Greetings, Autumn is definitely upon us now. The leaves have finally started to turn colors, Halloween has come and gone and Election Day is right around the corner. Many of you have noticed the flowers planted around the building this fall. Lorrie Redmond has donated these flowers and her time to plant them. They definitely spruce the area up for fall. When you see Lorrie, thank her for making the Lodge a little brighter. The Hendersonville Elks held a Halloween party for all the little ghosts, vampires and princesses among us (the rest of the year they are just our kids). This annual endeavor has grown every year and this year is no exception. But thanks to Megan and her assistant vampires Kristie and Mark Cantrell, the party was a huge success and the kids had a great time. Kristie always said that Mark has a flare for decorating and after seeing how he put the room together I now understand why she says it. Look out HGTV! Thanks to everyone who helped set up, pack away and entertain the children during the Halloween festivities. As mentioned earlier Election Day is right around the corner. And while the Elks do not endorse any person or political party / affiliation we do encourage you to exercise your right to cast ballot for your person of choice. This right is guaranteed to us by our Constitution. This document has been fought for numerous times by our men and women in the armed services. This past summer I mentioned we added a second blood drive to the Elks schedule. I asked everyone to mark their calendar for November 2 and make the time to donate blood. Well, and time goes whizzing by, November 2nd is upon us. We are expecting to see a strong turnout from our Elks membership since you took the time to mark your calendars. Donations are being accepted from 9 AM to 2 PM. Phil Childs has been hard at work creating new dishes for all of us to enjoy. And as the mood strikes, Scott Larned has been running some of these creations as last minute specials. But we are having a hard time getting the word out to our members since our only line of communication to all of you is through this newsletter. While this is an important vehicle to keep you up to date on the happenings around the lodge, it does not work well for communicating dinner specials or newly signed live entertainment during the month. Greetings,

Autumn is definitely upon us now.

Scott has committed to sending out Lounge updates via email to all members who sign up for the email list. Your email address will be kept in strict confidence and not used for anything other than Hendersonville Elks business. To be placed on our email list send your email address to [email protected]. See you at My Brother’s Place.

November also brings Veterans Day. Veterans are held in very high regard by Elks. Our pledge “SO LONG AS THERE ARE VETERANS, THE BENEVOLENT AND PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS WILL NEVER FORGET THEM” should act as reminder to all of us that our work for the veterans is never done. VETERANS NEWSOn Thursday, November 14th, at 7:00 PM, Chris and Shirley Drake will be hosting their monthly Bingo night for our veterans at the V.A. Hospital in Asheville. This month, in honor of Veterans Day, a special treat is being planned for our ‘heroes’. One of their favorite meals is chili (for which Shirley is famous) and corn bread, and that is what they will be getting following the games. Desserts are, of course, popular as well; so if there are any of you who would like to bake some cookies, cupcakes, etc. to send along with Chris and Shirley, it would be more than appreciated. Sugar-free items are also in demand. AND, if any of you teachers would like to have your students make greeting cards thanking these veterans for their service, we know they love and appreciate getting those, too.

Volunteers are always needed. These veterans, both men and women, are delightful and look forward to us being there with them on the second Thursday of every month. We help them with their Bingo cards and then serve them food and beverages afterwards, as many are confined to wheelchairs and have trouble getting around. If you would like to join in and help with this activity, which only lasts about hour and a half, please plan to be at the hospital no later than 6:45 PM. For information please contact Chris or Shirley at 828-693-4061; or [email protected].

On Monday, November 11th, which is Veterans Day, please plan to travel with the Veterans Affairs Committee to both the V.A. Hospital in Asheville and the North Carolina State Veterans Nursing Home in Black Mountain to personally thank the veterans for their service to our great Nation. We will be handing out golden dollars as we tour the facilities, meeting with these outstanding heroes. For details of this outing, please contact Frank Brady at 828-489-7492; or [email protected]

On November 9th the Veteran’s Committee will purchase a meal for each Veteran of the Hendersonville Lodge 1616 who provides name & branch of service. Dinner served 5-8:30 pm.

Doe TracksDear Sister DOES:The year is moving along quickly and our Drove has accomplished much. I wish to once again thank DOES and Elks alike for supporting our many projects: raffle baskets, indoor yard and bake sales, and Barnyard Bingo nights. The majority of the proceeds raised by these activities have gone to support the many charities, local and nationwide, that call upon us for assistance. Please don’t forget that Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on everything we have in our lives to be thankful for. Many folks have very little in these troubled times, so always be thankful for what you have been blessed with. On behalf of our Hendersonville DOES, I would like to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.--Sandy Cornelius-Brady, Drove President

BRCC SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEONFour of our DOES, Bessie Bright, Carol Dawson, Marge Mitchell, and Joy Straughan, recently had the pleasure of attending a luncheon held at the Blue Ridge Community College honoring their scholarship recipients for this coming year. As you may know, each year our Drove donates $1,000 to the BRCC Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is awarded annually to a single deserving mother with the goal of bettering herself and receiving an education. We were able to meet and sit with our recipient this year, Jalisa M. Harper. Jalisa, who was also our scholarship recipient this past year, is majoring in nursing, and is the mother of a 3-year old son. She is a very ambitious young woman; and we are proud to once again be able to assist her in achieving her goals.

BARNYARD BINGOPlease come out and have a blast with us again this month when on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20th, at 7:30 PM, the DOES will present another fun-filled evening of clucks, oinks, moo’s and laughter. This will be our last Barnyard Bingo night of the year. The special $2 game will be for a turkey.

A portion of the proceeds that evening will be used for the Elks Christmas charities program. This year the DOES plan to purchase small gifts for the older children (14-18) who don’t qualify, age-wise, for the toys the younger children receive.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERAt our DOES meeting on October 9th, we had a new member join our Drove: Kerris Drake. We are so pleased to have Kerris as a sister. A small reception was held afterward; and we wish to thank all of you who turned out to welcome her into our family.

NOVEMBER DOES MEETINGDue to the Thanksgiving Day holiday later this month, our ONLY meeting in November will be held on Wednesday, the 13h, at 7:00 PM. Please keep in mind that at this meeting we will be holding nominations and electing new DOES officers for
