21 introducing the PetesHalf Season Ticket

OFFICIAL GAMEDAY PROGRAM PAGE 5 PAGE 4 OFFICIAL GAMEDAY PROGRAM

The Petes play only one game this weekend, and it’s a rematch against the streaking Soo Greyhounds on Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Puck drop is set for 7:05pm against the Hounds. The cross-conference foes only play eachother twice this season, and the games are scheduled just five days apart, as the Petes visited the Algoma region on Saturday night for the tail-end of a three-in-three weekend.

Peterborough native and minor Petes product Barrett Hayton has had a solid sophomore season for the Soo. With 20 points so far this season, Hayton makes his only visit to the PMC on Thursday, and as a projected first round pick in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, it could be Barrett’s last time playing in the Liftlock City.

Sault Ste. Marie bounced back after a quick start by Adam Timleck and the Petes, eventually skating to an 8-3 win to extend their streak to eleven straight victories (and ending Peterborough’s more modest winning streak at two). The Petes are getting used to facing red-hot Western Conference squads, having squared off against current CHL top-ranked Sarnia a few weeks back.

Last time, Peterborough gave Sarnia all they could handle at the PMC, but fell short of a win before the road team had their streak busted by Kingston the next night. On Thursday night, the Petes will look to hand SSM an ‘L’ before they head to the Limestone City on Friday.

The November 30 game is being played in support of SickKids, who have launched a new VS campaign. 5,000 monthly donors are needed to help build a new SickKids hospital. During the game, fans

can participate in the fundraising chuck-a-puck, and other game night initiatives, with prizes including Toronto Maple Leafs tickets, a watch, blue tooth headphones, and waterproof duffle bags.

Specials SickKids jerseys will be worn by the Petes during the game. They will be auctioned off beginning at 5pm on Thursday night at www.auction.chl.ca.

In a pre-game ceremony, 15 year-old Jackson Payne will drop the puck on behalf of his younger sister, 4 year-old Eliza Vivian, who was diagnosed with Leukemia in July, 2016 and has since been receiving treatment at SickKids. When the puck drops, the Petes will need to be wary of a high-scoring Hounds team, who have 113 goals for on the season. The Petes aren’t far behind at 94, though, and will look to keep rolling with their 3rd ranked home powerplay (the Greyhounds are ranked 13th in the league in road penalty killing).

The aforementioned Timleck, who missed three weeks of hockey with an injury in November, has scored three goals in three games since his return, including two on Saturday night. The veteran from Toronto still leads the Electric City Kids with a +6 rating. Dylan Wells will also be ready to make an impact as the likely starter on Thursday. His understudy, Hunter Jones, got the nod on Saturday night after Wells posted a 2-0 record with a shutout, 0.50 GAA, and .967 s% on the two nights prior. Sault Ste. Marie also played their backup on Saturday, with Matt Villalta serving as the go-to so far on the campaign, putting up a 2.38 GAA and .938 s%.

The Petes’ young guns are also ready to get back into the fold, with Declan Chisholm, Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, Pavel Gogolev, and John Parker-Jones all on the players to watch list, along with Sault Ste. Marie’s Hayton.

Post-OHL entry draft, we assume that the route to a Memorial Cup is all glamour. However, a lifestyle shift in an unfamiliar area is a taxing process for any teen, regardless of the programs and resources in place to aid the transition. Veterans of the team who exude confidence didn’t arrive at their level of comfort without minor setbacks or feelings of uneasiness early on in their junior careers, such as defenseman Matt Timms.

Timms grew up in Waterdown, Ontario and was drafted 22nd overall by the Petes in 2014. Since then, he has evolved into a leader, and a point per game player during his 2016-17 season until he was plagued by a dislocated shoulder during playoffs and resilient veteran. He also quickly bounced back from a broken foot this season.

Although a lot of his success is self produced, Timms refuses to take full praise for any of his accomplishments. “I I couldn’t give enough credit to my partner Kyle Jenkins. He was totally underestimated. I think he was a massive part of the success,” said Timms, in reference Continued on Page 9

MATT TIMMS FAST TRACKED TO ADULTHOOD

By Shelbi Kilcollins When in attendance of a Petes game its difficult to grapple with the understanding that the players, though playing older than their age insinuates, are mostly teenagers or, at maximum, a couple of years out of high school. While most sixteen and seventeen year olds are concerned about making curfew or hiding their phone from their teachers, Petes and CHL rookies alike are adjusting to moving away from home, or even away from the country they were raised in, while acquiring the full time role of being a student athlete.

He continued by saying, “He and I had a great relationship off and on the ice. We were pretty good friends, and because we were close, we could give each other constructive criticism and we learned from each other. It took a little bit, but by the end of the season, it was apparent we had good chemistry. I’ve never played with a partner who I connected with so well on and off the ice.”

His admiration for those who have helped him along his athletic journey is not limited to the guys alongside him on the bench but in addition, his supporters at home, “My mom is extremely hard working. I really admire the way she handled me growing up. I’m just starting to realize all the sacrifices she made for me growing up in hockey and how she comes up to every home game, her and my grandparents, and its probably two and a half hours for them.” He notes how much Continued on Page 14

Continued from Page 9he looks forward to returning home in the summer.

The separation from this network of overwhelming support posed some difficulties early on in his junior career, “Moving away at sixteen years old then kind of going away to a foreign place, you have to go through tough times. You’re not playing much, the league is so much faster than where you are coming from. You’re screwing up a lot.”

“I just think the big thing is, you’ve got to grow up fast. It hits you like a brick wall” says Timms. He describes the changes fans aren’t accustomed to thinking of when recalling the players, like a new school, new roommates, playing with guys three years older and developing a conditioned physique that wasn’t full demanded in minor hockey.

Fortunately, Timms has stepped into his fourth season comfortably adjusted, with full confidence. He has a stern passion for the game, outstanding vision on the ice, and ties a lot of the players together. His honesty in conversation, approachable attitude, and ability to keep things light on and off the ice has served him as an outstanding leader and necessary presence to the Petes roster.
