UKHCA is running a campaign to ask local authorities to recognise the implications of increased holiday pay on the homecare sector.

On 1st October 2007 the statutory annual leave entitlement in England, Scotland and Wales1 changes from 4 weeks to 4.8 weeks (from 20 days to 24 days for people working a five day week).2,

We’ve written to the Director of Social Services at every local authority that commissions homecare services, to explain the impact of the extended holiday pay on the homecare sector. We’ve asked each council to confirm whether they’ll be increasing the price they pay to homecare agencies. A copy of our letter is printed on pages and 4. We’ll provide a summary of the results to UKHCA members.

In the meantime, you may wish to use our letter as an opportunity to ask your local authority customers to confirm their intentions,

1 The Department for Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland is bringing forward proposals for Northern Ireland.2 Entitlements are pro rated for those working part-time. See www.berr.gov.uk/employment/holidays. The rate is set to rise again on 1st April 2009 to 5.6 weeks (28 days for a five-day week).

either individually, or by tabling our letter at your provider group meetings with your local authority customers.

If you need additional material to make your case, please use UKHCA’s Position Statement “A Fair Price for Care”, which can be downloaded free from www.ukhca.co.uk/downloads.aspx?id=114.

Members should be aware of the need to avoid allegations of a breach of the Competition Act, particularly when acting collectively and they should seek legal advice on such issues. In general terms meetings of provider groups do not breach competition law in themselves. However, the exchange of sensitive information, particularly pricing information, between providers is considered to have a potential impact on the market and must be avoided.

    SEEING ME

…asking youDual sensory impairment makes life pretty tough for older people – but there’s a lot you can do to help.

SEEING ME is a useful toolkit for those providing or managing services for older people. It offers information and advice about hearing and sight loss and how older people can be supported. It is available from:

If you work with older people then some will probably have poor sight and hearing. But you may not realise this.

Who will pay for increased holiday entitlement?

“Supervision leads the way to quality care” says

Fran McDonnell, author of the Homecare in Practice

article in the July edition of Homecarer magazine.

Fran will help you to meet this vision at a

workshop on Supervision that she has designed

    specifically for UKHCA.

UKHCA’s Head of Policy, Colin Angel, said

“Supervision of careworkers is an essential

component of quality assurance procedures. As

    regulators implement systems of proportionate

regulation, it will become even more important

than ever to be able to demonstrate how providers

monitor their workforce on a regular basis.”

This pilot workshop will be specific to the

needs of the homecare sector and will take

place at UKHCA’s headquarters in Sutton, Surrey

in November 2007 (date to be confirmed).

Places will be extremely limited, so keep

looking at the UKHCA website for further details

    www.ukhca.co.uk/conferences.aspx.

    New Supervision Workshop Coming Soon

Dementia can affect people of any age, but it affects one in five people over 80 and one in 20 people over 65.

Dementia is a progressive condition, becoming more severe over time. The range of symptoms are characterised by a decline in memory, reasoning and communication skills, and a gradual loss of skills needed to carry out daily activities.

Dementia can be a challenging condition, but people affected remain unique, but vulnerable, human beings, entitled to being treated with dignity and respect.

UKHCA’s Dementia Training Pack provides the means to train careworkers about the effect dementia can have on the person, the family and those around them. The programme follows the Skills for Care Knowledge Set for Dementia and has been developed following discussion with service providers and Dementia Groups.

The pack will guide the instructor to train care staff either on a one to one basis, in small discussion groups or within a whole day’s workshop. See the order form on page 11 for more details.
