Watch Week in Review

Safety TipsThere’s nothing better than the Thanksgiving tradition of eating turkey and watching football. Tossing the football in the yard has its perils, but so does cooking the turkey. That’s right. Some people get the exciting idea each year of deep frying the turkey. Sure it’s delicious, but please be careful! Make sure you keep the fryer a safe distance away from the house and outside of course. Cook on flat ground so you don’t spill the hot oil. Use a thawed and dry turkey, because oil and water are not friends. Watch the temperature, because the handle and the lid can get extremely hot and cause burns. Finally, make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy. We have so much to be thankful for this holiday season, especially when it comes to our health. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

From the County ExecutiveWe have so much to be proud of as my first term as your County Executive comes to a close. It has been an amazing journey.Among the things I am most proud of is the modernization and organization of our local government to better serve the citizens and plan for the future efficiently. We reduced taxes and fees by more than $160 million over the last four years. It’s not an enormous amount of money, but it put more money in the pockets of taxpayers to start businesses and raise their families.

We accelerated school construction at a record pace, starting work on numerous schools including a brand new high school for Crofton. For the first time since 1982, Anne Arundel County will expand the total number of high schools from 12 to 13.We were able to increase pay for teachers, firefighters, police officers and other public servants. We need to do more, but this was a great start coming out of a terrible recession that hit every sector of the economy hard.Other facilities are being built: A new police academy and central boooking, new fire stations, road repairs, park expansions and trails. These projects have been neglected for too long, and now they are coming to fruition. Let’s not forget our efforts to clean up the environment. We have 300 waterway improvement projects in various stages that are often out of sight and out of mind but make a huge difference in the health of the Chesapeake Bay.We have headed up an effort to stop heroin addiction that is a national model. It has been an honor and a tremendous privilege to serve as your County Executive.
