Dear Friends,Home Care Partners is all about people, people helping people. At the end of 2014, we employed just over 200 aides, 12 case managers, 4 schedulers, and 4 field counselors/stand-by aides to work with clients in the DC metropolitan area. A small but dedicated group of administrative staff rounds out our office crew. In addition, 3 nurses teach future home care aides at our Training Institute and keep our current aides up to date through regular in-service classes throughout the year.

Behind the scenes, members of our Board of Directors are staunch advocates for long-term care services for seniors, adequate funding and workforce development, in addition to keeping an eye on overall management and operations of the organization. This year, they revamped their committee structure, creating a new Board Development committee to improve Board member recruitment and orientation. Two new members joined in 2014 and a third as this goes to printing.

We would be remiss to leave out the many partners and supporters who make our work possible. We have worked with several of our key municipal partners since shortly after passage of the Older Americans Act of 1965. Old friends are good friends indeed. We hope you enjoy this overview of our activities in 2014 and continue to work with us to empower seniors and their families to live with dignity at home.

Sincerely,Marla Lahat,Executive DirectorBarbara Strother,Chair, Board of Directors

Home Care Partners is a private, non-profit agency serving the Washington metropolitan area. We enable vulnerable people to remain in their own homes in comfort, safety, and dignity. We do this by:

Agency Mission

Home Care Partners was founded in 1957 to work primarily with families with children, training mothers in “homemaker” skills. Today it serves low-income elderly, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers. Through partnerships with the designated Agency on Aging or Human Service agency in Washington, DC, Arlington, Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties, Adult Protective Services, the Veterans Administration, the City of Gaithersburg, and Community Ministries of Rockville, we serve over 1000 clients annually. Our clients are seniors 60 years old and better or adults with disabilities whose needs range from light care, as in our Montgomery County program of that name, to periodic visits several times a week.

Our Training Institute was licensed in the early 1990s. Since 2006, it has been the gateway for over 600 students to become certified home health aides. Our certification classes are intentionally small---18 or fewer students---to allow personalized attention to each student. In 2014, the Training Institute was authorized to be a

continuing education provider. So now it not only trains our own staff through regular in-service sessions, but also offers specialized caregiver training to the community at large.

The DC Caregivers Institute and family caregiver program at Home Care Partners address the needs of family members who are caring for an elderly loved one. Case managers provide educational resources and materials and training and support that help ease the many demands of caregiving. Clients can receive a monthly stipend to cover certain essential caregiving supplies or respite costs.

• Received an increased award from DC Office on Aging to provide an estimated additional 19,000 hours of service to seniors in need.

• Began a new grant initiative to provide occupational therapy assessments and services to seniors at risk of falls.

• Mentored field placements of two social work grad students From Howard University and University of Alabama Schools of Social Work.

• Introduced courses in mental health first aid and Reiki for caregivers.

Because our aides, the backbone of our staff, work in individual homes throughout the metropolitan area, it’s difficult and rare for us to have an all-hands meeting. But, we make an exception each year to have one staff/Board annual meeting where everyone can gather in one place to recognize milestones and accomplishments. And there are many staff achievements to celebrate. In 2014, our annual meeting had an event theme of “Mad Hatters,” allowing staff to show a playful side wearing gorgeous or humorous hats. The variety they wore was an apt symbol for the many hats that our staff wear in their daily work.

Celebrating Our Staff

We are especially proud of two experienced aides, Arnetta Whittaker and Nicole Fletcher. Each has been a past recipient of our annual Miriam Reid Felder award for outstanding employee of the year and has been promoted from home care aide to stand-by aide on a full-time schedule. In 2014, Ms. Whittaker was invited to testify on Capitol Hill along with experts in gerontology about the challenges and needs in home care from an aide’s perspective. Her testimony was so appreciated that she has been invited for further Hill briefings through the National Eldercare Workforce Alliance. Nicole Fletcher has been selected to be on the DC Nursing Assistive Personnel Advisory Board. As a home care aide representative, she and others in the advisory

group will be providing advice to the Board of Nursing on discipline and other issues affecting direct care workers.

Equally impressive are the aides who have dedicated their lives to caring for the frail and disabled through Home Care Partners for decades. In 2014, 8 aides and two other employees have worked here for 30 years or more, and an additional 20 staff have made careers at Home Care Partners for 20 or more years. The value of our staff is affirmed regularly through notes of appreciation from our clients. The phrases “so grateful, deeply appreciated, excellent, amazing, and words cannot fully express my gratitude” recur in praise of our employees and the difference they make to so many individual lives.
