Home Care after Total Joint Replacement

Follow these guidelines for care as your new joint heals over the next 6 to 8 weeks. Do not try to overdo or push yourself beyond the limits of pain.

Care of Your Incision• Yourincisionmaybeclosedwithstaples,stitchesorspecialtapes

calledsteri-strips.

• Gentlywashyourincisionwithsoapandwaterandpatdrywithaclean towel. Do not apply lotion or powders near your incision.

• Youcantakeashower2daysafteryoursurgery.Donotlettheshowerwaterspraydirectlyontotheincisionduringthefirsttwoweeks. Do not take a tub bath for two weeks after your surgery.

• Staplesorstitcheswillbetakenoutatyourfollowupvisit.Steri-stripswillbegintofalloffin7to10days.Iftheyhavenotfallenoffafter2weeks,youcangentlypullthemoff.

Swelling• Swellinginthefoot,ankle,kneeandthigharecommonaftertotal

joint replacement.

• Topreventswelling,reclineorliedownwithyourfeethigherthanthelevelofyourheartfor45to60minutes.Dothis2timeseachday.

• Iftheswellingdoesnotdecreaseaftersleepingallnightandkeepingyourfeethigherthanthelevelofyourheartduringtheday,call your doctor.

• Yourdoctormaywantyoutowearelasticstockingstoreduceswelling.Ifso,wearthestockingsduringthedayandremovethematnight. Wash the stockings with soap and water and hang them to dry. Havesomeonehelpyouputthestockingsonandgentlypullthemoff.

Sưng phù• Thườngbịsưngphùchân,cổchân,đầugốivàbắpđùisaukhithay

• Đểngănngừabịsưngphù,nhấcchâncủaquývịcaohơntimtrongtừ45đến60phút.Thựchiệnđiềunày2lầnmỗingày.

• Nếutìnhtrạngsưngphùkhôngthuyêngiảmsaukhingủsuốtđêmvànhấcchâncaovàobanngày, thì gọi cho bác sĩ.

• Bácsĩcóthểchoquývịmangvớthunđểgiảmbớtsưngphù.Nếuphảilàmvậy,thìcầnmangvớthunvàobanngàyvàcởiravàobanđêm.Giặtđôivớnàybằngxàbôngvànướcrồitreolênđểphơikhô.Nhờngườikhácgiúpquývịmangvớnàyvàovànhẹnhàngcởira.

Blood Thinning Medicines• Yourdoctormayorderbloodthinningmedicinefor1to3weeks

toreduceyourriskofbloodclots.Thismedicinemaybegivenasaninjectionintotheabdomen.Youwillbetaughthowtogivethismedicine.

• Ifyoutakeaspirin,productswithaspirin,arthritismedicines,orotherbloodthinners,talktoyourdoctortoseeifyoushouldstoptakingthese medicines while you are on these injections.

Sitting• Donotsitforlongerthan30minutesatatime.Getup,walkand

change your position.

• Avoidlongcartrips.Ifyoumusttravel,stopevery30minutes.Getoutofthecarandmovearound.Thiswillpreventbloodclots,decrease swelling and help decrease joint stiffness.

Walking• Useyourwalkerorcanewithallactivitysothatyoudonotfall.

• Do not walk without your walker or cane until your doctor tells you that it is okay.

• Walkoftenonlevelgroundandgooutdoorsifweatherpermits.Shoppingmallsaregoodplacestowalkduringrainyweather.

• Đừng đi bộ mà không dùng nạng tập đi hoặc gậy cho đến khi bác sĩ cho phép.

• Thườngxuyênđibộtrênmặtđấtbằngvàchỉđirangoàitrờikhithờitiếttốt.Thươngxálànơithíchhợpđểđibộtrongmùamưa.

Sleeping• Donotuseawaterbeduntilapprovedbyyourdoctor.

• Ifyouhadahipreplacement,sleeponyourbackwithapillowbetweenyourkneeswithyourlegs8to12inches(20to30cm)apart.Do not sleep on your side or stomach.

Climbing Stairs• Duringthefirstfewweeksathome,youmaygoupanddownstairs

one time each day with help.

• Haveafriendorfamilymemberstandbehindyouasyougoupandinfrontofyouasyoucomedown.Holdontothehandrail.

Sexual Activity• Afterkneereplacement,youmayreturntosexualactivityassoonas

you feel able.

• Afterhipreplacement,youmayresumesexualactivity6to8weeksaftersurgery.Itisbesttobeonthebottomwithyourlegsspreadapartandslightlybent.Avoidhipbendingortwisting.Donotrotateyourleginward.Afterseveralmonthsofhealing,youmayresumesexualactivity in any comfortable position.

Driving a Car• Donotdriveacaruntilyourdoctortellsyouitisokay–often

6 weeks after surgery.

• Onlydriveifyoucancontrolyoursurgerylegandyouarenottakingpain medicine.

• Donotsitonlowsurfacessuchaschairs,toilets,andcarseats.Sitwith your hips higher than your knees.

• Donottwistatthetrunk.Moveyourwholebodywhenyouturn.

• Donotbendforwardatthewaistmorethan90°orliftyourkneehigher than your hip.

• Donotturnyourkneesinwhilesittingorlyingdown.

• Donotsitwithyourlegsclosetogether.Keepyourfeet8to12inches(20to30cm)apartwhensitting.

Activities after Your Joint Heals• Yournewjointcanbedamagedbyroughtreatment.Avoidactivities

thatmaycauseextrastressorinjurethejointsuchasbaseball,basketball,joggingandtennis.

• Doyourphysicaltherapyexercisestokeepyourmusclesandligaments strong to support your joint.

• Maintainahealthyweightforyourheight.

• Afteryourjointishealed,about6to8weeksaftersurgery,youmaybeabletoresumeslowdancing,swimmingandotheractivities.Checkwithyourdoctorbeforeyoustartanynewactivity.

Water Walking• Waterwalkinginapoolisrelaxingandstrengthensthemusclesinthe

hip and leg.

• Donotwalkinwaterunlessyouhaveyourdoctor’spermissionandyourincisioniswellhealed–often6weeksaftersurgery.

• Enterthepooltochesthighwater.Holdontothesideofthepoolandwalkfor15to20minutes.Repeat3to5dayseachweek.

Preventing Infection• Itisimportanttopreventandtreatinfectionsbecauseaninfectioncan

move through the blood to your joint.

• Youneedtotakeantibioticsbeforehavinganyfuturesurgeryordentalcare.Callyourfamilydoctorandtellthemwhatyouarehaving done and get a prescription for antibiotics.

• Tellallofyourdoctorsincludingyourdentistthatyouhavehadjointreplacement.

• Seeadentistforcareevery6monthstopreventinfectionfromyourteeth.Beforeyourappointment,callyourdentisttogetaprescriptionfor antibiotics.

• Ifyouthinkyouhaveaninfection,callyourdoctor.
