Principal’s Corner

This has certainly been an interesting stretch of weather. We did

have to cancel our Family Literacy Night this past Wednesday

due to the weather. Although we were not able to reschedule this for an evening, we did invite this presenter back on Friday

afternoon where he did a presentation for many of our K-2

students. I want to thank Mrs. Schneyer and Mrs. Schott for all

of their work in planning this event.

Most of our students in grades 3-5 have now completed their state testing and we celebrated that with an extra recess time

and some treats. Those students who were absent during testing

will be making up any missed tests this week. Testing results

won’t be available until next fall.

We have some staff who have announced their retirements effective at the end of this school year. Mrs. Cheryl Ward, our

PK4 teacher for many years and Mrs. Vicki Burritt, our Speech/

Language Teacher for many years are both retiring. I want to

thank them for their many years of service to our staff, students and families. Congratulations! We also want to wish Mrs.

Schott, Title I Teacher the best as she moves to Homer, Alaska

next year. Her husband will be working at the local hospital and

she will be teaching in an elementary school there.

It is the time of year I begin to think about scheduling students into classrooms for next school year. There are many

considerations while placing students into classrooms including

individual student needs, class composition and others. On

another page in this newsletter you will find our projected

staffing for next school year. Parents can make teacher requests in writing explaining why you feel your child is best suited to be

placed with a specific teacher. This request does not guarantee

placement but I will certainly consider it as I place students in

classrooms for next year. These written requests can be made by

letter or e-mail to me by May 2nd.

Mrs. Anderson’s class took the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors the morning after the recent April snow storm. The outdoor classroom area as well as the

trees were covered in a fresh blanket of snow. The early morning observation proved timely as the kids were able to see a fox up close and hear a woodpeck-er in a nearby tree. They were able to share the beauty of the frog pond area with our volunteers from the UW-L Football team! The class went back out

four days later for Earth Day and as the picture shows, the weather was very different, sunny and 73 degrees!

Summit Student Council News:

This Friday, April 27th is special in two ways:

It is SPORTS DAY!

Our April Fun Day is Sports Day. Students are encouraged to wear apparel in support

of their favorite sports team, or they may wear their own uniform or other gear from a

sport in which they participate themselves.

It is also Aluminum Recycling Day!

Aluminum cans can be dropped off by the Summit flagpole by 9am on April 27th.

Cans should be secured in plastic bags. All proceeds from recycling will be spent right

here at Summit to support our learning. Thanks for your support!

Celebrate Earth Week by bringing your aluminum to school

April 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Children’s book author, Aaron Reynolds, will be coming to Summit Environmental School on Tuesday, May 15 and will be presenting programs to our students. Aaron Reynolds is a New York Times Bestselling Au-thor of many highly acclaimed books for kids including CREEPY PAIR OF UNDERWEAR!, CAVEBOY DAVE, NERDY BIRDY, NERDY BIRDY TWEETS, and the Caldecott Honor Medalist CREEPY CARROTS!. He regularly makes time to visit elementary schools, where his hilarious and hands-on presentations keep kids spell-bound.

Mr. Reynolds has offered to autograph his books after his visit. If your child currently owns one of his books, please bring the book(s) to the library by Monday, May 14 for autographing. Their books will be au-tographed by Mr. Reynolds and returned to the students on May 16. ART NEWS!!!

Congratulations to April’s Artist of the Month: Brynn—OK, Ryder—ZK, Andrew—1S,

Hayleigh—1W, Lili—2Sinn, Kian—2S, Asia –3J, Seng Pao—3G, Panyia—4B, Payton—4F,

Gianna—5M and Levi—5R. Great job demonstrating leadership and compassion in the art

room.

I would like to sincerely thank all the Summit families who came to celebrate Youth Art

Month at the Campbell Library on French Island. There was a huge attendance and sup-

port for our creative Summit students. I look forward to seeing smiling faces and excite-

ment each year. Your support and dedication to our visual arts program speaks loudly.

Continue to inspire, create and dream of the possibilities.

Artfully Yours,

Carissa Brudos

Mrs. Brudos Receives Award Congratulations goes out to Mrs. Brudos who was recent-ly named La Crosse County Library’s Public School Edu-cator of the Year. Mrs. Brudos held the spring art recep-tion at the Campbell location and as a result brought a very high volume of people through the library…more than 300 people attended. The art work our students produce, much of which is done with recycled materials, helps to make our school come alive. Mrs. Brudos also selects many pieces of student art each month, frames them and displays them in our school office. Students are very proud of their work hanging in the office for the month. Congratulations Mrs. Brudos and thanks for all you do!

Summit PTO

Next meeting- June 7, 2018 @ 5:30PM Summit LMC

There isn’t a meeting in May – June meeting is to close out this school year

and set calendar for next year

It’s almost time .. CHICKEN Q!

Mark your calendars.. our 2018 Chicken Q is Thursday May 3, 2018

The last day to turn in money collected and/or un sold tickets is Thursday

26th. PTO staff is available every morning in the lobby to collect money,

take un sold tickets, and to hand out more tickets. Please do not forget

the due date as student sales/prize cut off is April 26th.

Without this fund-raiser the PTO wouldn’t be able to sponsor many of the

field trips and extras we do today. We appreciate the effort each

family puts into this and are hoping for a record year!

************************************************************************

Walk to School… mark your calendars!

Walk to school has been off to a slow start due to the weather however

we are hoping it’s all past us now. Walk to school is every Thursday

through May 24th. Walkers meet at 7:15am and begin walking around

7:25/7:30.

There will also be a bike to school May 9th

************************************************************************

Milk Moola and Box Tops

Don’t forget we need your box tops and Milk lids (Kwik Trip only) Collection cans are

located upon entering the LMC. No donation is too small!

The PTO is proud to announce we have donated $1000 to the

student counsel.

Last school year the PTO purchased the water bottles (sold in the

school store) with the intent all money collected would be returned

to the PTO. There is no mark up on the water bottles sold, the price

is to cover ‘cost’.

Due to the success of this and last year’s fund raising we are now

able to donate this money.

The Summit Student Counsel is generous to the school and the PTO

wanted to help them continue!
