On Wednesday, March 21, Mayor Gus Morrison of Fremont and Mayor Al Nagy of Newark helped LIFE ElderCare volunteers deliver meals to seniors as part of our an-nual Mayors for Meals Day. They were joined by four City Council members, Anu Natarajan, Suzanne Chan and Bill Harrison from Fre-mont, and Maria Collazo from Newark.

“We enjoy celebrating this event be-cause it shows how important com-munity support is in building and sustaining our Meals On Wheels program,” said Mary Anderson, LIFE ElderCare Executive Direc-tor. “We couldn’t do it without the enthusiastic support of people like you.”

During the event, Suzanne Chan presented Anderson with a dona-tion in honor of the late Fremont mayor, Bob Wasserman. “This was a very special program to Bob and his wife Linda, a longtime Meals On Wheels driver,” said Chan.

In addition to providing meals, the volunteers do a daily wellness check on each of the people on their route. While delivering meals with Mayor Morrison, Janaki Arayambath warmly greeted each of the seniors and asked them how they were doing. Janaki started volunteering four years ago when her son left for college and currently delivers meals three days a week on different routes.

“I had fun delivering meals today,” said Morrison. “It gave me the chance to meet some of the older residents in our community and to hear about how grateful they are to be getting one hot meal a day.   I was also im-pressed by the dedicated volunteers.”

Meals On Wheels helps Philip, 96Profile of Fremont resident who has been fiixing clocks for 88 years.

In the small Colorado town where I grew up, people brought their broken clocks to the local jewelry store to be repaired. Those that could not be fixed were donated to kids who wanted to play with them. The first one I got couldn’t be fixed because I didn’t have the parts, but a few weeks later I was given another one that was the same model. By taking parts out of that one, I was able to get the other one work-ing. I was eight years old and have been fixing clocks ever since.

I came to California in 1936, but after losing my job went back to Colorado. A high point of that trip was crossing the Bay Bridge from San Francisco to Oakland. It took four hours and cost 65 cents. In 1939, I came back to the Bay Area and got a job as a mechanic for the bus company. I retired in 1980 at 65.

My six children, 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 5 great-greats are spread out all over the country. I only have one son who lives nearby. My wife and I learned about Meals On Wheels about a year ago when I went to the hospital for some tests. I’m 96 and she’s 86, so we were having a hard time keeping up with shopping and cooking. The meals are healthy which helps me manage my diabetes.

Every day, through no fault of their own, older adults are facing heart-breaking choices. Those who have no family in the area sometimes go for weeks without seeing a friendly face.

In Fremont, the percentage of people aged 60 and older has grown by 30%. We provide a safety net for the mothers, fathers and grandparents in the community. In the Tri-City area, unlike many other parts of the country, this vulnerable population has access to a trusted, community-based organi-zation that treats them like family.

Last year, 700 individuals and businesses supported us with financial contributions. And, over 500 volunteers committed 2-4 hours of their time per month, a $1,100,000 in-kind, community investment in healthy aging. Through Unitek College and Cali-fornia State University, East Bay, 358 nursing students received hands-on experience in geriatric home care.
