Word of the Week: Initial - first Science Word of the Day (Review): Index Fossil - a type of fossil that was widely distributed and lived for a brief period of time; used for relative dating of rock layers they are found in
EQ: What can you infer about Earth's age from rock layers and fossils?
Warm-up - 3 October 2019How can index fossils be used to correlate rock layers from different locations?
If rock layers at different locations contain the same index fossil, one could infer the rock layers were laid down during the same time frame.

Thursday, 3 October 2019 - Finding Clues in Rock Layers
CO: (8.E.2.1) You will be able to infer the age of Earth and relative age of rocks and fossils from index fossils and ordering of rock layers (relative dating (age) and radioactive dating)LO: You can analyze clues in rock layers at 2 different sites and compare and contrast to infer how organisms and environment changed over time.EQ: What can you infer about Earth's age from rock layers and fossils?
Warm-Up Activity - How can index fossils be used to correlate rock layers from different locations?.

Lab Title: Finding Clues to Rock Layers
Problem: How can you use fossils and geologic features to interpret the relative ages of rock layers?
Procedure:
1. Study the rock layers at Sites 1 and 2. Write down the similarities and differences between the layers at the two sites. (You may use a graphic organizer, like a double-bubble map to compare and contrast, but type final answers into Google Doc in the Google Classroom Assignment.)2. List the kinds of fossils that are found in each rock layer of Sites 1 and 2.Analyze and Conclude: (Answer questions in complete sentences.)More to Explore: (Do on separate sheet of paper.)
