    New Solar Panels

We are excited to announce the new additiono our facility. Hoo Haven is now sporting aew Photovoltaic Green Energy System,

which is just fancy wording for solar panels.

hanks to a group of people donating towardhe new panels, the Illinois Clean Energy

Community Grant Program caught on andook over the program to donate the panels toHoo.

hese panels will be placed on the side of thehop building to a mount so that it can be

moved and positioned at any angle to acquiremost sunlight.

he solar panels will convert the suns rays orolar radiation into electricity, thereby givings electricity from the sun. The panels will

make our electricity bills significantly lessxpensive.

Peace the bald eagle set to go home

Peace the bald eagle that has been with us

since October 2011 is finally being released

back to the wild. He was shot down near the

Illinois River in Hennepin, Ill. His wing

required six pins to hold it into place.

We are ecstatic about the quick recovery Peace

has undergone. We are giving him the

necessary treatment to get him back to his

    home as soon as possible.

We are looking forward to releasing Peace on

Pelican Day at Starved Rock State Park in

    April.

Check out our calendar of events at the end of

this newsletter to get more information about

    the event. Or visit hoohaven.org.

    Pelican Day at Starved Rock

We will be taking a trip down to Starved R

State Park Saturday, March 10, to educate

those in attendance about the importance

    conserving wildlife and nature.

We will also bring along our Great

    Ambassadors including Matahva the turk

    vulture, Samantha the red-tailed hawk,

Rootbeer the snake and a few of our fellow

owl friends. !!It is important to note that the government haspermitted Hoo to use these exotic animals fo

    educational purposes.

The crowd always enjoys our presentation

and who can blame them. The birds of pre

and the snake with a sassy attitude all ma

    for a great family outing.

They are incredible animals that individua

dont get to see on a daily basis.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has granted

Hoo to become the official rehab and recovery

    center for eagles since 2004.

ontrolling the temperature is important fornimals at Hoo. Having cost-efficient electricitys crucial for such changes in temperatures.

If everyone does a little, we can do a lotKaren Herdklotz

    Director, Hoo Haven

xelon was grateful to help kickstart a newonation program by granting Hoo Haven

with $35,000. The money will go toward a newwaterfowl and mammal rehab center.

efore this new addition, any aquatic animalhat needed consistent climate control would

have used a child-sized inflatable pool sittingon cold, concrete floors.

The new aquatic center will give wateranimals like otters, pelicans and beaversfreedom to roam in a comfortable and naturalenvironment.

This group does so much to help the wildlifein northern Illinois that we knew we couldmake a donation that would have a positive

impact on their rehabilitation efforts, statedVice President of Exelon Tim Tulton.

A number of our employees are volunteers atHoo Haven, said Tulton.

Our main constraints in fulfilling our missionwere the inadequate amounts of resourcesavailable to us. Now, because of all ourdonors, our animals will be given thenecessities they need.

Exelon donated $35,000 to go toward a new

aquatic wildlife building that will cost more

    than $50,000.
