Passing on the Baton
We might compare the Ascension to the passing of a baton from one runner to another in a relay race.
On this day, just over 2000 years ago, Jesus passed the baton of his work to Peter, James, and John. They, in turn, passed it on to the people who came after them. They, in turn, passed it on to us. And now it is our turn to pass it on to others.
Practically speaking, what does this mean? Does it mean going out and preaching about Jesus, as Peter, James, and John did? Does it mean mounting soapboxes in shopping centres and telling everyone about Jesus?
It could mean this for some of us, but for most of us it means something much more basic than this. It means something much more fundamental. It means living out Jesus’ teaching in our own personal lives.
The way to begin preaching Jesus to the world is to begin preaching Jesus to ourselves. There’s an old Chinese proverb that says:
If there is right in the soul, there will be beauty in the person. If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.
The way to begin preaching Jesus to the world is to begin living Jesus in our own lives. Once we begin to do this, the message of Jesus will begin to ripple out across the world. And if enough Christians do it, that ripple will turn into a tidal wave, and that tidal wave will change the face of the earth in a way we never dreamed possible.

# # # URGENT help required from parish volunteers! # # # ALL parish volunteers in any ministry are by government law required to read the Child Protection Code of Conduct and sign the Acknowledgement form. Copies of these documents are available in the church foyer or you can request one to be emailed by contacting the Parish office. Please return forms to your Mass coordinator or place them in the red box in the church foyer. In addition, all volunteers in the following Ministries are required by law to hold a Working with Vulnerable People card and provide a copy to the Parish Office. Mass Coordinators, Children's Liturgy, Communion to the sick and house bound, Care Group, Home visitation, transport to Mass, Prayer Groups and Youth Ministers. This is a government law that needs to be adhered to by both the Parish and Archdiocese, and if you are in one of these Ministries and do not have a WWVP card unfortunately we are no longer able to add you to a roster. Our parish is subject to another audit in June and we want to pass with flying colours! :-)

Walk in a Mile in Her Shoes
A year ago, our friend and fellow parishioner, Sharon Kirkwood, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease. This devastating disease has an average life expectancy of 2 – 5 years. This has had a huge personal and financial impact on Sharon and her young family. Sharon stepped down from the Parish Pastoral Council when diagnosed but still comes to 9.30 Mass and her eldest child has just started school at Good Shepherd. Her sister has set up a Go-Fund-Me page to help the family. The Ascension of the Lord Today is our liturgical celebration of the Ascension of the Lord, when Jesus was taken to heaven on the 40th day after Easter. The feast develops the glory of the resurrection by acclaiming the exaltation of Christ as Lord of heaven and earth. It serves to prepare the church, toward the end of the season of Easter, for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
In the crucifixion we see Jesus’ humanity; in the ascension see Jesus’ divinity. At the heart of the Christian faith is the core conviction that Jesus Christ – fully human and fully divine – is God. In Him, we can experience two previously separate realities: human and divine. The ascension allows us to see these two realities at play, Jesus stepping into heaven, carrying humanity with Him.
The ascension defines the moment in history where pure love (the Son) collides with pure love (the Father) to send forth a pure love (the Holy Spirit) into the world. It is in this way that we are immersed – Baptised – in the love that exists between the Father and the Son. As a result, we are called let go and let God take hold of our lives. Today, open your heart and mind. Today, let go and let God fill you with the overflowing love. Amen. I am sending down to you what the Father has promised. Stay then, until you are clothed with the power from on high" (Jesus, Luke 24:49)

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY APPEAL 2019
COLLECTION FOR ARCHDIOCESAN SEMINARIAN
FORMATION
This May, we’ve been thankful for your support of the Good
Shepherd Sunday Appeal.
Our goal this year is to raise $75,000 towards to the costs of
educating and forming our seminarians. The people of our
Archdiocese have given generously and we are closing in on
our target. To date, our own parish collection has been $544.
But there is still time to make a gift or begin a monthly
donation. Envelopes are available in the church, which can be left either on the collection plate or posted to The GSS
Appeal, GPO Box 3089 Canberra ACT 2601. Donations can also
be made on-line through the website www.cgcatholic.org.au/
donate.
Your prayers and financial support for the future priests of
our community are vital. THANK YOU!
The Parish Council has agreed to build a Grotto to
Our Lady in the grounds of the church. It will be
separate from any proposed renovations and will
proceed as soon as possible. The Holy Spirit
Grotto will be in keeping with the church style and
environment but will provide a special place for praying to
Mary, our Mother. With the support of the parish community
we will have it ready for Our Lady’s birthday in September. Fr
Jiss will be leading the charge on this ‘beautiful’ project and he
will be advised by a committee of parishioners. To inspire our
work we are holding a Holy hour of prayer to Our Lady at
5.30pm before the 6pm Mass next Saturday night , 8 June.

Children A social Justice Message
The Parish Social Justice group meets monthly and this week the topic for discussion was Laudato Si – on care for our common home - an encyclical letter on ecology and climate written by Pope Francis. Laudato Si translates to Praise be to you. Fiona Wilkinson led the group in a review of Laudato Si and each person spoke briefly about what they had learnt from the document. There were a range of comments including the opportunity for faith formation; the importance of ecology and climate; change, motivation and education; that we don’t want to be known as a greedy nation not caring for our land, waterways and the earth. We want to be leaders in our area, without being daunted by our concern for the planet but to identify what we can do locally and to remember that ‘little daily actions and practical things’ help. There will be more over the next months regarding this important document by Pope Francis who writes on page 20 ‘It is my hope that this Encyclical Letter, which is now added to the body of the Church’s social teaching, can help us to acknowledge the appeal, immensity and urgency of the challenge we face.’ If you would like more information about the Social Justice
