    Theres an Easy and Inexpensive

Way to Replace a Worn-Out LawnZoysia grass plugs can be planted into existing lawn

Teres nothing quite as inviting as a lushgreen lawn, beckoning like a cool oasis in

the midst o summertime heat. O course, having a perect lawn thats the envy o theneighborhood doesnt just happen by chance.A gol-course-quality lawn typically requireslots o springtime work (and expense) oroverseeding, ertilizing and weed control. Andthen theres moving, mowing and more mowingthroughout the growing season.

I youre looking or a way to energize yourtired lawn but want to save time and money, the answer could be as simple as zoysia

grass. Rather than ripping out an old lawnor reseeding over it, many thousands ohomeowners have planted zoysia grass plugsright into their existing lawns. Zoysia grass isa tough, spreading turgrass that grows into apermanent, perennial lawn that never needsreseeding.

Zoysia grass is a great choice or anyonewho loves the look o a lush, healthy lawn butdoesnt want to be a slave to their lawn, saidJohn Ridgway o Zoysia Farm Nurseries (www.

zoysiaarms.com/tca) in aneytown, Md.Most common turgrasses, such as Kentuckybluegrass and tall escue, are cool seasongrasses that look ne in the spring and late allbut get stressed in the summer months whenyou want your lawn to look its best. However, zoysia grass is a warm season grass that thrivesin summer heat and needs ar less water duringthe growing season. Zoysia grass also needs lessmowing than most other types o grasses, so itsmuch less labor intensive.

Unlike other grasses, which are grown romseed or installed as sod, the zoysia grass rom

Zoysia Farm Nurseries (sold under the productname Amazoy) is sold as individual plants.Tese zoysia grass plugs can be planted intobare ground or in areas where the existing lawnis thin or worn out.

Amazoy zoysia grass plugs quickly send outstolons (above-ground sprouts) and rhizomes(underground creeping rootstalks) rom whichnew plants take root. Te densely growingzoysia grass spreads outward, choking out allother growth -- including existing turgrasses,

crabgrass and other summer weeds. Withintwo to three growing seasons in most climates, the grass plugs will spread to completely coverthe lawn area. Te result is a durable lawn thatcan handle playground punishment, summerheat and drought while still looking green andeeling plush -- just like a gol course.

In areas that get rost, zoysia grass quietly goesdormant and stops growing. It needs no care ormaintenance during the cold months. Zoysiagrass is cold tolerant, surviving temperatures

as low as -30 degrees Fahrenheit. When theweather warms up again the ollowing spring, zoysia grass regains its natural green color andstarts growing again.

Amazoy zoysia grass is available by mail directrom the grower (www.zoysiaarms.com/tca). An order o 1,000 plugs (enough or a1,000-square-oot lawn) and plugger plantingtools sell or approximately $50 -- a small priceto pay or a lush, proessional looking lawn year

    afer year!

Zoysia grass lawns are a good choice or anyone who wants a low maintenance, lush lawn that stays green in summer heat anddroughts. Zoysia is durable, spreading turgrass that grows into a permanent lawn that never needs reseeding.

Outdoor Activities Ideal for SpringOnce winter has come and gone, adultsand children alike are typically anxious

to get outside and soak up some springsun. Few things are as rejuvenating asthose rst ew spring days, when the harshwinter weather is instantly orgotten andthe smell o resh grass is comortablyoverwhelming.

When saying so long to cabin ever thisspring, consider the ollowing outdooractivities that are sure to put a spring inyour step.

Golany gol courses re-open in the spring.ough some public courses stay open

throughout the winter, the majorityo courses do close once the weatherbecomes too unbearable or golers toendure or too detrimental to the courseslandscape. Depending on how harsh thewinter was and the orecast or spring, gol courses typically re-open their links

as early as the rst week o March. Even iyour avorite course doesnt open quicklyenough, you can still dust o your swingwith a visit to the local driving range.

    Fish

any shermen eel like shing seasonnever ends, choosing to simply addanother layer o clothing when thetemperatures drop rather than pack itup and wait till spring. For the hobbyist,

however, spring is typically a time to nda avorite shing hole and get back tobusiness. How successul a shing trip willbe typically depends on a host o actors, including water temperature. Ofentimes, the local newspaper will list the watertemperature o the areas avorite shingareas. Once nature decides to cooperate, get outside and enjoy the rst catch o theseason.

Cyclingerhaps thanks to seven-time our de

France winner Lance Armstrong, cyclinghas grown increasingly popular statesidein the 21st century. Many communitieshave cycling groups or riders o varyingskill levels, and such groups typicallyhit the pavement once the spring seasonarrives. When joining a group, be sure tooin one thats suited to your skill level. I

cycling alone, be patient at the beginning

and dont stra too ar Remember oull

    Join a Sports League

Adults can relive the days o their youthby signing up to play in a local sportsleague. Such leagues are ofen ideal oryoung singles, who can team up withellow young people to play any number osports, including sofball, beach volleyball, basketball, and even the old standby oelementary school, kickball.

RunWinter can test even the most devoted orunners. For those who simply cant runin the throes o winter, when snow andice cover the roadways, spring is the rstchance to get back outdoors and run inthe resh air. Local road runner clubs are agreat opportunity to meet ellow runnersor learn o local competitions. Whenrunning, be sure to bring along some gear

to keep you relatively dry should thoseinevitable spring showers arrive.

Golers typically cant wait or the rst warm day o spring so they can return to the local

Protect pets through the dog days of summerWhen the warm weather arrives, conscientious

pet owners typically reevaluate how to care or theirpets. As the seasons change, so may a pets needs, anddierent saety precautions might be necessary.

Warm weather seasons are many peoplesavorite time o year. Pets, too, enjoy the benets othe warm weather, including more opportunities to

rolic outside. But the sunshine and hot weather thatis synonymous with the summer season can provetreacherous to some pets.

Although the hot-weather months aresometimes called the dog days o summer, thatdoesnt mean that your dog enjoys them. Accordingto Dogs in Antiquity: Anubis to Cerebrus: TeOrigins o the Domestic Dog, by Douglas Brewer,Sir erence Clark, and Adrian Phillips, the term dogdays o summer was coined by the ancient Greeksand Romans actually to describe the hottest days osummer that coincided with the rising o the DogStar, Sirius. It has nothing to do with dogs loving thesummer. So keep in mind your pooch and other pets

may not be acclimated to hot weather and may sueror it.Dogs, cats and small animals who are le

inside a hot car, even i just or a ew minutes, canbe susceptible to heat-related illness and even death.Dogs are particularly vulnerable to the heat becausethey can only cool o by panting and through thesweat glands in the pads o their eet.

Animal cruelty laws apply to just about anyonewho endangers their animals lie through negligence.Failure to take weather conditions into considerationmay be a criminal act, depending on where a petowner lives.

    o avoid heat-related injury to a companion

animal, keep these tips in mind.* Even on a day that seems mild, an enclosed car

can reach deadly temperatures. A Stanord Universitystudy ound that even when it was a mere 72 Foutdoors, the interior temperature o a car reached116 F within one hour. Research urther indicatedthat cracking the windows o the car had little eecton lowering the internal temperature o the vehicle.

    * Pets generally have a higher body temperature

than people. A dogs normal body temperature, orexample, is between 101 to 1 02.5 F. Being outsidein the heat or locked inside a hot room can quicklybring that body temperature up. Nerve damage, liverdamage, heart problems, and even death can occur ia dogs body temperature rises just a little bit.

    * It is important to provide pets with extra water,as they may be more thirsty when it is hot outdoors.I you will be spending a day away rom home, leaveone or two bowls o water available and put in a ewice cubes, which will help keep the water cooler.

    * I your pet is outdoors, make sure he hasplenty o access to shady areas in which to rest. Achilds wading pool c an provide a respite rom the

heat as well.* Avoid walks and daily exercise during thehottest parts o the day. ry to reschedule these orearly morning or early evening when things generallycool down. Remember, pavement and sidewalks c anbe very hot and burn the delicate pads o the eet.

    * Discuss pet sunscreen products with aveterinarian. Animals with short hair or with whiteur and pink skin may be more susceptible tosunburn and damage rom potentially harmul UVrays.

    * Be mindul o open windows and pet birds. Itcan be easy or birds to escape when a window is leopen in the house, especially i your birds are given

daily exercise outside o the cage. On another note, keep in mind that glass is virtually invisible to birds,

and wild birds may collide with glass i windowsare kept shut while the air conditioning is on. Glassreects the images o t rees, bushes and the sky, so abird may y directly into it. Te United States. Fishand Wildlie Service oers that one o the greatesthazards to birds is plate glass, with windows inhomes and ofces killing as many as one billion birds

each year.* Stay up-to-date with vaccinations, as bitinginsects, such as mosquitoes, ticks and ies, are moreprevalent this time o year and can transmit diseases.

    * Avoid toxic gardening products i you andyour pet requently spend time in the yard.

    * Dont assume your dog knows how to doggiepaddle. Despite the name, not all pups have masteredthis method o staying aoat. Keep in mind an

unattended dog can drown.Te warm-weather season is one in which

people enjoy lounging outdoors and soaking up somesun. You can ensure your pets enjoy it, too, by takingprecautions and other saety measures.

    Clean patio furniture thegreen way

Despite a mild winter or much o the country, many people are looking orward to dusting othe patio urniture and heading outside to enjoy

the warmer weather thats on its way.

I only it was as easy as that. Very oen decks, patios and outdoor urniture need a little morethan a quick clean-up to get them ready or theseason. oo oen people turn to harsh chemicalsthat, when washed away, can end up leaching intothe surrounding ground and potentially the watersupply. Tere are more environmentally riendlyoptions available to get outdoor items prepped orentertaining.

Tose who have kids and pets or who are just

interested in living an eco-riendly liestyle, maywonder how to make patio urniture look likenew without resorting to harsh chemical cleansersto do the job. Although it may take a little moreelbow grease to do it the green way, here are sometips or cleaning up.

    * Head into the kitchen. People are oen surprisedto nd they have some o the most versatilecleaning products in their cabinets and possiblyeven the rerigerators. Baking soda, vinegar andlemon juice are good cleansers to try on stubbornstains. Baking soda mixed with a little vinegarwill create a oaming action that can help breakthrough stains. Vinegar on its own is a naturaldeodorizer and can clean chrome and glasswithout leaving behind streaks. Baking sodamixed with a little water can be used as a scouringpaste applied with a sti-bristled brush, and it haseven been shown to remove rust stains on somemetal suraces. Te acidity o lemon juice can helpcut through oily messes and gummy substances.

    * Put some pressure behind the cleaning.Dont underestimate the power o plain water

especially i its being directed at dirt at a high

velocity. Pressure washers are ideal or cleaningo mold, mildew and even lea and bug stainsrom many suraces, including concrete. Set the

power washer at an acceptable spray size because,i its too concentrated, the spray can cause otherdamage.

    * Get steamed or cleaning. Steam is a popular andgreen method o cleaning indoor foors, countersand other suraces. Steam can also be tried onresin urniture or other materials to loosen debris, enabling the dirt to be wiped o with little elbowgrease. Steam can also disinect suraces withoutthe need or chemicals.

    * Look or green cleaning products. For those who

preer the power o a spray-bottle, select productsthat have been approved or use by notableenvironmental agencies. Tese cleaning items willbe ree rom damaging ingredients. Just be sureto check the ingredient list beore making anypurchases.

    * Bleach it. Diluted bleach is one o the mosteective cleaning and disinecting combinationsaround. Because bleach is an organic chemical,it can be introduced back into the environmentwithout doing much damage, provided it issubstantially diluted. Check the color-astnesso the materials that will be cleaned in aninconspicuous spot prior to doing the wholesurace.

    * Cover it. Sometimes the stains are so set in thatthey are not able to be scoured clean. In suchinstances, consider the use o eco-riendly abricsto cover patio urniture upholstery. In addition, look or green paints that can be used to go overmetal and even plastic urniture or a new look.

Get set or the season o entertaining by prepping

outdoor items in an environmentally riendly way

Tere are many diferent environmentally riendly methods or cleaning patios and urniture.
