helped the Jayhawks to three Big 12 Conference regular season titles. Lee

was named a team captain in 2004. Lee shared the same jersey number (#25) as KU legend Danny Manning, and became the first Kansas player to wear #25 since Manning led the Jayhawks to the 1988 NCAA Championship. Lee was an Academic All-Big 12 second-team selection as a senior, and graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Following his Kansas playing career, Lee spent the 2005-2006 season with the Harlem Globetrotters. He spent parts of the 2006-2007 season playing professionally on the interna-tional level – in Orleans, France and Vancouver, Washington. He had a stint with the USBL’s Kansas Cagerz (Salina). Prior to choosing Kansas, Lee was a two-sport star at Jefferson (Ore.) High in Portland. He averaged 19.7 points per game as a senior, earning first-team All-State honors in the process. He and future Kansas teammate Aaron Miles led Jefferson to a 28-0 record and a state title as juniors, and also starred together with the Portland Legends AAU program.

Jon Mitchell is in his 10th season as an athletic trainer at Gardner-Webb University and returns in his role as primary contact for men’s basketball – and as Athletic Training Service Director. In addition to his duties with athletic training, Mitchell also handles the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ travel arrangements and logistical planning for road trips. Mitchell will also teach within the department's major. He is directly responsible for overseeing athletic insurance and coordinating inven-tory and purchasing for the athletic training program. Mitchell returned to Gardner-Webb in 2000 after a two-year stint as the head athletic trainer at Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. Mitchell earned his bachelor of science degree from Mars Hill (N.C.) College in 1996 and came to Gardner-Webb University as a graduate assistant athletic trainer the following semester. In addition to working with several sports in Boiling Springs, Mitchell successfully completed work on his Master’s Degree in 1998 and accepted the head trainers position at Newberry. As an undergraduate at Mars Hill, Mitchell was a member of the college’s cross-country team. He and his wife, Stephanie, reside in Shelby with their first son, Payton James “P.J.” (pictured right).

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb enters its second season as a member of the Big South Conference with plenty of experience and a better understanding of the league, its teams and what it will take to move up in the standings. Head coach Rick Scruggs welcomes back six seniors to the fold, with three of those veterans logging at least 14 min-utes per game last season. After an in-jury-plagued season from start to fi nish in 2008-2009, the team’s general health ap-pears to be in good shape for the upcoming campaign – a welcome sign for improving upon last year’s 9-9 league mark (13-17 overall). “We do have plenty of experience, and those players are going to be asked to carry the load for us,” said Scruggs. “Our team went through an adjustment period to the Big South, as I think any team would in a new league. Places we had never traveled before, teams we hadn’t played before. This season, I think we should be more prepared for what we will face within the league, and our kids will be more comfort-able with those things. The Runnin’ Bulldogs were tabbed fourth in the preseason coaches/media poll, sitting on top of a tightly-packed group in the middle of the projected league race. Guard Grayson Flittner (6-0, 200, Sr.) earned preseason All-Big South Con-ference honors for the second season in a row – despite suffering through an injury-riddled junior campaign that saw him miss key time in the midst of the conference race in 2008-2009. Still, Flittner led the team in scoring, averaging 14.5 points in the 25 games he did play. The sharpshooter from Tipton, Ind., knocked down a team-high 72 shots from long distance and led the team with 96 assists – and showed tremendous cour-age fi ghting through a preseason injury to average 32.5 minutes in his 25 appear-ances. Flittner, who has dished off a combined 216 assists over the past two seasons and who has exemplary court vision, will begin the season logging minutes at point guard – a position move he requested and lob-bied for during the offseason. The senior standout was listed as one of the nation’s top-50 shooters dur-ing the preseason by FoxSports.com, but seems eager to prove himself to be a more

Page 51: hoopsguide10

49

complete player during his senior season – which should be of benefi t to the entire squad. “Grayson’s basketball I.Q. is off the charts, and although he is obviously a great pure shooter – the best I’ve coached – he is also very good handling the basketball and is a gifted passer,” said Scruggs. “His talents extend far beyond the ability to put the ball in the basket, and we will depend on him to help our offense click in a variety of ways this season.” A key component to Gardner-Webb’s chances to rise up the Big South Conference standings will ride with the consistency and expected production of center Auryn Mac-Millan (6-8, 235, Sr.) as well in 2009-2010. MacMillan spent this past summer suit-

ing up for Australia at the World University Games in Belgrade, gaining valuable inter-national experience in the process. The big Aussie showed signs of break-ing out last season, averaging a career-high 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting an effi cient 61.4 percent from the fl oor (108-of-176). One of his most memorable efforts came in a four-point loss at No. 12 Okla-homa, when he played 34 minutes, hit all fi ve fi eld goal attempts and fi nished with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots while matched up with National Player of the Year Blake Griffi n. MacMillan had four times more double fi gure scoring games last season (12), than he had in his previous two seasons with

the Runnin’ Bulldogs – and is projected by teammates and coaches as a bright spot in the middle for Gardner-Webb in his fi nal season. “Auryn has improved, physically and mentally, over the past 18 months, and we are optimistic that he can post All-Confer-ence type numbers in the paint this sea-son,” said Scruggs. “His shooting touch is solid out to 17 feet, and he fi nishes more effectively at the rim than he has in years past. The key for him this season is going to be maintaining his conditioning and being consistent. He can be one of the best post players in our league if he plays to his po-tential.” A third senior who is projected to make an appearance in the starting lineup this

Page 52: hoopsguide10

50

season is guard C.J. Hailey (6-0, 190, Sr.), another strong shooter who will man the off guard spot with Flittner running the point. Hailey started seven games last sea-son, and made an impression during that time. The Charlotte, N.C. native scored in double fi gures four times in those seven starts – including a career-high 26 points at VMI that saw him knock down 12-of-20 shots in 28 minutes of action. Hailey also had a 16-point performance in 13 minutes off the bench against Coastal Carolina, and proved to be very effective in that role as well. A solid defensive presence blessed with good strength and instincts, Hailey will be a major factor in Gardner-Webb’s success in 2009-2010. “C.J. got off to a slow start last season with an injury, so he was behind quite a bit during the early portion of the schedule,” said Scruggs. “We missed him quite a bit,

but he showed us just how important he could be down the stretch. This season, he’s healthy, and playing probably as well as anyone during preseason workouts.” Gardner-Webb’s remaining three se-niors – Anton Silver (6-2, 175, Sr.), Matt Maden (6-11, 275, Sr.) and Brandon Jackson (6-0, 205, Sr.) – enter the 2009-2010 season listed in reserve roles for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, but each could make a push for more playing time. Silver, a slashing, athletic wing, is the type of player who fl ourishes in Gardner-Webb’s system – but was hampered by pre-season injuries. The former Concord (N.C.) High standout should be at 100 percent by the start of the season, and will push for considerable playing time. Maden is the only player besides Mac-Millan on the Gardner-Webb roster who is taller than 6-6, and the Roth Well, Austra-lia, native showed a glimpse of his value during the team’s 20-point win at eventual

Big South champion Radford last Decem-ber. Maden, who logged a career-high 18 minutes due to MacMillan’s foul trouble, scored four points, hauled down four re-bounds and was part of an interior defen-sive effort that held Big South Player of the Year Art Parakhouski to just nine points on the evening. Jackson, a strong, athletic point guard, won’t join the team until his fi nal football season ends in late November – but is an-other key reserve who has shown fl ashes of brilliance in the past. The Orlando, Fla., native was a key part of Gardner-Webb’s fi rst-round win in the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, scoring seven points to go with seven re-bounds, seven assists and no turnovers in that game. Expected to join Flittner, MacMillan and Hailey in the starting lineup is wing Jonathan Moore (6-4, 190, Jr.) – a former walk-on who earned a scholarship over the summer after averaging a strong 9.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in 30 games last season (23 starts). Moore is one of the team’s better shooters from long range (37-of-103, 36 percent), and was effective slashing to the basket as well as scoring in transition last season. He netted a team-high 20 points in the 2009 Big South Conference quarterfi nals’ loss at Liberty. “Jon is very active and scores the bas-ketball in a variety of ways,” said Scruggs. “He came in after one season on the junior college level and earned a scholarship. The kid works hard on and off the court, and is a very important piece of the puzzle for us this season.” Starting at the big forward spot is one of the nation’s best undersized players at his position – Josh Henley (6-3, 215, So.). The Nashville, Tenn., native led all NCAA Division I freshmen in rebound-ing last season, corraling 10.3 boards per game to go with 6.8 points per game. His efforts on the glass defy matchups, with players at the same position on op-posing teams regularly standing at least 6-foot-8. Henley simply uses instincts and tenacity to secure the basketball. The former Hunters Lane (Tenn.) High standout worked hard to improve his shooting touch during the offseason, and

Page 53: hoopsguide10

51

will look to improve that part of his game in 2009-2010. Additional scoring from Henley would be a welcomed supplement to his re-bounding prowess. “Josh fi nds the basketball and rebounds very well out of his area,” said Scruggs. “We’ve had some good rebounders at his size since I’ve been here, but he seems to have a knack for knowing how the ball is going to come off the rim. Once he gets his hands on it, it’s normally his. We would like to see him improve his scoring, and he’s working hard to accomplish that.” Gardner-Webb secured a solid recruiting class during the offseason, one that is ex-pected to provide an infusion of athleticism, scoring touch and overall depth in 2009-2010. GWU mined the junior college ranks for immediate scoring punch, with forward Luke Engelken (6-7, 210, Jr.) and guard David Brown (6-2, 180, So.) capable of producing points early this season. Engelken averaged 10.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game last season as a sophomore at Butler (Kan.) Community College, helping the Griz to a 24-9 overall mark and an 11-5 record in the always strong Jayhawk Conference. A combo forward with range past 20 feet, Engelken made a team-high 77 three-point baskets in 2008-2009, and is a very capable shooter all over the fl oor. Engelken was considered one of the top-40 prospects in Missouri at Mid-Buchanan (Mo.) High, earning All-State honors as a senior. Brown starred last season at Broward (Fla.) College, leading his team with 14.2 points per game and 75 three-point makes. Brown made 40.1 percent of his shots from long distance last season, earning fi rst-team All-Southern Florida Conference hon-ors in the process. He redshirted the previ-ous season at NAIA powerhouse Lee (Tenn.) University, and will have three seasons left with Gardner-Webb. Brown was a two-time All-Area selection at American Heritage School at Boca-Delray in the prep ranks, averaging 22 points as a senior. “In Luke and David, we gain players with experience against high level compe-tition who have the ability to put points on the board,” Scruggs said. “Both are very different players, obviously, but both can re-ally shoot the basketball from deep. David

has show exceptional range on his jumper during preseason workouts, and Luke is capable of scoring inside or out effectively. They both will push for heavy minutes early this season.” Guard Bryan Burrell (6-1, 175, Jr.) also joined the Gardner-Webb program over the summer as a walk-on, and was among the national leaders at the NJCAA Division II level in assists per game at Vance-Granville (N.C.) Community College last season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs inked a quartet of high school prospects, two guards and two forwards, who appear to have bright futures on the college level. Guard Brian McNair (6-0, 165, Fr.) is already pushing for considerable minutes at point guard, after starring at the Greenfi eld (N.C.) School over the past two seasons. McNair, one of the top point guards in the North Carolina high school ranks last season, averaged 16 points, six assists and four steals as a senior to earn NCISSA All-State honors – an All-State team that fea-tured four high-major prospects, including current Kentucky freshman sensation John

Wall, among others. McNair has a knack for getting into the lane effectively and is capable of scoring in transition or from long distance. His play early will be key to Gardner-Webb’s ability to push an up-tempo pace. Forward Keith Manley (6-6, 220, Fr.) could be the surprise of the group, entering his fi rst college season with a versatile skill set and fundamentally sound approach to the game. Manley is surprisingly athletic and ca-pable of playing either forward spot. He has shown range past the three-point line, and can be a very consistent threat from that distance. The former Greensboro Grimsley (N.C.) High star is expected to compete very early for playing time. Guard Thomas Staton (6-6, 200, Fr.) was a late addition to the class, and is an-other prospect with a world of potential. The son of former University of Michigan player Tom Staton has excellent size and length, and is capable of playing either guard spot, and the small forward position. As a senior at state powerhouse

Page 54: hoopsguide10

52

Clarkston (Mich.) High near Detroit, Staton played lead guard for a team that featured a quartet of Division I prospects – and played that position well. Recruited as a point guard by Gardner-Webb’s staff, Staton averaged 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists as a senior – and was rated as one of Michigan’s top-25 prospects in the Class of 2009. Forward Stefon Johnson (6-6, 215, Fr.) will immediately be one of the team’s most athletic frontcourt players, and should be a very strong addition to the rotation in the paint. No stranger to success on the hardwood, Johnson played at Ohio powerhouse Princ-eton High in Cincinnati, helping the Vikings to the state fi nals last season and wins over several nationally prominent programs over

the past two seasons. A two-time All-City selection, Johnson is a gifted shot blocker who has shown a surprisingly strong touch on his jump shot – from mid-range to three-point land. “This is a strong group of freshmen, there is no doubt about that,” Scruggs said. “They are eager to learn and have the abil-ity to help our program succeed – not only this season but for the next four seasons as well. “We were pleased with the group we were able to sign, and are confi dent that they will mesh well with our returning players on and off the court.” Gardner-Webb is traditionally fond of tough non-conference schedules, but the 2009-2010 ledger has perhaps the program’s most daunting level of diffi culty ever.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs will play three of the nation’s top-8 teams (ESPN.com), with trips to defending national champion North Carolina and traditional college basketball powers Texas and Duke. GWU threw in Penn State (Big Ten) and Charlotte (Conference USA), along with home dates against James Madison and Western Carolina for good measure. Gardner-Webb will also host a game in ESPNU’s annual Bracket Busters event in early February. The Big South Conference race is ex-pected to be tight once again, with defending champion Radford returning its entire start-ing lineup, and several programs reloaded for a run at challenging the Highlanders. †
