On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we warmly welcome you to this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting in Anaesthesiology. The meeting theme “Towards a Greater Mind” has been carefully chosen to highlight the importance of stimulating our minds with new knowledge and evidence, being more mindful of safety gaps in our current practice, embracing innovation and technology that can take anaesthetic care to new heights, and building resilience and well-being within ourselves to let us provide the best care for our patients.

Our scientific programme will bring you the latest developments in preoperative optimization, extended recovery stay, lower limb regional techniques in high risk cases, sharing from experts on managing the “pump and the pipes” inside and outside of our patients, and the “extra mile” anaesthetists can walk to improve comfort and safety for mothers and children. Our safety symposium, oxygenation workshop and crisis refresher workshop aims to explore ways to make the OR safer, and equip participants with skills to handle challenging anaesthetic scenarios.

Woven into our social programme is a series of activities aimed to nourish the mind. The “Greater Mind Workshop Series” combine insights from neuroscience and behavioral psychology with meditation techniques to promote mindfulness and resilience. We also invite you to a unique chocolate workshop and labyrinth walking meditation experience towards the end of the day to unwind. A very unusual “patient” will present for “surgery” at our Congregation Dinner that requires the joint effort of all guests to restore well-being. Our new take on the evening promises laughter and excitement along with a delicious buffet.

The Hong Kong people is unique in our identity, energy and craving for novelty. Our city is constantly evolving with new sights, artistic installments, revitalization projects and dynamic food scene. We sincerely invite you to come experience the hustle-bustle of our metropolis and the tranquility of our hillside.

The ASM is a place to renew friendships, extend our networks, and jointly explore current and future directions of our speciality. Come be inspired at our meeting and leave with a greater and healthier mind.

W3 - Perioperative Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test CPET WorkshopTime: 13:30-15:00 and 15:30-17:00Facilitators: Prof. Denny LEVETT (United Kingdom), Dr. Ka-Ying CHOW, Dr. Eric CHUNG, Dr. Cherry TSE, Dr. Ryan WAN, Dr. Christopher YIM (Hong Kong)

More and more, CPET is an essential tool in perioperative medicine. Everyone has come across it, but how many of you know how to make good use of it? This workshop aims to enhance participants' understanding of the application of CPET, as well as share with everyone how to select patients for the test and how the information gained from CPET can help us make better decisions and deliver better outcomes in the perioperative journey. CPET expert, Prof. Denny LEVETT will share with us her experiences in the application of CPET in the perioperative setting and lead the interactive case based discussions. Participants will also have opportunities to see a live step-by-step demonstration of the CPET on healthy volunteers and learn how to interpret it.

M1 - The Greater Mind Workshop SeriesM1A. Productivity: Working Smarter, Working SaferTime: 10:30-12:30Facilitator: Mr. Phil DOBSON (United Kingdom)

Too often we spend our days ‘busy’, working on the wrong things. We find it hard to maintain our focus, even harder to switch off. As our work load increases we tend to respond by working even harder, and becoming even less effective. The solution is to work smarter based on what we know about the brain. In this workshop, you will learn how to become more goal-oriented and improve your prioritisation. Working with a clear mind, and sustaining our concentration throughout the day is the key to patient safety.

• IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFECTIVENESS • REDUCED OVERWHELM AND ‘BUSYNESS’ • ENHANCED PATIENT SAFETY

M1B. Be Mindful, Not Mind Full for Exams (Trainees)Time: 15:00-17:00Facilitator: Mr. Phil DOBSON (United Kingdom)

The fellowship exams are one of the toughest hurdles we have to go through as trainees. We need a combination of mindfulness, resilience and high productivity in order to succeed. Research in neuroplasticity shows that your brain is like a muscle, in this regard, mindfulness and meditation offer some of the best forms of “brain-training. Combining applicable techniques with insights from neuroscience, you learn how to strengthen your focus, increase your mental flexibility, and develop your emotional health and wellbeing. This workshop is designed especially for trainees, to help them develop the right frame of mind to face the big challenge.

• INCREASED FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION• REDUCED STRESS AND IMPROVED PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH• IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFECTIVESS

M2 - Labyrinth Walking in Action WorkshopM2A Time: 16:00-17:00 (Session 1) M2B Time: 17:00-18:00 (Session 2)Facilitators: Dr. Robby LAI, Dr. Geoffrey LAM (Hong Kong)

A labyrinth is usually a large circular pattern about 40 feet in diameter. It has one path that begins on the outer edge and moves in a circuitous way to the center. Some labyrinth designs are as old as four to five thousand years of age. The world most famous one is the Eleven Circuit Medieval labyrinth that was placed in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in 1201. Walking the labyrinth had many uses. According to the Reverend. Dr. Lauren ARTRESS, 'The labyrinth is a spiritual tool that reduces stress, quiets the mind and opens the heart. It is a walking meditation, a path of prayer and a blueprint where psyche meets Spirit.' The participants are invited to join the walk with the Veriditas accredited facilitator, Dr. Geoffrey LAM, and the clinical psychologist, Dr. Robby LAI. They have run the 'Labyrinth and Health' and the 'Stress management through labyrinth walking' workshops for the NTEC healthcare providers. A brief history, various methods of walking and the resources will be introduced. Much time will be reserved for the participants to walk the labyrinth to 'experience the experience'.

M3 - The Chocolate WorkshopTime: 17:00-18:00Facilitator: Prof. Charles GOMERSALL (Hong Kong)

Cacao is a small artisan chocolate company focused on taste, ethical sourcing and environmentally friendly practices. We’ll be teaching you how the origin and quality of cocoa, age, cocoa concentration and type of sugar affect the taste of chocolates, while telling you about our story and how chocolate is made. Price includes a box of 8 of our pralines (usual retail price HK$160) and an additional sample box of chocolates. To know more about us, follow us on Facebook at cacao.hk.
