Bastrop ISD is part of a movement in Texas to work together as educators, parents, students and communities (as well as a handful of enlightened lawmakers) to transform public education in our great state. We are a member of the Texas High Performing Schools Consortium and our School Board has blessed this membership (and hopeful journey) with a resolution showing support for us and hundreds of other school districts in Texas as we work to create an educational environment that is grounded in authentic learning and assessment through innovation, local input, expectation and control. The Consortium districts believe in accountability and understand that assessment (either through proper testing or other forms) is appropriate and necessary. However, as we all witnessed this past session the over-reliance on high-stakes “gotcha” style mandated testing is not the preferred method to appropriately glean how well our students are learning. A group of extremely empowered and persistent parents helped to lead the charge against such testing by convincing lawmakers to diminish the number of STAAR EOC’s (STAAR End of Course exams) by ten during a four year high school career from 15 to 5. We believe that along with on-going assessment of progress by teachers on a daily basis in class, local communities should be able to determine which areas of their respective school districts and schools they deem to be adequate, exemplary or in need of improvement. This is part of HB5, along with the diminished EOC count and other changes that are somewhat promising. We also believe that students (if listened to intently) can provide invaluable input regarding what they feel they need to know to succeed. Students today understand that acquisition of information is at their fingertips. They understand that they are invested in each other and communication is vital to their happiness and their ability to achieve and succeed. They understand that the world they are growing up in (not the world we grew up in) will require a totally different approach educationally. Our job as educators... is to understand, believe and teach (or guide) them in totally different ways going forward.

Transforming our public education system seems quite daunting in some ways, but we must decide and act accordingly. Does this mean that Bastrop ISD will not have their students take state-mandated assessments such as STAAR and STAAR EOC’s? No, we will adhere to state law and policy and have our students do the best they can on these assessments. However, we will not judge (or allow ourselves to be judged) by state-mandated assessment and other Texas accountability standards alone. We know that our students are learning beyond a static amount of test-related information that our teachers wish to teach, guide and care for our students through discovery, authentic learning and assessment and the type of collaborative endeavors we must prepare our young people for in the world economy of today and in the future. That creativity (not assessed through STAAR, etc.) and the ability to acquire information and knowledge (not assessed through STAAR) will serve our students well now and in the future - whether they go to a four or two-year college, trade school, the military or into gainful employment and careers straight out of high school. We will look to ever-increasing partnerships with our parents, students, community members and business leaders to help us become more locally-accountable (rather than just state accountable) and to partner to create new ways of preparing our students for whatever future they desire. Together... we will work to transform public education in Bastrop ISD and in Texas. Thanks, and have a fun, restful and productive summer!

House Bill 5 (HB5), recently passed by the Texas Legislature, has changed graduation requirements for students who will graduate beginning in 2018. This affects current eighth grade students. HB5 gives students options they must consider when designing a Personal Graduation Plan (PGP). With more flexibility in developing a graduation plan comes additional responsibility to meet requirements of the plan. It is important that both students and parents are well informed about the options available prior to confirming the PGP this Spring. In order to help parents and students understand the new PGP, Bastrop ISD will be hosting mandatory parent information meetings. These meetings will provide details pertaining to the new graduation requirements as well as to give participants an opportunity to ask questions. Students will not receive a schedule until PGPs are completed and parent signatures are obtained during these meetings. The Bastrop Middle School/Bastrop High School parent meetings will be held in the cafetorium at Bastrop High School at 6:30 p.m. on the following dates.

• May 28, 2014 (last name A – L)• May 29, 2014 (last name M – Z)• May 30, 2014 (last name A – Z Spanish Session)

BISD is pleased to offer a new address search tool for our stakeholders and business partners. The following link displays the Bastrop ISD attendance zones in Google Maps. According to Chief Operations Officer, Henry Gideon, “As a convenience to our families, this allows users to do an address look-up and view the location in the corresponding attendance zones.” Interested users will need to create a Google account to use this search tool.https://mapsengine.google.com/map edit?mid=zvZ4sSadxXeo.kok3dWtaIG08

About the tool, Gideon further notes that, “while we believe this will be a convenient tool, our stakeholders need to be aware that some address links may not work - particularly obscure and remote locales and in the case of new subdivisions or home developments.” For further attendance zone questions, you may call BISD Transportation at 512.321.5262.

BIsd offers Summer feedinG proGrAm

Bastrop ISD is pleased to announce the availability of summer meals for kids through our Summer Feeding Program. According to Chief Operations Officer, Henry Gideon, “The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), administered by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) was created to ensure that children in low-income areas could continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations when they do not have access to school lunch or breakfast. The program provides nutritious and free meals to all children 18 and younger during the summer months, regardless of income eligibility.” “As in the past,” Gideon continued, “BISD will make meals available to correspond with a variety of summer school and summer recreation programs.” He added, “Children below the age of 18 need not be enrolled in any of BISD’s summer programs to participate…children may simply come to any of the following campus sites at the dates and times advertised to participate in this meal service.”

Advertisements will begin appearing on the sides of Bastrop ISD school buses and in select places across the District in the fall as the result of a recent contract approval by the district’s Board of Trustees. Donald Williams, Executive Director of Community Services/Communications for Bastrop ISD, said the idea was suggested by community members some time ago when BISD was seeking funds to offset state budget cuts. The District used a different marketing firm in the past to promote bus advertisements, but has now solidified a contract with Steep Creek Media LLC (SCM). Residents will likely begin seeing the ads in the fall of 2014. “Placing appropriate advertising on our school buses is part of an overall advertising, public relations and revenue-seeking approach and program that Bastrop started a few years back. We look forward to working with this new marketing firm to help us attract clients who wish to advertise on some of our buses as they travel the 450 square miles that makes up Bastrop ISD’s boundaries. This form of advertising and revenue building has become much more common with school districts in Texas. We will also be working with Steep Creek Media to put together a more comprehensive advertising approach at Memorial Stadium and through the BISD website,” said Steve Murray, Bastrop ISD Superintendent of Schools. The Houston-based advertising and publishing firm will place ads on BISD’s fleet of buses and additionally, the firm will market Bastrop ISD’s website, athletic venues and offer other various advertising options for businesses. According to SCM owner Cynthia Calvert, “The buses are seen predominately within the district, but have the potential to travel far beyond that with sporting events, academic competitions and field trips. This is such a great way for local businesses to publicly state their support of the school district.” “A lot of eyeballs are on those signs,” added Calvert, explaining that ad sizes range from high-visibility signs above bus windows to eye-level signs on the side of a bus. SCM has implemented the program in more than 35 districts including Eanes, Manor, Smithville and Pflugerville. SCM will work with the district to ensure ads are “family-friendly,” and the ads cannot promote religious institutions, tobacco or alcohol, political parties or “businesses that promote body art services,” among other establishments. The district will have the final say on all ads. “The price is very affordable and a wonderful way for the local business community to advertise and help the schools at the same time,” said Williams. “It’s a win-win situation.” Area businesses who wish to advertise on Bastrop ISD school buses, in the District’s newsletter (The Communicator), on the district website or at the stadium can call Steep Creek Media at 281-962-4390.

In coordination with the United States Department of Justice Community Relations Services, Bastrop ISD has initiated an action plan, which will consist of providing diversity and sensitivity trainings starting in May and continuing throughout the summer. BISD has worked closely with Kim Milstead, Conciliation Specialist for the U.S. Department of Justice: Community Relations Service in creating a plan that would offer a means for improving the relationship between concerned citizens of Bastrop, the City of Bastrop and the school district. The trainings are aimed to meet the needs of the diverse and growing population of the Bastrop ISD community. All Bastrop ISD staff will participate in the Culture Competency Training called Drop by Drop. Drop by Drop brings to light how small subtle discrimination and tiny injustices may occur in organizations everyday and how they have the potential to become large problems. Drop by Drop raises awareness and emphasizes the importance of maintaining a thoughtful and respectful workplace while sharing the key concepts for creating an inclusive and productive work environment. Key concepts discussed in the Drop by Drop training for creating an inclusive and productive work environment include consider (listen and empathize), respect (value the talents of each person) and learn (be open to information about different cultures, perspectives).

Ace toWN HaLL meetIngs

We recently held ACE Town Hall meetings to discuss the future of ACE programming in Bastrop ISD. ACE is funded by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grant, which allows us to provide our entire ACE programming for free. The grant is a five-year grant and we are currently in our final year of funding. We had anticipated being able to apply for continued funding through a new 21st CCLC grant. Unfortunately, the Texas Education Agency has decided to not offer any new 21st CCLC funding opportunities for the 2014-2015 school year. This decision is not specific to Bastrop ISD and affects ACE programs throughout the state. Due to this, we will not be able to offer ACE at most campuses next year. For the 2014-2015 school year, ACE will only be offered at Cedar Creek High School and Genesis High School (due to funding from another grant cycle). We know that many of our families have relied upon the services provided by ACE and have enjoyed many wonderful years in the program. We are currently working to identify and create other after school options available for families. We will continue to have STARS after school programming available at all elementary campuses and for intermediate students up to age 13. STARS is our fee-based after school program and is offered throughout the school year until 6:30 each evening. STARS also accepts Child Care Subsidy (CCS) monies. CCS is a program offered through the Texas Workforce Commission that provides financial assistance for child care tuition. Families will need to apply and acceptance into the program is based on a variety of family and financial factors. For more information regarding STARS and/or CCS, please talk with your ACE Site Coordinator or contact the Community Services office at (512)308-1601. We are also working with a number of other community organizations to develop options for all of our students. As other after school options are identified, we will distribute that information as well.

Haley will attend the University of Texas in the fall, in the McCombs School of Business Honor Program, where she plans to major in Business Administration, as well as pre-med. Her goal is to open a Dermatology practice. Emily, the daughter of Mairi and James Boujemaa, impressed both staff and students alike with her intelligence and work ethic. While earning the grades necessary to be her class’s salutatorian, being named a presti-gious Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor recipient, and being an officer in the National Honor Society, Ms. Boujemaa found the time to lead the Bastrop athletics program to new heights. An integral member of the Cross Country Team, eventually its captain, Emily was a three time regional qualifier in cross country, as well as track. Emily embodies the classic ideal of balancing mind and body for true success. When pressed on her secret for success, Emily was very clear. “You have to have a dedicated work ethic; trying your hardest beats natural talent. And the only way to try your hardest is to set high goals. Most important-ly, never settle for less than reaching those high goals. And on a practical level, always find a way to get better. Whether it is studying harder, going to a tutorial, never passing up an opportunity for extra credit, there is al-ways something you can be doing to get better.” Emily will be attending Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX, and plans to major in Animal Behavior while running for their Cross Country and Track teams. These two young ladies are evidence that our future is in good hands.

Team All-District in volleyball. This school year, Slavik was named a Commended Student in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship program. He was also active in numerous activities throughout his high school ca-reer including the CCHS Tennis team, Robotics team, and Chess club. When asked who had a huge impact on their successful high school career, Slavik credits: his teachers, Mr. Thomas Conn and Mr. Kris Laut-enschlager; his family and close friends; and Joelle for keeping him on his toes, academically speaking. “I would have to thank my family for always checking in and asking me how it’s going in my academics, especially my brother, Weston War-nock, since he was the 2005 Bastrop High School Salutatorian. He set the bar high and being the Valedictorian became a goal for me to reach,” says Foster. “I’m also going to miss our student council sponsor, Ms. (Dawn) Vinklarek, and my former volleyball coach, Mr. (Brian) Meyer. Being in-volved in their extra-curricular programs was a great way for me to escape from the pressure of my academics. They were always very supportive.” When asked what advice Foster and Slavik would give to their younger CCHS schoolmates, both agree that it’s beneficial to be open and honest with teachers and that “teachers are people too who want to work with you and help you.” Foster also stresses the idea of staying involved in clubs, organizations, or athletics. “Instead of studying all the time, get out and do something you’re inter-ested in so you don’t get burned out on schoolwork,” she says. “I would say to not be afraid of failure and to go out on a limb and try different things,” adds Slavik. “If you fail, don’t make a big deal about it and just move forward.” Advice that these two successful students will share with their CCHS Class of 2014 on June 5 at Memorial Stadium.

BAstroP Isd congrAtulAtes 2014 tEacHErS of tHE YEar Bastrop ISD made their annual selection of Teachers of the Year for all 14 BISD campuses, including Sunday Thompson as the District Elementary Teacher of the Year and Beth Fox as the District Secondary Teacher of the Year, who were chosen by a panel of judges from the Bastrop community. Thompson and Fox will now be considered as nominees for the Region 13 Teacher of the Year and possibly the Texas Teacher of the Year. Since 1969, the Texas State Teacher of the Year (TOY) Program has honored excellence in classroom education and provided a forum to showcase many outstanding educators whose efforts and example have inspired their students, their colleagues and the communities they serve. Texas Teacher of the Year is the highest honor that the State of Texas can bestow upon a teacher. Facilitated by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA), the Texas Teacher of the Year Program annually recognizes and rewards teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching.

As the 2013-2014 school year comes to a close, Bastrop ISD teachers and students gained access to a unique set of web tools. Teachers and students in grades K-12 can now access YouTube.com/edu, an education specific version of the popular media streaming site. In addition, students in grades 9-12 are now able to view Twitter and Facebook posts from the staff. Access to these web technologies builds on the districts robust bandwidth and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies. The opening of YouTube.com/edu for students provides a location for students to access subject specific content that has been rated and approved for educational use. Content deemed inappropriate or non-educational in nature is not allowed in this protected portion of YouTube. “We wanted to provide students with all the positive elements of YouTube: the how-to videos, documentaries, and first-person research; while keeping non-educational content to a minimum,” said Instructional Technology Director, John Korb, “The YouTube E-D-U pilot is the first step in that direction.” Beyond YouTube access, high school students now have the added option of being able to access Twitter and Facebook. A number of teachers at Bastrop ISD high schools already use these tools to communicate with parents and students. “With BYOD and the addition of these social media tools, teachers will have opportunities for frequent communication with students during the school day in a medium students access on a regular basis,” said Korb. These adjustments came after numerous requests from staff, students, and administrators for more access to these powerful web technologies. By utilizing a pilot program for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year, students and staff will be able to provide feedback on the effectiveness of the tools before the end of the year. Final adjustments will then be made to the districts filtering policy over the summer based on the results of this initial pilot program. The district is eager to see how these tools can be used effectively in the instructional setting.

BISD Teachers and students in grades K-12 can now access YouTube.com/edu, an education specific version of the popular media-streaming site.

Adjustment to Internet filtering policies leads to better utilization of BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology)devices for BISD students.
