£666Solar SystemsSolar water heating can be used in the home or for larger applications, such as swimming pools. For a domestic system you will need 3-4 square metres of southeast to southwest facing roof receiving direct sunlight for the main part of the day. You’ll also need space to locate an additional water cylinder if required.

Choosing a system suitable to your needs requires consideration of a range of factors, including the area of south facing roof, the existing water heating system and your budget. Jersey Gas offers two types of solar hot water systems.

VaillantUsing radiation from the sun, a sophisticated solar collector is used to transfer the maximum amount of energy possible into a fluid which runs through the collector and which is then used to indirectly heat water in a storage cylinder.

Alpha SolarSmartThe unvented cylinder in the SolarSmart system stores the water that is indirectly heated by the solar panel. With a 90-litre capacity, the cylinder is smaller and lighter than most solar cylinders, and yet can provide enough hot water for an average family sized property as it is linked to a combination boiler. Because of its size, the cylinder is wall mounted and comes complete with a wall-mounting bracket and a template to simplify installation.

How it works

1. First it stores the condensate normally expelled into the atmosphere through the boiler flue

2. Then, heat from this condensate is recycled to pre-heat water coming into the boiler from the cold mains supply

3. This significantly reduces the amount of gas required to heat the water by the boiler

4. The amount of energy needed for the boiler to meet household demands is therefore reduced bringing lower energy bills and greater carbon savings

The Alpha GasSaver is a stainless steel construction that uses three main internal heat exchangers to maximise boiler efficiency and thereby reducing nuisance pluming.
