Holy Week and Its Liturgies

Palm Sunday We are about to enter the most sacred time of the Church

year. Holy Week begins with the liturgies of Palm (Passion) Sunday. Christians throughout the world remember Jesus’

triumphal entry into Jerusalem amid crowds, shouting “Hosanna,” waving palm branches and placing their cloaks on the ground where the donkey bearing him would walk.

By the end of this day’s liturgy we will also remember how quickly the crowds turned on Jesus, shouting, “Crucify

him!” and sending him to the death of a criminal.

It is the tradition of the Church to distribute palm branches.

For many years, St. Vincent’s has purchased palm fronds through the Center for Integrated National Resources and

Agricultural Management. This provides income to Guatemalan farmers at a Fair Trade level. These farmers practice sustainable

forestry, protecting palm populations and the forest. More information is available at www.cinram.umn.edu.

Holy Thursday Our celebration of this liturgy begins with a “Bring and

Share” (pot luck) feast, a wonderful opportunity to get to know other people in the parish. Beginning at 6 p.m. and

concluding around 7 p.m. all are invited to bring a dish to share to the Parish Hall, coming at a time that works with their

schedule and enjoying the meal with whoever might be present. Volunteers are needed to help with setting up and cleaning up.

The Mass of the Lord ’s Supper, which follows the “Bring and Share” feast, calls our attention to the night

before Jesus died. The significant element of John’s Gospel, which serves as the touchstone for this liturgy, is

Jesus’ mandate to his friends. “As I have done, so you also must do.” What Jesus is speaking of is an act of humble

service represented by the washing of feet.

It is the custom of St. Vincent’s parish to wash one another’s feet, as we are able. Several stations are set

up throughout the church so the process does not take long yet remains very meaningful. By participating in this ritual we acknowledge the presence of Christ in each other. The teens and youth of our parish assist with this ritual, providing basins, warm water and

towels.

Good Friday On this day, the Stations of the Cross will be led by our youth at 3 p.m. in the Grotto, on the corner of Yates and

Ontario Streets.

The principal liturgy is the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion which takes place at 6 p.m. in church. In this rite we focus on the events leading up to and including Jesus’ death through crucifixion. In his suffering we

recognize the suffering that pervades our world and we pray for those who are afflicted and those who have the power

to effect change.

Good Friday (cont.) We also acknowledge our own contributions to this

suffering through our sinful behaviors, whether personally or as part of oppressive systems.

We recognize Jesus’ great act of love in submitting to the evils of human weakness as we reverence the

cross. Parishioners are invited to take a turn carrying the cross if they are physically able and all are welcome

to honor the cross with a touch of the hand or a kiss.

Mass is not celebrated on this day but Communion is offered to those who participate in this liturgy.

The Easter Vigil

“This is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld” (from the

Exsultet.)

A liturgy of liturgies, it begins at 8 p.m. with the blessing of the new fire, in front of the church on Madison Ave. followed by the blessing of the Paschal (Easter) Candle.

Several readings from the Hebrew Scriptures are proclaimed. In these we are reminded of God’s creation of the world, God’s great faithfulness to the Israelites, the gift

of the God’s grace represented by flowing water and abundant life. In the Letter to the Romans we hear how we

have been born to new life in Christ.

This year, after the blessing of the new water, we will celebrate the baptism of four adults, an adult being received

into full communion with the Catholic Church and a Confirmation. It is a night for making all things new: fire,

light, water, lives.

Easter Sunday While not as intricate in its liturgies as the Vigil, the Masses of Easter Sunday are no less festive. In them, we renew our

baptismal promises and are sprinkled with the baptismal water, reminding us of the new life we share with the

resurrected Jesus.

As we prepare to enter Holy Week, may we pray for one another that we will be filled with the graces of the Paschal Mystery: Christ’s passion, death and resurrection to new life and be renewed in the desire to fulfill our own unique call

to discipleship.

Safety Awareness Scavenger Hunt! Due to the increase in random acts of violence in

our society, many organizations are doing emergency response training. One of the first points made is

the awareness of one’s surroundings. Where are the exits; where are the first aid kits and fire extinguishers?

To help us all be aware of the location of lifesaving materials, we have created the opportunity for a

scavenger hunt, using the floor plan of our worship site and the more immediate area of the parish hall.

Please pick up a floor plan at one of the church entrances and mark the locations of all these items, plus the AED device on it. Answer keys are located

on the cabinets of both sacristies and in the parking lot entrance office.

When you have completed the hunt, show Elizabeth and you will receive a small prize.

Thanks to Beth Lacey and Rich Nagengast for providing the logistics.
