A Message from your Head of Year
Year 10
This is the first of two incredibly important years for your son/daughter. The In-crease in the expectations can lead to it being a stressful one too. Each student needs to focus their attention and all their efforts on ensuring they are doing the best they can be. In such a competitive climate each student needs to leave Turn-ford with enough GCSEs to give them the best possible chance of getting where they want to get to.
These two years will pass very quickly and your child will need to ensure they keep up to date in all coursework and controlled assessments to ensure they can achieve their potential. They should also be carrying out exam preparation through the whole of the two years not leaving it to the night before exams.
We want the best from each student, if you feel that they are behind in any subject area then please contact me at [email protected] with your con-cern and we’ll investigate as to what can be done to further support your son/daughter.

What topics are being studied this half term? (Summer Term 1)
What independent learning should my child be completing?
When is this due in?
In what for-mat is this due in?
What support is there to complete this?
English Literature exam To Kill a Mockingbird Students’ English Litera-ture exam represents 40% of their overall GCSE English Literature mark. In June, students will sit an exam testing their analytical skills, their ability to provide evi-dence, interpreting its meaning, and respond to contextual factors. Once completed, stu-dents will move onto studying the second text for their Lit Unit 3 exam: DNA. This is a short play which examines the rela-tionships of a small group of teenagers who have been accused of killing one of their friends. English coursework – Creative writing This covers a range of topics but, importantly, students will be assessed for:
Spelling
Punctuation
Paragraphing
Sentence structure
Vocabulary etc
All teachers will be setting weekly individualized home-work – this will allow your child to receive more personalized tasks based on ability and tar-gets being set in class. Students may wish to watch the film version of To Kill a Mockingbird. Access to the film will not only develop pupil’s general understanding but also encourage them to develop a range of varied interpretations.
The skills used to analyse the-se 2 texts are the same. En-courage students to read as much as possible as this will help to develop their analytical skills and they should also be re-reading the texts to have a robust working knowledge of them prior to the exam.
All teachers will be setting weekly individualized home-work – this will allow your child to receive more personalized tasks based on ability and tar-gets being set in class. Encourage students to read a range of texts and as much as possible at home as this will help to develop sentence struc-ture, paragraphing, vocabulary and narrative structure. Teach-ers have a set of investigative questions which can be used as a reading tool to develop their understanding and analyti-cal skills. Please encourage pupils to read for at least an hour a week. Using their reading as a stimu-lus or, alternatively, films or experiences they have had, write creatively for practice. They might watch a film and then write a review, a newspa-per article about issues it raised, a journal of a character involved, an extra scene etc
Homework is set and collected in weekly. Students need to make a note of their homework in their planners and ensure they collect the right resources during the lesson.
Either hand written or word pro-cessed.
Your child has re-ceived a copy of the success criteria and will be set specific targets on a regular basis to help them achieve their predict-ed grade. They should be able to share this with you.

What is the purpose of the learning tasks?
Home Learning in Maths reinforces the skills and techniques learnt in lessons. It fosters independence
and helps students to assess and evaluate their understanding and progress. Students will be set a
variety of different learning tasks. It is important that students complete these tasks as it will help them
to achieve their aspirational GCSE target grades.
What should my child do if they are struggling with the tasks?
Students will be given at least 3 days to complete any task so they have plenty of opportunity to speak
to their class teacher if they are unsure of what to do or are stuck.
If pupils still feel they need more support for their tasks or any additional GCSE support then they are
welcome to come to an after school surgery or revision session.
How will this terms homework help build learning power?
The GCSE maths curriculum has recently changed to include significantly more ‘functional’ maths.
This means that students are now expected to apply mathematics in a range of contexts and analyse
problems. To do this successfully, they need to be able to make links between the different areas of
the course and reason mathematically. Students must take ownership of their own learning, giving
them the tools to succeed.

THIS IS STUDENTS CON-TROLLED ASSESSMENT UNIT- WORTH 25%. Students controlled assessment is based around a site visit to Oxford Castle on the 2
nd May 2013.
This term is dedicated to teaching, planning, drafting and writing up their controlled assessment essay questions. There are 3 questions to be an-swered worth 8, 12 and 20 marks. An essay response is required of all three and as the marks increase the length and detail is also increased. For independent learning the stu-dents should be researching for their questions, making notes based on their class work and bullet point-ing how they could answer each of the 3 questions. However, THEY MUST NOT write up any answers outside of the classroom.
Students will have completed all three parts of their con-trolled as-sessment by the end of the term. There will be an op-portunity to improve to their target grade if necessary in year 11.
As this is controlled assessment students final work needs to be completed in exam conditions within the classroom.
Students have been allocated class hours in line with the board recommendations. However students will also be advised that they can use their lunches and after schools with the class teacher should they need more time to com-plete their essay questions. If there are any prob-lems students should speak to the class teacher in the first in-stance or Mrs Male the Subject Leader.

1.4: Stereo-typing, preju-dice and dis-crimination Students will learn how ste-reotyping can lead to positive and negative evaluations. They will de-fine the con-cepts of preju-dice and dis-crimination and explore research into prejudice and the link to an authoritarian personality. Students will examine evi-dence support-ing theories of prejudice and discrimination and use these studies to ex-plore how the-se can be re-duced.
Create a psychology glossa-ry.
There are lots of new terms and specialist jargon to learn in psy-chology. Students will create a list of new terms and definitions they need to learn. Star-study sheets. Students need to know some psychological investigations in considerable detail. They will use a ‘star-study’ summary sheet to help them consolidate the Aim, Method, Results, Con-clusion, Evaluation and Practi-cal Applications Investigation of stereotyping. Use a simple questionnaire to investigate commonly held ste-reotypes. Internet / Newspaper re-
search. Find examples of where groups are targets of frustration leading to prejudice. Try to explain why this happens for each group. Investigation of prejudice Design and investigate the ef-fect of prejudice on potential prison sentencing. In group and out group Research the factors that cause people to be labeled as mem-bers of an in-group or out-group.
Visual mapping. Create a visual map of the three aspects of personality you have been learning about. It should involve major features of each explanation, including key words and key studies. Practical applications of per-
sonality research Imagine you are a psychologist working for either a counseling service or the police. Explain how psychological research into antisocial personality disor-der can be used to identify indi-viduals with the disorder.
Homework is set and collected in weekly. Students need to make a note of their homework in their plan-ners and ensure they collect the right re-sources during the lesson.
Either hand written or word pro-cessed.
Task 1 and 2 All: Create some flash cards to help you mem-orise the key terms and investigation details. Extra challenge: Use a visual map and mne-monic techniques to process the new infor-mation. Task 3 All: Use the internet to research the idea that personality type affects likelihood of holding prejudiced views. Extra challenge: Go further and investigate research into the authoritarian personality type online. Task 4 All: Find at least 2 stories. Extra challenge: Find more than one source for each story (e.g. newspaper vs BBC). Examine the differences in the way the story is reported. Task 5 All: Use the notes from the research methods lessons to help you with the investigations. Extra challenge: Consider how the question-naire could be improved to ensure validity. Task 6 All: Research the different groups of people that live in your local community. How many different groups are there? Make a presenta-tion or display about the in-groups and out-groups in your local area. Extra challenge: Use the internet to discover more research into how in-group and out-groups are formed. Task 7 All: Remember to use images and colour-codes to help organise and process the infor-mation. Extra Challenge: Use a cover and copy tech-nique to determine how much of the infor-mation you have retained. Task 8 All: Your report must include reference to at least 3 pieces of research. Your report should be about 250 words long. Extra challenge: You could research online for more studies into antisocial personality disor-der and include one or two more studies into your report. If you do this you are allowed to write up to 300 words. Use the advice sheet regarding SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation, Apostrophes and Gram-mar) and the help sheet on reporting experi-ments, analyzing text and writing evaluations in psychology.

Controlled Assessment: The Research Task worth -20% of the final grade. The aim of the research task is to use a combination of primary and secondary research methods to evaluate a specific chosen area of child development. Students will be directed towards a specific research task given by the AQA examination board.
1. The set Research Task should
be analysed to show understanding
of its importance and relevance
within a wider context.
(Planning should try to cover what needs to be researched why it is im-portant and how the information will be found). Plan how you are going to gather research for your chosen re-search task, are you going to carry out a survey, or interview?
Also- how are you going to present your research, are you going to use pie graphs or transcripts of interviews? Make it realistic – you only have a limited time. Don’t say you are going to conduct a questionnaire and analyse this of 100 people for example.
3. Carry out your secondary research
on the chosen Research Task. Use a variety of sources such as the internet; mother and baby magazines; relevant leaflets and advice for mothers; your text books.
4. Carry out your primary research
and keep a record of your findings. This may be an interview, observation or survey. Evaluate your leaflet (final outcome) was it successful? Get a parent or older sibling/relative/friend to comment on the positives and negatives. Write about their reaction in your evaluation. How would you produce the leaflet differently if you had to do this again?
Either hand written or word processed.
Child Development Controlled Assessment Support Session-Miss Cresswell is holding regular support sessions for students after school on a Wednesday. Child Development Coursework guide/work book given to you by your class teacher has invalua-ble advice and guidance about how to plan and structure your Child Study. Your teacher will provide you with a detailed guide on how to complete each part of the controlled assessment.

ICT
Below are the homeworks I will be setting throughout the year. There is no particular order in
which these are set as all three modules are running concurrently. Instead students are told
which homework is relevant to them at the time of undertaking a task or the nearing completion
of one. For this reason homework is not set as a regular whole class activity, but rather tailored to
the needs of the individual at the time.
Unit 1 – Homework List:
Students research health and safety procedures using ICT equipment
Students to produce document on copyright and the legislation surrounding it.
Take screenshots of saving links to bookmarks
Students to bring in one travel brochure and flyer
Complete business card design at home in addition to all A04 design tasks
Find out what spread sheets do and their purpose, three real world examples to be researched
Find out what a database is used for, bringing in real world examples
