St. Luke the Evangelist October 18th
There are only a few certain facts about St. Luke’s life. We know him best as the author of the third gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles.
A Greek himself, he wrote the story of Jesus and the Christian community for Gentile readers. He also accompanied St. Paul on some of his journeys and shared
in his sufferings. Probably a physician, Luke may have pioneered as an early member of the church at Antioch.
The saint’s books reveal something about his character. Luke wrote excellent popular prose with an artist's skill at painting picture stories. Demonstrating an unusual commitment to accuracy, he appears to have fastidiously checked his facts. For example, archaeologists have confirmed many details that he reported in the Acts.
Some of Luke’s main themes - prayer, the Holy Spirit, and mercy - suggest that he was a compassionate, spiritual man. He aimed his books to persuade Gentiles that the Christian story was true. So he made it more accessible to them by filling his gospel with accounts of Christ’s openness and mercy.
MEN OF FAITH AND SPIRIT This group is open to all men. Join us on Friday mornings after the 8:30 am Mass in the Martha and Mary Room as we review the scripture readings for the upcoming Sunday. The Fellowship of Catholic Men provides commentary and discussion questions on each week’s readings. We also view Jeff Cavin’s weekly video comments on the readings. Please check us out or contact Dave Boone at 913.492.2878 for more information.

A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Lord God, most holy, we approach you in gratitude for your holy ordained priesthood. You have called these men to be set apart and to shepherd your people, as you shepherd your entire church. We pray for them in their daily work. Grant to them an increase in spiritual gifts and grace, so they may be prepared for the tasks at hand. Lead them not into temptation and protect them from the grasp of the evil one. It is through the sacraments they confer that we encounter the divine in a real and profound way. May your church never lose sight of these, your special sons, and may we, the body of Christ, never fail to cherish the gift of their lives, which they have freely given to you and your holy church. We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son. Amen.

27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Sharing the Gospel Imagine how it would feel to be invited by a king to come to his palace for a party! Well, you have been invited! God wants you to come. People who ignore God will not go to heaven. Don't ignore God. Say "yes" to his invitation. Go to God's party in heaven! Prayer Thank you for inviting me to heaven, God. I want to go! Mission for the Week As a family, plan a special party. Let each person make their favorite foods and play their favorite music. Heaven will be even better!
“For by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread
and defend the faith by word and deed." CCC 1285 If you are a high school student and have received the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion but have yet to be confirmed, contact Doug Leikam for information, class registration and preparation for Confirmation: [email protected] or 913.957.6842

October 15, 2017 Marriage Minute
Did you have a good friend or family member skip your wedding for a trivial reason? If so, you understand the frustration of the father of the groom in this weekend’s Gospel. Not only do some guests skip the feast, but some even got violent with his messengers! This is incredibly disrespectful considering the quality of the invite. God has carefully prepared a feast of great joy for us in our marriages. Accepting this invitation means:
Priori zing our marriage over work
Cleaning ourselves up (through reconcilia on with spouse & God)
Dressing up (acts of kindness)
Whether we are talking about a wedding feast or our marriages, the extra effort to respond to the Father’s
invitation pays great dividends in lasting joy. See more at www.JoyfulMarriageProject.com

Everyday Stewardship Art Buchwald, the longtime humorist for the Washington Post who died in 2007 is credited with saying, "The best things in life aren't things." As Christians, we know this statement to be true. Certainly the best things in our lives are not those items that money can buy or things we can create in the material world. Faith, hope, and love are more precious than anything we can see with our eyes. Yet, as humans we often find ourselves longing for the very things that we claim are not nearly as valuable. We lose sight of what is real and true. Paul wrote in the fourth chapter of his Letter to the Philippians that he has experienced both living with abundance and then with very little. Regardless of what we have in terms of worldly goods, Paul reminds us that God provides for all our needs. God may not provide for our wants, but he does give us what we need.
The flesh seeks what it wants, but the spirit seeks what it needs. In a stewardship way of life, we must always remind ourselves that true wealth never comes from material possessions and mon-ey. True wealth comes from the love we share, the faith we devel-op, and the hope we bring to others. The best things in life aren't free, though. They require work, commitment, and fortitude. We need to cultivate these things daily. If we are serious about living life in this way, we will find that when our days on this earth are through, we really had it all.
