Letter To Parishioners Deuteronomy 32.10-18

A few years ago I read a story in a National Geographic magazine. The story was set in a National Park in the USA. A fire had destroyed many acres of trees and when the rangers went to investigate they found a surprising survivor. They came across a little bird at the base of one of the charred trees. The little bird was dead but when the ranger poked it with a stick and it fell over out from underneath its wings fled three little chicks. In the midst of the raging fire all around that mother bird had gathered her chicks and spread her wings covering them, shielding them from the flames. She gave her life that they might survive. That story came to my mind when I read these verses from Deuteronomy 32. Let me set the context for these words.

They are spoken by Moses, near the end of his life. The people of Israel have been wandering for 40 years in the desert wilderness, as a result of their disobedience. A simple lesson there – disobedience leads to wilderness wandering. They now stand on the brink of entry into the Promised Land and Moses addresses them for the last time. Moses will die before they cross the Jordan. God forbade him entry into the Promised Land because of his disobedience at Meribah when he struck the rock for water, against the instructions of God. So in this his final address Moses retells the story of the Exodus, of all God’s provision and prophecies that the people of Israel will wander away again from God, but we will come to that in a moment. I want to concentrate on verses 10-12 – because I think they have a lot to say to each of us here today.

4   Holy  Trinity  -‐  Woodburn

January  2015

Read with me verses 10-12.

Verse 10 Moses simply states where God found them. The land of Egypt to many, even the Israelites, seemed the perfect place to live. Rich, plenty, cultured and sophisticated. Yet look how Moses describes it – a barren land, a desert wasteland with howling winds. Not a pretty picture. Moses says to them – you can look back with fondness if you wish but the reality was that it was a dead place, a place of waste and desert. A place where the sand was blown into your eyes and face by the wind. A scorched land, parched, dry and one with no hope and no future. Friends, can I suggest to you – the same description is true of the world in which you live. Oh, you can look around you and say – it is no desert wasteland, it rains too much to be a desert. But let us look at what is going to last into eternity in your world. Your car, your house, your job, your pension, what? The world around us is a desert, a wasteland, a place of death. A place promising life but leading only to death. A place promising all sorts of pleasure and no pain but the very opposite is true. But did you note how Moses started verse 10?

He says God found them. God found them – they did not find God, nor did they search for God. At one stage in the desert wanderings the people of Israel grumbled that life was better in the land of Egypt. You know to human eyes they were right. Egypt was a better place to live than the desert, but Egypt had no future. Egypt was, like all the kingdoms of this world, doomed to die, doomed to become an archaeological sight. Listen to me – this world may appear a better place to live. This world may appear more attractive than the kingdom of God but it has no future. It is doomed to destruction. ‘God found them’. If you turn back to the

Holy  Trinity  -‐  Woodburn   5

January  2015

beginning of Exodus and the point at which God calls Moses you read that God heard the cries and the groans of his people. Listen to me, they groaned and cried and he heard. They were oppressed and depressed by the Egyptians, there seemed to be no hope of release from this slavery, from this pain of toil of making bricks. But God heard their cries and he answered. He found them. He searched them out and he brought them to the Promised Land.

You may be able to identify with those feelings and hardships. It may even feel like you are in slavery, making bricks out of straw for hard taskmasters. God has heard your cry, he has found you, he has searched you out and he is here this morning to take you to the Promised Land. The world you now inhabit has no future, it has no hope but praise God he has found you in your desert and has come to bring you to a land of plenty.

We have just celebrated Christmas. The period of the year when we give thanks and remember God sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to this world to bring salvation through His death and resurrection. As you begin 2015 I pray that you know God has found you in Christ Jesus and brought you to the Promised Land of Salvation. In 2015 let us together press on in the kingdom of God as we look forward to the blessings of the God who found us and brought us home.

God bless you all

From The Treasurer Happy New Year everyone. By the time you are reading this you should have received your FWO envelopes for 2015. Some people will have been renumbered again and for this I apologise but we now have no wastage. There will be no renumbering in the foreseeable future. Thank you for your understanding.

If you have not received envelopes and would like a set please speak to Karen or Drew.

At the start of a new year could I ask everyone to look again at their giving?

I think it’s important that our income increases in line with expenditure so if you don’t automatically increase your offering in

your envelope or standing order could I ask that you prayerfully consider this.

Vision Team

You will be aware that a small team has been in Woodburn Primary School every Monday and Tuesday during November and December. We had a remarkable experience with the children and it was our privilege to share some stories from the Old Testament.

It is envisaged that the team will start in mid February and run up to Easter 2015. This session will be held every Tuesday at Woodburn Primary School from 2pm- 2-50pm.

If you feel you could be part of this outreach please speak to Drew or one of the team. We need people to chat with the children, make juice, help with colouring in and games and if you wish you can also help with some of the lessons or read the story.

Lastly I just want to thank Yvonne, Sharon, Gwen, Karen and Liz.

Storehouse / Social Services

There are families in our community who are really struggling and we want to make a difference.

Please help by placing a weekly donation of Non Perishable Food or Household Products in the Red Boxes in the Church foyer.

At the end of each month we will split the items donated between these two very worthy community projects.

If you have items of unwanted furniture, Storehouse will gladly take them off your hands. To arrange a collection please speak to Donna Harrison.

Thank you for your support and prayers.

God Bless,

Donna Harrison & Elaine Gray

Prayer Times For Holy Trinity On the first Wednesday of EACH MONTH we will be having a time of prayer for Holy Trinity from 7pm-8.30pm.

Also each Sunday morning from 10am-10.20am the Courtney Hall will be reserved for a time of prayer for the morning service.

It is vitally important that we as the people of God prioritize these times and together pray for Holy Trinity and the mission of God here.

Prayer Team After the 10.30am service every Sunday a number of us will be available to pray with you at the front of the church. Please feel free to bring any situation for prayer. Your prayer requests will, as always, remain confidential, however should you feel that you would prefer to receive prayer in the privacy of the prayer room two of the team will be happy to move into there with you.

Holy Trinity Bowls Fellowship

The Bowls Fellowship will resume on Thursday 8th Jan 2015 at 7.45pm.

Once again a very warm welcome is extended to all adults (and secondary school pupils accompanied by parents/grand-parents) at Holy Trinity to join us.

Jack Blair Hon Secretary.

The Crafters of Holy Trinity Crafters @ HT continues, we have over the past few weeks had donations of wool which hopefully will be used by anyone who crafts for a good cause. We are taking a break over Christmas, starting back on Friday 9th January. Wishing everyone a lovely Christmas. Craft nights have been great, sharing skills and inspiration for new projects. I had the opportunity of assisting Helen Fittis in GB making sock snowmen. Brilliant night and great snowmen were made all with their own personalities. My Mr Frosty the Snowman made it into work under the Christmas tree. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and hoping to see you all back in January.

Parents & Tots Happy New Year to you all! We hope that you had a marvelous Christmas soaking up time with family and friends. We had a very special friend stop by on December 18th...Santa came to visit our group! It was fabulous, and everyone really enjoyed it. Just a quick note that we start back on January 8th, 2015. We would love to see you there. Also, please honestly pray about volunteering for our wee group. Even if you can help out one Thursday a month, it would be greatly appreciated as this group grows. All you need to volunteer is a heart for ladies and chatting! If you feel led to do so, please contact myself or Liz and we'll definitely be able to use you. If you can't volunteer a morning, please pray that opportunities to talk to the Mums about Christ will open up.

Many thanks and God bless,
