Silver Anniversary! This year there was a lot to celebrate at the Julie Cole Charity Golf Classic. Albeit a bit windy, it was a perfect day for golf, fellowship, friendly competition, and most of all, celebrating Julie Cole who has committed 25 years of giving back to the Findlay community through her sponsorship of this tournament which has raised more than $2.2 million. In honor of Julie’s commitment and devotion, Blanchard Valley Health System recently named its comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility, which provides physical, occupational and speech therapy for infants to older adults, Julie A. Cole Rehab and Sports Medicine at Blanchard Valley Hospital. No stranger to physical therapy herself, our Guest Pro, Stacy Lewis, is not only golf’s most inspirational role model, but is also the first athlete to win a major sports championship with a fused spine. Stacy, who reclaimed the #1 world ranking at a tournament the day before the Julie Cole, challenged our teams to beat her on the 9th hole. BVHF wishes to thank Marathon Petroleum Corporation for their assistance in securing Stacy as this year’s pro. Julie had her own contest for players at the putting green and spent extra time with our two Julie Cole Golf Fund junior players, Cole Ohlrich and Zoie Nieto. In honor of all tournament volunteers a special thank you reception and party sponsored by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, was combined with the awards ceremony following the tournament. Live music provided by Julie’s Findlay High School classmates, the Reunion Band, rocked the back patio of Findlay Country Club while guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, drinks and shared stories of the day’s golf heroics. Following the energetic and committed lead from Julie Cole herself, our sponsors, volunteers, players, pro, Chad Bain and the Findlay Country Club staff all did what they could to make it an enjoyable and successful day. In fact, proceeds of more than $165,000 were raised for the entire event! Definitely something to celebrate and great news for our beneficiaries: Bridge Hospice, Julie A. Cole Rehab and Sports Medicine at Blanchard Valley Hospital and the Julie Cole Golf Fund for Junior Golfers. Summer 2014 | Volume 2 bvhealthsystem.org Thank you, Julie!

No stranger to physical therapy herself, our Guest Pro, Stacy Lewis, is not only golf’s

most inspirational role model, but is also the first athlete to win a major sports championship with a fused spine.

Live

music provided by Julie’s Findlay High School classmates, the Reunion Band, rocked the back patio of Findlay Country Club while guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, drinks and shared stories of the day’s golf heroics.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF THE JULIE COLE CHARITY GOLF

CLASSIC

“CHEERS TO JULIE!”Engraved silver champagne chillers filled with celebratory “bubbly” to toast Julie Cole’s 25th anniversary celebration graced the center of every table greeting more than 225 lively major sponsors at the Julie Cole Major Sponsors’ Reception. Guests enjoyed lively bidding on once-in-a-lifetime silent and live auction items including international trips; gas for a year; fine wines, including a 25-year old Chateau Montrose Saint Estephe donated by Randy Cole, Julie’s brother, in honor of her silver anniversary; diamond jewelry; gourmet dinners and golf packages. A record-breaking $73,095 was raised benefitting the Julie Cole charities. Julie herself was the surprise beneficiary of a Von’s Diamonds and Jewelry specially-designed diamond pendant she was modeling.

A delicious dinner followed remarks from reception sponsor Mike Needler, Sr. of Great Scot Community Markets, toastmaster Scott Malaney and Julie Cole, who expressed her appreciation to the many individuals and major sponsors of today and from the past who helped make her dream of a golf tournament to benefit Bridge Hospice and other community charities a reality 25 years ago.

“I am thrilled with all the surprises and overwhelmed by all the outpouring of thanks,” said Julie.

Dave Glass, VP/director of broadcast for Findlay Publishing, served as master of ceremonies with Kris Goshe from Walter Brothers as our auctioneer. They really know how to keep the energy high and the crowd engaged and entertained!

On May 30, around 500 students from Van Buren Elementary School held a fundraiser called “Walk for a Cause” that raised $2,222.63 for Bridge Hospice. For the past 12 years, the students have chosen a different non-profit that has some meaning to their school and raised money to support that organization. This year, they chose Bridge Hospice because Hospice provided care to 16-year-old Van Buren student, Madeline Ellingsworth, and the elementary principal’s mother, Ann Newcomer. Madeline’s mother, Julie, and the elementary principal’s father, Dick, joined the students on the walk.

With Bridge Hospice as the students’ designated charity, the Van Buren Elementary guidance counselor visited individual classrooms and discussed the importance of giving back to the community and the need for the organization. Teaching students about various organizations that are valuable in our community and giving back to the community is a great way to end a school year. We are proud to partner with the students and are grateful for their donation!

The Blanchard Valley Hospital Auxiliary has pledged their commitment to comprehensive cancer care for Findlay and surrounding communities through a $450,000 donation to the new Blanchard Valley Cancer Care Center. The pledge will be filled over three years. A check signifying the pledge was formally presented by Auxiliary President Elizabeth Candler to Kimberly Benson, director of oncology services, at the annual BVH Volunteer Recognition Banquet held Thursday, April 10 at Birchaven Village.

As a follow-up to the Spring 2014 Legacy newsletter’s cover story, the $2.5 million capital campaign to renovate and expand the existing Cancer Care Center at EasternWoods, which includes a $500,000 endowment to sustain programs located there, is moving forward. Taking an internal leadership approach to funding this project prior to reaching out to the community, BVHS Board Chair Duane Jebbett and his wife Kathy challenged BVHS and BVHF board members to match or exceed their gift.

Board members rising to the challenge and exceeding their goal have offered this funding challenge to area medical professionals as well, while simultaneously the annual Foundation Annual Campaign for Excellence (FACE) is reaching out to all BVHS associates. While associates may give to many areas within BVHS, the Cancer Care Center is a focus of

this year’s campaign. Additionally, the BVH Auxiliary has pledged $150,000 per year over the next three year to support this project. BVHF is hoping this show of internal support to the Cancer Care Center capital campaign will inspire others to give once the community campaign is launched during the third quarter.

Meanwhile, an interesting development has occurred. BVHF has received calls from attorneys who have clients wishing to include the Cancer Care Center in their estate plans. What incredible support, foresight and a great idea, especially if the donor wishes to help grow the Cancer Care Center endowment for future sustainability!

If this is something you wish to consider, please visit bvhealthsystem.org/giving or call 419-423-5457 for more information.
