Rector’s Monthly Message
Pentecost is coming! Pentecost is coming! We are now over halfway through this
season of Easter and we can see the red of Pentecost on our Episcopal calendars. Get
out your red shirt, your red socks, and let your hearts be ready for the remembrance of
this great feast. The Easter season is 50 days long hence the term Pentecost. The
origins of the feast predate our Christian calendar and harken back to the early Hebrew
times. It was set aside as the Feast of the Weeks, and marked 50 days after Passover. In
my own life, Pentecost signals the culmination of the Easter season, the birth of the
church, the sending of the Holy Spirit, AND it means we are right on the cusp of
summer! I love summer!
I would like to share parts of a terrific blessing for the Pentecost feast written by Joyce
Rupp, a vowed religious (a nun) and writer. May the enthusiasm of Spirit leap incessantly with you
and help you to live a vibrant life.
May the warmth of the Spirit’s fire be extended through your concern and care
for all those who need your love.
May the blaze of Spirit’s courage enable you to speak the truth
and to stand up for respect, dignity, and justice.
May the undying embers of Spirit’s faithfulness support you
when you feel spiritually dry and empty…
May the clear light of Spirit’s guidance be a source
of effective discernment and decision-making for you…
May the steady flame of Spirit’s goodness with you convince you every day
of the power of your presence with others.
May the joyful fire of Spirit dance within you
and set happiness ablaze in your life.
May the spark of your relationship with Spirit catch afire in the hearts
of those with whom you live and work.
My prayer for you always is to let that wild bright Spirit burn within you and to
always live in the joy of knowing you are God’s beloved people. Rev. Susanna+

Congratulations Graduates!
Sam Bates, Grandson of Sally Bates, graduating from Southeast High School
Ciara Jenkins and Ian Ousley, graduates from UNL. Ian has a position waiting for him at WestPoint in
the Athletics Department and Ciara will be student teaching in Elkhorn. We wish them all the best in
their pursuits and are so thankful for their presence in the last couple of years.
Coming this summer-
Kyle Martindale!
This summer we are blessed to welcome Kyle Martindale to Church of the Holy
Trinity. He will be involving himself in every aspect of our parish and you will see
lots of him. Here’s a brief introduction to this seminarian and postulant of the
Diocese of Nebraska.
Kyle Martindale is currently attending Virginia Theological Seminary in
Alexandria, Virginia where he will be returning for his third, and final, year this
fall. His sponsoring parish is Saint Mark’s Pro-Cathedral in Hastings, where he has
been a member since his confirmation in 2000. He has been attending Saint Mark’s since his family’s move
there in 1998 when his father was called as their tenth Dean. He graduated from Hastings College in 2009 with
a degree in Political Science.
During college, and until his move to seminary, Kyle was the youth director at Saint Mark’s and served St.
Stephen’s in Grand Island for a time, along with helping with diocesan youth events. For two years before his
move to Virginia, Kyle worked in several roles at Crossroads Center Rescue Mission in Hastings and Kearney.
The care for those in need, and fervor for youth ministry have influenced Kyle’s course selection at school,
where he has focused much attention on Christian Education and Practical Ministry, working to combine these
areas with his passion for preaching.

How You Can Help Holy Trinity in the 22nd Century? Just add a few lines to your will.
A will is one of the easiest and most effective ways to distribute your estate and it can also be a very
effective way to impact the future of this church. Income from the endowment fund is a crucial addition to our
budget. In the future your pledge through an endowment can help keep Holy Trinity vibrant and alive in
ministry. You can make a difference.
Holy Trinity has four endowment funds, a general fund, a maintenance fund, a music fund, and a youth
fund. A bequest to any of these funds helps insure that Holy Trinity will continue in ministry into the 22nd
century. Including Holy Trinity in your estate plans is as simple as adding a few words to your will and can be
a huge benefit to future generations of parishioners. In addition this entitles you to membership in the Holy
Trinity Legacy Society and your name will be added to the Legacy Society plaque in the foyer. Please call me if
you have any questions, and thank you. ~ George McCabe

Coming this Summer ~
Dinner and a Movie on Friday Nights Movies often convey such deep truth in story and visions, truth that can shake us
and awaken new thoughts and new ways. This summer we will jump into a full-
length movie together after we share a meal together. Potluck dinners (Holy Spirit
style, meaning bring what pleases you and we’ll see how it works), then the full
showing of the movie, topped off with a short discussion around the table. The
movies will be
Selma
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Dates tba but we will start in early June.
Summer Book Group: Searching for Sunday by Rachel Saturday mornings at 9 am in the Memorial Room Like millions of her millennial peers, Rachel didn’t want to go to church anymore. The
hypocrisy, the politics, the gargantuan building budgets, the scandals—church culture
seemed so far removed from Jesus. Yet, despite her cynicism and misgivings, something
kept drawing her back to Church. And so she set out on a journey to understand Church and
to find her place in it. Centered around seven sacraments, her quest takes readers through
stories about baptism, communion, confirmation, confession, marriage, vocation, and death
that are funny, heartbreaking, and sharply honest. A memoir about making do and taking
risks, about the messiness of community and the power of grace, Searching for Sunday is
about overcoming cynicism to find hope and, somewhere in between, Church. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Holy Trinity Book Shop – Book Review
Life After College
Paperback, 151 pp., $9.99 Lessons for students in transition
By Will S. Keim, Chalice Press, 1996
You have your diploma. Your degree is in your pocket. But what happens next?
How do you hop onto life's back? What? When? Where? So many questions arise at graduation that it can be
a daunting experience.
This book of thirty-three chapters—if indeed they can be called chapters, each being less than a page in
length—offers suggestions written from a Christian viewpoint to help guide you in making decisions. Each
chapter is accompanied by a short self-test, and the book is replete with excellent advice and quotes from
famous authors. Reviewed by Marilyn Dorf _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Special Events: Pentecost Sunday, May 24 & Trinity Sunday, May 31 Hold on to your socks-we are having a really special May!
Pentecost Sunday is May 24th
and we will mark the celebration by wearing as much
red as you can! We want to become a sea of red to remember the coming of the Holy
Spirit among the first followers of Jesus, the moment we say the Church was born. So
think RED –not hard for Huskers fans!
Trinity Sunday is May 31st and we will welcome Bishop J. Scott Barker for his
annual visit to Holy Trinity. He has graciously consented to confirm our two youths,
Emma Gaspar and Luke Long during the 10:30 am service. Following the later
service we will convene to the south lawn for our annual Feast Day Picnic. Let’s
mark this day by wearing a rainbow of colors! Hawaiian shirts are wonderful!

Happy Mother’s Day Sunday, May 10

Dominican Republic Missioners Seek Your Help
The NE Youth DR Mission Team Returns
to El Pedregal in June 2015.
The Diocese of Nebraska will be well represented in the mountains of central Dominican
Republic June 22-29, 2015. Eighteen youth and leaders from 5 Nebraska parishes will
once again partner with Christ Church Valdosta Georgia to complete two very important
construction projects. First, we will build another home for a church family. This
determined group will also renovate an existing building to serve the local community as
a Children’s Shelter and Pre-School.
How can you help? There’s a couple of ways you can help with this important work.
Holy Trinity is sending two missioners on this trip. Haiden O’Keefe and Rev.
Susanna will be leaving on Sunday, June 21st to be commissioned with the entire group from the
diocese at Trinity Cathedral’s 10:30 service. The next day the journey begins. We will be selling
stock certificates to help support Haiden in this work. Each share will be $10 and your return on
investment (roi) will be an invitation to a special presentation by Haiden and Mother Susanna,
with pictures and commentary and special Dominican Republic coffee brought back and brewed
just for you! We also will be supporting Haiden with a game night here at church-stay tuned for
information and date on that. If you would like to help with this, please contact Rev. Susanna; we
will gladly accept baked goodies to sell at the event, with all money going to Haiden’s fees.
Please keep our 2015 NE Youth DR Mission Team in your prayers. Second, school supplies, children’s
books (especially Spanish/English books) may be donated for delivery this June to the School of the
Mount of the Transfiguration. Finally, you may financially support this mission to change lives by sending
monetary gifts to Beth Byrne, Diocesan Director of Finance, at 109 North 18th Street, Omaha NE 68102.
Please indicate your gift is to support the NE Youth DR Mission.
Please contact Don and Melissa Peeler at 402-572-7556, or at [email protected] or Rev. Susanna with any
questions you may have regarding this ministry or items you may wish to donate.
Prayer changes everything (and everyone)!
During our Lent series someone suggested that we start an ongoing prayer
group here at Holy Trinity. We would gather weekly for 20 minutes of silent
prayer, called Centering Prayer. (Interested in this type of prayer? Read
Thomas Keating’s book Open Mind, Open Heart for a brilliant and easily
accessible discussion on this ancient prayer form.) Something deeply mystical
happens when a group of people come together and pray silently. The idea
was that this would be an ongoing group (no end date), available to all as they
were able to attend. Are you interested? Do you have a favorite day or time
that you would like to see this happen? Please let Rev. Susanna know and
let’s see if we can make this happen. Thanks.
