The Lord bless you and keep you;25

the Lord

make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you;26

the Lord lift up his countenance

Psalm 8

1 O Lord our Governor, *how exalted is your Name in all the world!

Recessional Hymn - The first Nowell

Hymnal #109 - The First Nowell

16

4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, *the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,

5 What is man that you should be mindful of him? *the son of man that you should seek him out?

6 You have made him but little lower than the angels; *you adorn him with glory and honor;

7 You give him mastery over the works of your hands; *you put all things under his feet:

8 All sheep and oxen, *even the wild beasts of the field,

9 The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, *and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.

10 O Lord our Governor, *how exalted is your Name in all the world!

Gloria Patri

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning,is now, and will be forever.

Second Reading

A reading from The Letter of Paul to the Philippians (2:5-11).5Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

6who, though he was in the form

of God,

did not regard equality with God

as something to be exploited,7but emptied himself,

taking the form of a slave,

being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,

8he humbled himself

and became obedient to the point of death—

5

even death on a cross.9Therefore God also highly exalted him

and gave him the name

that is above every name,10

so that at the name of Jesus

every knee should bend,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,11

and every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

People andCelebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, aswe forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver usfrom evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Then the Celebrant continuesHoly and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we hadfallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, toreconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, aperfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,

“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, andsaid,

“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and formany for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance ofme.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and PeopleChrist has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise andthanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we mayfaithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and atthe last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the

In fulfillment of histrue promise, the Holy Spirit came down from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teachthem and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession ofone faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and topreach the Gospel to all nations. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angelsand Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn toproclaim the glory of your Name:

Gospel

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (2:15-21).People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.15

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,

“Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has

made known to us.”16

So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child

lying in the manger.17

When they saw this, they made known what had been told them

about this child;18

and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.19

But

Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.20

The shepherds returned,

glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.21

After

eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name

given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Homily - The Reverend Paul L. Hicks

The people stand as they are able.

The Nicene Creed

All say togetherWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternallybegotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and forour salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he becameincarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified underPontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again inaccordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand ofthe Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdomwill have no end.

9

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father andthe Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken throughthe Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge onebaptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life ofthe world to come. Amen.

The people kneel as they are able.
