ISSUE 8 TERM 4 6 November 2013

It seems hard to believe that we are already ½ way through Term 4. At the blink of an eye, it will be Christmas. This is an extremely busy time of year for both our students and staff. Students are well into the examination and assessment period and staff, are hard at work assessing, marking and reporting. However for students the school work continues even after the examinations. The 12 Graduation Ceremony On Friday 20th September 2013, Glenwood High School bid farewell to Year 12 at the Graduation Ceremony. This is a time when Year 12 acknowledge, how quickly the years have slipped by from the time they arrive in Year 7. This year saw many cheers, tears hugs and kisses from a packed out audience. We are very proud of all our Year 12 student achievements.

A special thank you must go to the Year 12 Year Adviser, Mr Tom Nichols, the Assistant Year Adviser, Ms Christine Morrisey, Head Teacher Science, Mrs Tina Hosen, Head Teacher Senior Studies, Ms Cherie Harris, SASS member, Mrs Laura Gleeson, for organising a most memorable occasion for Year 12 and their families and friends. Early this Term, Year 11 students and their parents had the opportunity to sit in on a presentation by Margot Braithewaite from the Board of Studies (BOS) and Mr Mark Sutton, Deputy Principal. This presentation detailed how the HSC works and gave options on how to apply for University and TAFE. It also assisted Year 11 to begin to prepare for the HSC. Year 10 the end of stage five is approaching In the next few weeks Year 10 will need to complete all examinations and assessments in order to meet course requirements and be eligible to proceed to stage six studies and commence Year 11. Year 10 students will also have the opportunity over the up and coming weeks to participate in work experience and the ‘Australian Business Week’ program. Both of these experiences give skills and understandings, commitment to tasks, organisation and management skills that not only help in the future but assist with senior studies. I would encourage all to participate in such worthwhile programs.

NAPLAN Results All parents of Year 7 and Year 9 have received the results for the 2013 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy. These were given to students to deliver to parents towards the end of last term so if any parents did not receive these results please contact the school. We are very pleased with this year’s results, which indicate continued growth in both Literacy and Numeracy. Although NAPLAN is only one measure of student ability the results give teachers valuable data to inform future programming. If you wish to discuss these results please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

2014 School Leadership On the 6th of November 2013, we will be holding the Induction Ceremony for the 2014 School Leadership teams. This is the first year that we have chosen to celebrate the induction of our Captains and Prefects, House captains and SRC together. The number of students who undertake these very important roles is a testament of the great leadership skills amongst our students. We are very proud of all the young men and women who chose to stand for a role as a school leader. Whether they were successful or not, it is a mark of their integrity and determination to make a difference to the lives of others. Congratulations to all who nominated and all who were selected within each of these teams.

Captains and Prefects: Once again our student body have elected a wonderful group of senior students to represent them and the school in a range of capacities. Our elected Captains and prefects are exemplary role models and diplomats for our school, a very prestigious position. It gives me great pleasure to announce the School Captains and elected Prefects for 2014. Diyaa Rajbhandari Year 7, Charlotte Dawson Year 7, Ashleigh Grech Year 7, Kiara Whitton Year 7- These four young ladies competed in the Power House Physics competition. This was an open aged event and so their competeors were much older and from a range of both private and comprehensive schools. They achieved finalists and then went through to be awarded runners up. We would think that they will select to study physics in the future as they have already demonstrated the aptitude. Steven Jessep Year 12 and Emma Lakeman Year 12 – presented a Sydney West Secondary Sports award for outstanding achievement in 2013. Bush fire appeal: Due to the devastating fires recently many people lost homes and all their belongings. Glenwood High School student Volunteers are appealing for donations of children’s toys and books to give as Christmas gifts and to restock Pre-school centres. If you would like to donate a new toy please send it in to the front office or library. The student volunteers will wrap and label. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

MADDNESS: Tuesday 5th November saw us celebrate the creative and performing talents of our students. Artworks were exhibited in a range of mediums from painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. Audiences were then entertained by amazing performances in Drama and Dance. This annual event was once again a great success and showcased the broad skills, abilities and talents of our Creative and performing Arts students. A big thank you to the CAPA faculty for making this event possible. Till next time - Belinda Young

FROM THE DESKS OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS “I always thought the idea of education was to learn to think for yourself.”

(John Keating, Dead Poet’s Society)

We are almost at the end of another successful year at Glenwood High School. We recently

farewelled our latest group of Year 12 students and wish them all the best for their future

endeavours. The deputy principals would like to thank staff, students and parents for their efforts

in making our school the school of choice in this area, as we continue to build our reputation for

excellence. School staff are busily preparing for 2014, including the implementation of the new

Australian Curriculum in most core subjects for Year 7 and Year 9. The Australian Curriculum

focuses on the following general capabilities and provides an exciting opportunity for us to focus on

modifying our teaching and learning programs:

literacy

numeracy

ICT

critical and creative thinking

personal and social capability

ethical behaviour

intercultural understanding

Teachers at our school recently attended a Saturday school conference which focused on quality

assessment and the implementation of the Australian Curriculum. Our teachers are working

extremely hard to ensure that students experience engaging lessons when the new Australian

Curriculum is implemented in 2014.

Grade Updates

Year 7 are coming to the end of their first successful year of high school. They are to be

congratulated for settling into the routines of high school and are working well as a group. This

cohort will have an important role in modelling behaviour and expectations for those students

currently in Year 6 who will be joining our school in 2014.

Year 8 will receive their subject confirmation sheets soon, specifying the electives they have been

enrolled in for 2014. Students will complete three electives courses, however, students who are

completing the Accelerated Mathematics course will complete two electives in addition to this

course. Earlier in the year, students were given advice in relation to choosing electives. Students

who wish to change their elective courses should see Mr Sutton immediately as positions are

limited in some subjects.

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Year 9 are now halfway through their Stage 5 studies and need to ensure all of their assessment tasks are completed before the end of the year. Students in this cohort are studying under the new Record of School Achievement (RoSA), which requires students to satisfactorily complete their Stage 5 studies before they are issued with a credential from the NSW Board of Studies. This is the time for Year 9 students to practise good habits by studying hard for their examinations and ensuring they start next year with all assessment tasks from this year completed.

Year 10 students have a number of important activities in the second half of Term 4. Students will

complete final examinations from Monday, 11 November 2013 to Friday, 15 November 2013. Year

10 will also participate in Australian Business Week (ABW) from Monday, 25 November 2013 to

Friday, 29 November 2013. The cost of ABW is $75 and provides students with a wonderfully

engaging opportunity to simulate running a business through the use of creativity, marketing and

design skills. Students always enjoy participating in ABW and we look forward to viewing student

presentations at the end of the program. Year 10 students will then participate in work experience

from Monday, 2 December 2013 to Friday, 13 December 2013. Year 10 will then attend school as

normal until the end of the year.

Year 11 students have just commenced HSC courses and attended an information session held in

the first week of Term 4 where they heard from a representative from the NSW Board of Studies.

Students are reminded to submit their complete pink and dark blue forms to the front office to

ensure we have all of their paperwork for the HSC. Parents are reminded that it is school policy

that students maintain 12 units of study for the HSC unless special permission is received from the

school. Academic research conducted by the NSW Board of Studies indicates that students who

complete 12 units of study achieve better overall results.

Year 12 students are now finishing their last HSC examinations and are to be commended for their

dedication and commitment. We look forward to the release of their results on Wednesday, 18

December 2013.

Assessment Issues

If a student in Year 9 to Year 12 is absent for an assessment task, they must contact the relevant

deputy principal as soon as possible and provide a medical certificate for the absence and/or other

documentation justifying the absence. This is particularly important for Year 11 students who have

just commenced their HSC courses. From this point onwards, all assessment tasks for Year 11

contribute to the overall calculation of the student’s final rank and mark that is submitted to the

NSW Board of Studies. The school’s assessment policy was recently emailed to all Year 11

students at the commencement of their HSC courses and can be downloaded from the school’s

website: http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/years/year-12/assessment-booklet

It is important that all students in all grades familiarise themselves with these rules and follow

them. It is expected that students know these rules. In particular, we would like to draw attention

to the following rule:

Students are solely responsible for maintaining backups of all personal data files,

independently of the school’s computers and network. Students should save their files in

multiple locations including emailing themselves or saving documents in ‘cloud’ services.

It is unacceptable for a student to cite technological failure as a reason for an appeal when

the student could have saved their work in other locations. (page 21).

Page 7: Home - Glenwood High School - THE REDGUMTHE REDGUM...GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL ISSUE 8 TERM 4 6 November 2013 It seems hard to believe that we are already ½ way through Term 4. At the

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Otherwise, students may receive a zero mark and these marks may not contribute to the student’s

overall HSC mark submitted to the NSW Board of Studies.

Arriving At and Leaving School

The school has recently received some reports of students coming to school in an unsafe manner

by simply crossing the road without looking for cars. It is easy to become complacent and students

(especially those who are listening to music) need to check carefully before crossing the road.

There are pedestrian crossings near the school to help students arrive safely at school. There are

also some ‘refuge islands’ near the school, but students need to be aware that they do not have

the right of way when crossing the road at a ‘refuge island’. We all want to see students arrive at

school safely and return home again to their families at the end of the day. It may be timely for

parents to remind their children to be careful in this regard.

In addition, when students leave home to come to school, they are expected to come directly to

school. This means that students should not play games in the park before school, as these are

unsupervised activities. It is for the safety of all students that when they are coming to school, they

come directly to school and wait for their first class inside the school gates.

Year 11 students are reminded that they have been granted special leave on Wednesday

afternoons to engage in home study. As HSC students, they have a significant amount of

homework, assessment tasks and study to complete at home. This means that Year 11 students

must not use Wednesday afternoons for any purpose other than home study.

Very soon, Year 11 students will receive the school’s student driver policy. As some Year 11

students receive their P-plate licenses in the coming months, it is important for senior students to

understand our expectations with regard to driving to school. Students are only allowed to drive to

school with the permission of the Principal. In addition, students are only allowed to drive others to

school with the permission of the Principal, and this will only be granted in special circumstances.

Students are not permitted to park on school premises or in the daycare centre carpark or their car

may be towed at their own expense. These rules and procedures are to ensure the safety of

students and will be explained to Year 11 at a grade meeting. Parents who are interested in

obtaining a copy of the student driver policy should contact Mr Sutton.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Glenwood High School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. As a PBL school, we

choose to focus on rewarding positive behaviour in order to create an effective learning

environment. At Glenwood High School, we use the following core values to guide all aspects of

our teaching and learning:

respect for others, self and property

responsibility for actions

ready for learning

These core values provide a strong basis for positive interactions between staff and students. We

are in the process of reviewing our school’s merit system to ensure that it caters to the needs of

students and provides opportunities for students to be rewarded for following our core values.

Page 8: Home - Glenwood High School - THE REDGUMTHE REDGUM...GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL ISSUE 8 TERM 4 6 November 2013 It seems hard to believe that we are already ½ way through Term 4. At the

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

In addition, we are currently trialling a number of additional programs including ‘Check In, Check

Out’, which is a research-based program that helps students improve their behaviour by meeting

with a staff member at the start and end of each day, reflecting on their goals for the day. It is

great to see so many students being rewarded for their commitment to PBL.

Banned Items

Glenwood High School maintains a ‘banned items list’ to ensure that the school remains a safe

environment for all. For the safety of others, their property and school property, under no

circumstances are students to bring the following items to school:

chewing gum

permanent markers

ring pull cans (ie, salmon/tuna tins, etc)

liquid paper

aerosol deodorants

aerosol cans of any description

skateboards

scooters

laser lights

metal rulers

cigarettes

lighters

matches

imitation guns or weapons

illegal items (eg, weapons, drugs, drug paraphernalia, etc)

inappropriate or offensive material

‘V’ drinks or highly caffeinated beverages

medication of any kind (unless registered with the front office)

‘deep heat’ or similar products

We appreciate the support of parents in this regard.

Communication with Parents

Glenwood High School is a very large school and we have a Facebook page to help us

communicate with both parents and students. This can be accessed at:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Glenwood-High-School-NSW/159488217454512

We presently have almost 1100 ‘likes’ and this continues to grow each week. Our Facebook page

is an excellent source of information for reminders about activities, excursions, examination

timetables, parent evenings and office announcements. It is also an excellent showcase

demonstrating what a remarkable school we have, evidenced by the achievements of our students

in cultural endeavours, on the sporting field and in the classroom.

Uniform

Glenwood High School is proudly a uniform school and we expect that all students will show pride

in their appearance and dress in the correct school uniform each day. By doing so, students

indicate to their teachers that they are ‘ready for learning’ and have the right mindset for learning.

We are readying students to be successful members of the workforce and their future occupations

may require them to adhere to a uniform code or dress code. The school website has detailed

information on the school’s uniform policy:

http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/rules-policies/uniform-policy

In particular, our website has images of approved and non-approved shoes to assist parents in

purchasing appropriate footwear. The following are not acceptable forms of footwear and must not

be worn to school:

The school closely monitor the wearing of the school uniform. We ask parents to assist this process by ensuring that their child is wearing the school uniform. Girls are reminded that skirts are worn in Term 1 and Term 4 (pants are not permitted).

Page 10: Home - Glenwood High School - THE REDGUMTHE REDGUM...GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL ISSUE 8 TERM 4 6 November 2013 It seems hard to believe that we are already ½ way through Term 4. At the

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

All students know that even when they have sport or PD/H/PE practical classes, they are still

required to arrive at school in the normal school uniform and then change during the day. In

particular, it is important that senior students model the correct wearing of the school uniform for

junior students. We have an extremely high rate of compliance with the school uniform policy and

those who need to improve in this area are encouraged to wear the correct uniform in a number of

ways. It is fantastic to work in a school where students have an appearance which shows they are

‘ready for learning’.

Finally, we recently had a potentially serious incident with a tree in the playground that was in

danger of falling. It was due to the sensible efforts of Matthew Hurley (Year 8) who heard the tree

cracking and notified our school support staff. This resulted in the school immediately contacting

the State Emergency Services, isolating the area and then having the tree removed straight away.

Matthew is to be commended for his commitment to the safety of everyone at school and it is

pleasing to see that students take it upon themselves to show care for their fellow students and

staff.

Glenwood High School is enjoying another fantastic year. We look forward to continuing our

commitment to delivering quality teaching for the rest of 2013 and into 2014. Until next time,

Important Update regarding Anaphylaxis

IF YOUR CHILD HAS ANAPHYLAXIS

SHOULD HE OR SHE CARRY THEIR OWN EPIPEN® OR ANAPEN®

TO AND AT SCHOOL?

What is this article about?

If you have told the school that your child is diagnosed a risk of anaphylaxis you should have

received a letter from Mrs E. McMaster, Principal /Ms B. Young, Rel. Principal.

This article provides more information about anaphylaxis.

What is an EpiPen® and an Anapen®?

EpiPen® and Anapens® are the emergency treatment for children who are having an anaphylactic reaction.

What is anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe and sometimes sudden allergic reaction. If your child has been diagnosed by a doctor as being at risk of anaphylaxis there are some important things to remember that will help the school to support your child’s health care needs.

Why you need to keep us informed if your child is diagnosed as being at risk of anaphylaxis or if his or her condition changes. This includes if they have an anaphylactic reaction while

not at school.

The school can only respond to risks it knows about. Please keep the school informed by sending us the information or calling Mrs Achar on 9629 9577 so that we can plan to support your child at school.

Why you need to provide the school with your child’s current ASCIA Action Plan for

Anaphylaxis and an EpiPen® or Anapen® signed by their doctor

The plan sets out the steps the school needs to follow in an emergency. It is essential for us to have this to keep your child safe.

We will keep a copy of your child’s ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis stored with your child’s EpiPen® or Anapen®.

Why it is important to talk regularly with your child about some simple steps to help keep

them safe

It is important to regularly talk with your child about when and where they are at risk of contact with the things they are allergic to and how to avoid this. If you have told them not to take part in sharing food at school, regularly remind them of this.

Reassure them that if they do come into contact with something they are allergic to or they feel

unwell at school they won’t get into trouble. They need to tell a teacher immediately.

their

Why does the school need to know if your son or daughter is carrying their own EpiPen® or

Anapen®?

Staff need to know your child carries an EpiPen® or Anapen® in an emergency. For this reason this information will be included in your child’s individual health care plan.

They also need to be able to find it quickly so it is important that it be in an easily identifiable and accessible spot. (e.g. not a locker). `To find out more go to the Department’s public schools website: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/studentsupport/studenthealth/conditions/anaphylaxis/index.php

Consider whether your child should carry their own EpiPen® or Anapen®

If your child has been diagnosed with anaphylaxis they can carry their own EpiPen® or Anapen® to school and at school. The forms we sent home recently included a section regarding this. Please inform the school if you haven’t done so already about whether your child carries an epipen or not.

If you request that your child carry an EpiPen® or Anapen® with them to school and at school you will still need to provide the school with at least one additional EpiPen® or Anapen® for storage in a central location within the school and for access by staff in an emergency.

The school will contact you about any request you make for your son or daughter to carry their own EpiPen® or Anapen®.

CAREER UPDATE

Year 9 students going into Year 10 in 2014 can start thinking about where they would like to organise work experience for 2014. If you are interested in working in a hospital applications are now open by the Western Sydney Local Health District for students who would like to experience Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pathology or Dental. All applications must to be submitted this year before December. There are limited positions for each area and late applications will not be accepted. For an application form please see the Career

Dear Parent/Caregiver

New Medical Forms Policy

During Terms 3 and 4 the Department of Education and Communities is introducing a new medical recording system. All schools are required to update their medical records to ensure they have the most up-to-date information on your child’s health.

The new forms help us collect your child’s important medical information, and the introduction of new systems will mean we will be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child.

These forms have already been sent to the parents of students that have indicated to us that they have a health/medical condition noted on our files. If you did not receive a letter and medical form for completion and your child does have a health/medical condition, could you please complete the attached Medical Form and forward to the front office. Please ensure that you attach a current Action Plan signed by your child’s doctor if your child’s medical condition is of a high risk nature.

When completing these forms we ask that you take care to answer every question, be accurate

and write legibly.

If your child has an allergy condition there are eleven (11) questions, if your child has other medical conditions there are seven (7) questions. If your child’s condition relates to allergy and other medical conditions, all questions must be answered in full. A current action plan signed by your child’s doctor must be attached, if required.

Please complete and return these forms as soon as possible.

Forms can be delivered to the front office or alternatively you can return the forms by mail.

We appreciate your support as we start collecting the information, and if you have any questions please call us on 9629 9577.

Yours sincerely

Ms B Young

The school wishes to inform all parents/carers that from Monday

11th February, 2013 the exact cash is required when paying for

excursions and accounts. In the past, the giving and collection of

change for such payments has caused undue stress and confusion

for both staff and students. The school is most happy to accept

payment by cheque or credit card for all expenses.

Eftpos Facility Due to the financial cost of the use of the Eftpos facility the policy of a

$10.00 minimum charge will remain.

LATE, ABSENT OR LEAVING EARLY NOTES

Notes are required from Parent / Guardian to explain reasons for lateness, absence or leaving

early. Please ensure your child’s full name and year is clearly written on the note.

If a student does not produce a note for lateness a detention will be issued for that day.

ALL notes are required to be handed in at Student Reception at the beginning of the day to enable

a pass to be issued to the student and for the details to be noted in the system to avoid a truancy

note being issued.

OUR NEXT P & C MEETING will be held on 4 December, 2013 in the Conference Room.

Please come along and join us 7.00pm start.

P & C MEETING DATES 2013:

The Parents & Citizens Association at Glenwood High School aims to provide a forum to promote communication and co-operation between the school and its community.

The objective of our association is to promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, pupils and teaching staff into close co-operation.

The P&C meets regularly for members of our school community to receive information, discuss issues, contribute ideas and give feedback to the School Executive.

We meet on the first Wednesday of the month (excluding holidays) at 7pm in the conference room at the school.

Our fantastic Duke of Edinburgh group have transformed this bare patch

of grass into an amazing garden feature under our flag poles. The

students worked very hard each afternoon during sport. Well done guys,

job well done.
