4 The Downsville TimesScholar Recognition Banquet

Alexis Fox and Ms. Christine Baldauf represented DCS at the 2019 Scholar Recognition Banquet which was held at the Hunt Union Ballroom at SUNY Oneonta. The program began as an Otsego County Chamber of Commerce initiative and has grown into a program that enhances relationships between the business community, schools, and institutions of higher and continuing education. The program recognizes students who have achieved outstanding scholastic achievement at a school district, public, private and parochial secondary schools in the DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory areas.

In addition to honoring a student, it also recognizes a teacher of the student’s choice who has been a significant and beneficial inf luence on the student.

Health ClassHEALTH STUDENTS HEAR ABOUT THE UNDER-AGE CONSEQUENCES OF ALCOHOL USE

Officer Cawley from the Colchester Police Department met with High School Health class students to discuss the legal consequences of using alcohol. Included in the discussion was Leandra’s Law.

Leandra’s Law is named after Leandra Rosado, an 11 year-old who was killed in a car crash after the driver, who had allegedly been drinking for several hours prior to the crash, lost control of her vehicle.

Effective on December 18, 2009, the law sets some of the toughest DWI provisions in the country. Leandra’s Law includes:

First time offenders driving while intoxicated or impaired by drugs with a child less than 16 years old in the vehicle may be charged with a class E felony, punishable up to 4 years in state prison.

Drivers who drive while intoxicated or impaired by drugs and cause the death of a child less than 16 years of age in the vehicle may be charged with a Class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in State Prison.

Police must report a parent or guardian who is charged with driving while intoxicated or while impaired by alcohol or drugs while their child is a passenger in the vehicle to the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment.

The Downsville Times 5Downsville Central School Celebrates “School Nurse’s Day”

Downsville Central School celebrated School Nurse’s Day on May 8 this year and our own Nurse Sherry received a special award. She was awarded the New York School Nurse’s Association Award for Excellence in School Nursing during this final year of her 31-year career as a school nurse.

Nurse Sherry joined Downsville Central School in 1988 as both the school nurse and attendance officer and she has faithfully served the school community ever since. She will be beginning a much-deserved retirement at the conclusion of this school year and will be leaving a legacy of love and kindness that sets an example of how we should treat each other every day.

The DCS STEM Club had an amazing trip thanks to all their generous supporters. We cannot thank the DCS & surrounding communities enough!

From May 2-7, 2019 the DCS STEM Club traveled to Albuquerque New Mexico to compete in RoboRave North America. RoboRave in itself was an amazing experience for our students. RoboRave stands for Robots Are Very Educational. To say that our students learned a tremendous amount while on this trip would be an understatement. They not only learned about Robotics, but about teamwork, travel, budgeting, history, cultures, Science, Art and problem solving.

While in New Mexico we visited Pueblo ruins & Cliff Dwellings. We tried both New Mexican and Puebuloanian cuisine, toured Old Town Albuquerq, and a modern interac-tive (High Tech) Art Museum. We learned from each other as

well. Alexa read to us in Spanish and helped us to understand what contributions Mexican culture has had on New Mexico. Nate was very informative when it came to insects, lizards and snakes. Others shared their skills by solving puzzles, trouble-shooting our programming and/or our robot builds. Each member of the team played an important role in fundrais-ing, communicating and/or preparing for this competition. We are very proud of their hard work, determination and success.

Our Sumobot teams placed 12th & 14th out of 34 teams and our A-Maze-ing team placed 26th out of 43 teams. This is out-standing considering RoboRave has been taking place in New Mexico since 2001, and there were well over 900 participants with six countries represented. DCS was the only New York State team! Thank you again for helping to make this happen.

Global & Gourmet Foods Class Explores Earth Day Topics

Students took a break in April from their study of regional foods to discuss World and Local Food Challenges in recogni-tion of Earth Day 2019.STUDENTS EXPLORED• The 2019 Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen Lists by the Environmental

Working Group (EWP).• Food Recovery—the movement to fight food waste and hunger

by recovering perishable food that would otherwise go to waste and donating it to those in need.

• Water—Less than 1 percent of freshwater available is for human use, a whopping 70 percent goes toward growing food and raising animals.

• Single-use Plastic Bags—New York’s ban on most single-use plastic bags provided by supermarkets and other stores starting March 1, 2020.

FACTS WE DISCOVERED• The following foods topped the “Dirty Dozen” having had

the most pesticides residue: strawberries, spinach, kale, nec-tarines, apples.

• Foods topping the “Clean Fifteen” list were: avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, frozen sweet peas, onions.

• Half of all the food produced in the USA is wasted between the farm and production.

• It takes 53 gallons of water to make 1 cup of orange juice.• It takes 660 gallons of water to make a hamburger.• The average U.S. diet currently takes more than 1,000 gallons

of water a day to produce.• 16,000 plastic bags are used globally every second.• Only 1-3% of plastic bags are recycled.• The average plastic bag only starts to degrade after 700 years.

For a final project, students were given what one might con-sider “food waste” and asked to create a recipe using at least one “waste”. Items included potato skins, celery ends/leaves, apple peels, stale bread, left-over rice, and pickle juice. This activ-ity challenged students to not think in black and white when it comes to food: either food is edible or it is not. Much of what we consider “waste” isn’t waste at all, simply ingredients that haven’t found the right use.

12 The Downsville TimesMother’s Day Flowers

The pre-k thru 4th grade worked with the high school stem classes to grow sunflow-ers for Mother’s Day. The classes planted 60 sunflower seeds and only 10 grew! We never realized how fast or tall they would grow and quickly learned the concept of compe-tition. The younger students learned about hydroponics, plant growth, and looking at the root systems. Their favorite

part was observing the size of the root systems and getting to transplant the sunflowers to soil. Mothers, we are working on growing smaller flowers to send home before the end of the year.

The Second Grade Class visits the CyberMobile

On Thursday, May 9, the second grade class took a walk to visit the CyberMobile on Main Street and to have a picnic at the covered bridge. The CyberMobile visits Downsville once per month. Visitors can get a free library card and check out books, movies and audio books on CD. The students were given a tour by Miss Sarah, who also read them a story about a librar-ian on a Book Mobile. Driver

Mr. Bill showed the students how the truck works. This activity came after the students studied different ways

that kids around the world get books. For example, in Colombia, children can get books delivered by the “biblioburro”, or traveling library on donkeys. Children in the Appalachian Mountains had books delivered by a woman on horseback. Here in Downsville, we are lucky enough to be visited by the CyberMobile! Hopefully the students can visit with their families this summer and continue reading!

Thank you to Mrs. Sackett for setting up this field trip and joining us for a wonderful time!

The Downsville Times 13Downsville Lions SEE

(Screeening Eyes Early)

Since 2004, the Lions Clubs in New York State have been participating in a special program to screen children for vision problems by identifying the presence of risk factors that can potentioally lead to Amblyopia, commonly referred to a “Lazy Eye”. Amblyopia can result in permanent vision loss, if not treated early. By screening eyes early referrals can be made within an age window where amblyopia can often be treated with a high degree of success. The first few years of a child’s life are critical in the development of good vision. A child’s vision should be checked for the risk factors we screen for so that they can be corrected with therapy or eye glasses.

Members of the Lions Club (Janet Champlin, Dotti Schlaline, and Sherry Becker) came to school and screened the First Program to the 4th grade with the Photo Screener. The automated vision screener is simple and non-intrusive. The screening device, used by a trained Lion, is held approximately 36 inches from the child. The read-ing takes between 1 and 15 seconds at which time the screening is over.

Thanks to the Downsville Lions Club for this great opportunity to help our children.

Thank You Lions Club!

Never TOO Young to Learn About Earth Day

Pictured L to R: Christopher Millien, Weston Reed, Makynzy Jaindl, Emma Erwin, Lydia Fletcher, Mia Odell, and Timothy Barnes

As a way to celebrate Earth Day, our youngest students at D.C.S. collected litter/garbage on the path by the pool and by the Fireman’s Field. Mrs. Reed read a book about “Litter,” and the eager students set out to collect many bags filled with bottles, cans, candy wrappers and more. This is an activity done yearly in the Early Learning Programs during April, with the hope that this Earth conscience lesson is always remembered.

Easter Comes to Pre-KStudents in pre-k enjoyed a bunch of Easter activities, including making

Bunny head bands and enjoying an Easter Egg hunt in the classroom.

14 The Downsville TimesGolf in School Week

Recently, the PE Department welcomed Dylan Thompson, golf pro at Christman’s Windham House, Tom Philion and Jim Lees, instructors at SUNY Delhi’s Golf Management program and several students from the golf management program at SUNY Delhi for our annual golf in school week.

During the last week in April, students in grades K-12 par-ticipated and learned the basic skills of full swing, chipping, putting, safety and etiquette. Mr. Thompson emphasized that golf is an activity that can be played for a lifetime, and you don’t need a lot of people to play it with. Golf team member Steven Brown received the added benefit of additional instruc-tion, and several students were identified as potential players

and encouraged to come out for the golf teams. DCS is merged with Livingston Manor and Roscoe for boys and girls golf, with the home course being Twin Village in Roscoe.

Part of this program includes the use of Stamford Jr. Golf Association’s equipment and the instructors and equipment are rotated through various schools in the Delaware League.

Information on summer golf camps will be handed out to interested students when it becomes available.

Thanks to the SJGA for the use of their equipment and the instructors for volunteering their time and expertise in helping our students learn and enjoy the lifetime sport of golf.
