Picturing an extraordinary movement

In 2003, Mel Young, founder of the

Scottish street paper “The big issue“ and

of the “International Network of Street

Papers”, created a unique movement: the

Homeless World Cup (HWC). The HWC

is an annual soccer competition for

homeless people and helps young home-

less all over the world to find a way back

into society.

Mauricio Bustamante, Argentinean

photographer, accompanied the Home-

less World Cup since the first competiti-

on in 2003 with his camera. He’s been

on site at all five locations in Graz,

Gothenburg, Edinburgh, Cape Town and

Copenhagen. Bustamante is the ONE

documentalist of this World Cup, a

blessing for the social side of soccer. His

committed photo-documentaries are

characterized by a close relationship with

the people he portrays in his unique way,

building these people their own photo-

graphical monument. In his work he

connects art and life in an outstanding

manner.Prologue

For the 7th Homeless World Cup 2008 in

Milan, Italy, the last six championships are

depicted in a 40-page magazine (print run of

10.000, DinA4 size, 4/4 color) as a chronolo-

gical photo-series by Mauricio Bustamante.

The collages show all events around the

soccer ball: The matches in the stadiums,

portraits of participants, life at accommodati-

on facilities, the excitement of the audience

and much more. The illustrated book inclu-

des a preface by Alex Ferguson, coach of Man-

chester United, as well as texts about the

history of the HWC, about Mauricio Busta-

mante and his relationship with the HWC as

well as introducing texts to each single cham-

pionship.

Since most players live from selling street

papers, this special magazine is sold by the

players for 3 R per issue during the tourna-

ment in Milan. In addition each team has the

option to acquire a limited number of issues

to sell in their home country. The seller can

keep one Euro himself, one Euro will be

donated to the organization of the HWC and

one Euro goes to the Berlin social project

PLAY!YA, the publisher of this magazine.

The association PLAY!YA was founded in

2008 as a social movement and to develop

modern sports. Its focus is not on records,

but rather on “social profit”: How can sports

encourage human development, support cul-

tural diversity and social engagement?

PLAY!YA brings together people and organi-

zations, develops methods, concepts and

events. In June 2008, PLAY!YA organized the

1st Berlin Streetsoccer Day STRASSE!KICKT,

together with 15 other projects and youth ins-

titutions. Part of the event was a photo exhibi-

tion by Mauricio Bustamante, showing soccer

scenes from all over the world.
