“Draw us in the Spirit’s tether, For when humbly, in Thy name, Two or three are met together, Thou art in the midst of them.”

So begins a well-known poem by The Rev. Percy Dearmer, an early 20th century Anglican priest and author. This image of being drawn in by the tether of the Spirit has stood out to me as I look toward the coming year at The Chapel of the Cross. In the last season we’ve all been stretched and pulled in many directions, but throughout that time I’ve felt the gentle tug of the Holy Spirit, drawing us closer to God, closer to one another, and binding us together as members of Christ’s body. To be drawn in the Spirit such that “all our meals and all our living make us sacraments of Thee, that by caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be.”—as Dearmer also wrote—seems a worthy goal to guide our life together this year.

In the following pages you will find many ways to be drawn in the Spirit to God and one another. Worship is foundational to our life, and starting September 12 we will begin, on a trial basis, the following Sunday services: 7:45 a.m, 9 a.m. (in-person and livestreamed); 11:15 a.m. and 4 p.m., contingent upon sufficient liturgical volunteer support. Additionally, we have several special worship events that you will see highlighted throughout the fall.

We will host in-person adult formation sessions at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings, and many of those offerings will also be available via livestream on our YouTube channel. We also have numerous small groups meeting for prayer, study and conversation. You will find a list of those offerings and whom to contact with your interest in the back of this brochure. Our Children’s, Youth, and University ministries with much care and creative planning, seek to retain their hallmarks of valuable spiritual formation and strong relationships built among participants.

As we start a new program year and begin the slow process of safely re-membering our community, we want to hear from you. We long to listen to one another. Where has God been at work in your life during these days of distance? What have you missed? What dreams do you think God has for us as a community bound together by the Holy Spirit? Be on the lookout for more information about a series of listening sessions that will be happening in a variety of formats. We are excited to hear what is on your heart and trust that in listening deeply to one another, God’s vision for The Chapel of the Cross will come more sharply into focus, and that we will be drawn by the Spirit to live boldly into that vision. Make a point to register so we can hear from you. Your voice is a vital strand in the Spirit’s tether.

Faithfully,

The Rev. Elizabeth Marie Melchionna

To open our formation offerings in our year of being “Drawn in the Spirit” we have a series exploring the role of The Spirit in both the Old and New Testaments. Led by our clergy, we’ll examine the Spirit’s work in the act of creation, its identification with Wisdom, as well as the various forms it takes in the Gospels before examining St. Paul’s understanding of the role The Spirit plays in the forming and sustaining communities. Today, The Rev. Noah Van Niel begins the series. You are welcome to join us in person and the class will also be livestreamed through our website and archived for later viewing.
